MATS Mantra Competition

This piece was a competition piece for MATS (make art that sells) mantra.  The goal was to encompass the feeling you get when you're taking a MATS course.  And, although I didn't win the big prize, I was able to use Illustrator in a new way for me.

See, I've been trying to nail down my style, and I absolutely love working digitally, but it lacks the grittiness and texture of my hand-illustrated and painted work.  So I've been trying to merge the two elements somehow (flat color + texture).

Here is what I came up with:

And this is how I got there:

I started out with pencil and ink sketches.  I had about 30 different thumbnails, and picked the heart-sun one because it was the most visually engaging.

I refined the image, traced it into Illustrator, and using a light-table I used overlays to play around with text.

Here is the image before I added text, texture, gradients, etc.

I almost stopped there... but it needed texture!!  You can see the hand-written text below.  I had several versions of each snippet of text.  Lots of versions of everything!

And finally, I went in and "texturized" the background.  It was a weird feeling to paint the background with texture and grit, but I think it works for this piece.  And, even though I didn't win the big prize, I did win a free entry into MATS Global Talent Search!  Woot!!

Our Spring/Summer 2015 Collection is HERE!

The last few weeks have been a flurry of activity as we prepared to release our new yarns and patterns for the Spring/Summer season.

I know that I am always enthusiastic about the pattern designs that we release, but this collection is actually something extra special. Designer Pam Wynne has created a knitwear collection that pretty much defines the Juniper Moon Farm aesthetic.  And, because Pam is a passionate knitter (like you) the patterns are well-crafted and fun to knit.

I’m going to introduce you to one collection per day, because there is so much here and I want each pattern to get it’s due.

All of these garments are designed using Juniper Moon Farm yarns. (You can find our yarns at your local yarn shop or by using our store locator.) The patterns are available as printed patterns in the same shops and as downloadable PDFs on Ravlery.

First up, The Downtown Collection, knit in Sabine.

Coming Soon: Splinters of Light

Splinters of Light coverI need to tell you about my friend Rachael Herron’s new book, Splinters of Light. (And yes, full disclosure, I do consider her a friend, even though I’ve only met her in person once.)

Anyway–I’m digressing.

She’s got a new book coming out, Splinters of Light, and in an effort to promote it, she’s offering all kinds of incentive for pre-ordering it. I haven’t read this specific book yet, but I’ve been reading her books since her first (How to Knit a Love Song) came out in 2010 and her writing keeps getting better and better. Her most recent, Pack Up The Moon was one I loved.

Anyway, Splinters of Light. Here’s the blurb from Amazon.com:

Ten years ago, Nora Glass started writing essays about being a single mother of a six-year-old daughter. Her weekly column made her a household name, and over the years, her fans have watched Ellie grow from a toddler to a teenager.

But now Nora is facing a problem that can’t be overcome. Diagnosed with a devastating disease that will eventually take away who she is, she is scared for herself, but even more frightened about what this will mean for her sixteen-year-old daughter.

Now Nora has no choice but to let go of her hard-won image as a competent, self-assured woman, and turn to the one person who has always relied on her: her twin sister, Mariana. Nora and Mariana couldn’t be more different from one another, and they’ve always had a complicated relationship. But now the two sisters will have to summon the strength to help them all get through a future none of them could have ever imagined, while uncovering the joy and beauty that was always underneath.

So … go pre-order this. And then go tell Rachael you did so to get entered to win one of her prizes. (You get a bonus offer if you get it from her local bookstore, Diesel Books, in Oakland CA–a special touch on a book promotion that I love, even if it’s 3000 miles away from my house.)

I know I can’t wait to read this one.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Scale …

This week’s photo challenge is ‘scale’.  I took this photo one foggy morning on Martha’s Vineyard while waiting in line to board the ferry.  The little rowboat in the harbor seems even smaller next to the bigger boat.

