My MV calendar picture for June 2026 is of the fishing village of Menemsha.
Menemsha is a working fishing village located within the town of Chilmark on the western side of Martha’s Vineyard. The sculpture commemorates the sizeable fleet of swordfishermen who at one time called Menemsha home. The beach at Menemsha is small and quiet with calm waters, great for families. Menemsha is also the perfect spot to catch the sunset.
My MV calendar picture for February 2026 is a painting my dear friend Karen made for me. She and I have known each other almost 20 years yet have never met in person. The love of Martha’s Vineyard is what brought us together in the first place via our blogs and we began referring to ourselves as ‘Vineyard soul sisters’ and who had Gingerbread cottages next to each other in Oak Bluffs. Thus the painting which arrived on my doorstep several months ago.
Oak Bluffs and the Campground in particular are near and dear to my heart. I spent my childhood summers with my parents and relatives in Oak Bluffs and so many memories of my fond memories are of the Campground and the Gingerbread cottages.
For the pick a word theme challenge I’m choosing… nautical. My choices