The Vineyard, Feb 1989 …

February 1989 was the first time back to the Vineyard in winter since I was a child.  Following are excerpts from my travel log about that trip and also pictures taken with a non-digital camera… which does have relevance in this post.    So come join me in a trip down a cold, snowy very wintery memory lane.

One of my favorite places is the Campground in Oak Bluffs.  I love the gingerbread cottages but most of all I really really love the Tabernacle… every time I’m on the Vineyard I take a few moments…or hour… and sit quietly there and enjoy just being.  Winter was no exception, cold as it was it was warm in my heart.

100_7831Let’s wander through Oak Bluffs a little …  notice Christmas tree is still in the Bandstand …

My creationwent out to South Beach where there were lots of Christmas trees people had brought after the holidays…    also drove out to Menemsha just to take a look around…

My creationand then to Gay Head …

excerpt from travel journal :  ‘it was cold on the cliffs. 26 degrees maybe…but off I went to see them anyway.  Down the road I traipsed over the dunes and onto the beach… what a sight.  Thousands of rocks all shapes and sizes, and there in the distance… the cliffs… I was very excited.  Took some shots and scurried back to the warm car.  Noticed camera had opened a bit, closed it and didn’t think much about it.  After lunch in Edgartown I rode out the ‘bend in the road beach’ to take some pictures and noticed that the picture counter on the camera said #1 !!!!  When I had gotten in the car in the morning it had said #16 !!!  Something was wrong.   I turned around and headed for the camera shop.  Everything seems to be okay with the camera but maybe it got too cold and lost its memory and reverted to #1… or perhaps when the camera opened just that little bit it caused it to revert !!  At any rate I’m having what was in the camera developed.’

The following day I picked up my photos and not only were they all fine, there was this one…. actually, these two…

around and about Edgartown …

There was eating and relaxing but I also had a shopping mission !  My daughter Patty and her husband Mike were expecting their first baby and I, as soon to be grammy was determined to find an MV shirt for baby.  I had already promised myself, and future grandchild that I would keep her/him in Vineyard t-shirts forever :)  (They found out the following month that the baby was a little girl).

Not too many shops open that carried baby things… not too many souvenir shirts available either. Here it was only 3 months before baby would arrive and this was my only chance to bring back a shirt from the Vineyard.    On an off chance I walked into a store in Edgartown, I don’t even remember what they sold but tucked way off in a corner were… little people t-shirts.  I wondered just how little those sizes would be.

I hit pay dirt… there was one baby t-shirt and I grabbed it.  Ah, success and also the start of a still ongoing tradition.

Granddaughter Tiffany was the first to wear the shirt.. after her came grandson Tyler… when he outgrew it my daughter asked what she should do with it and I said I’d take it.   Here it is today being modeled by my doll Molly.

My creationThere certainly wasn’t as much snow that February as the Vineyard has gotten this year but I got to enjoy a powdery dusting of it.

Cold Weather Reading

btt button

When the weather is cold and blustery, would you rather read something is equally wintery? Or something to take you as far away from the snow as possible?

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

And also–don’t forget, folks–sometimes WordPress’s spam filter seems to decide that a lot of perfectly valid answers are spam. I periodically check throughout the day for lost comments. But, PLEASE–if your comment doesn’t show, don’t post it four more times in the hopes that one of them will go through. I get very, very tired trying to sort out the duplicates (grin).

Fairisle February!

Can't believe it's already started, and it's already February.  Yesterday I taught Day 1 of my fairisle course.  I taught (in German!) the the fundamentals of fairisle knitting.  I was so excited!  They got the basics yesterday:

-how to hold the yarn when knitting two colors
-planning colors
-working with colorwork charts

Our table was so messy by the time class was done.  Sadly, I somehow deleted the images from my phone!  GRR!  Oh well.  In the meantime, here's my little guy modeling the sample sweater-vest I made for the course...

Next week I'll back up any photos I take directly.  Speaking of which, next week we'll be facing fears and cutting steeks!
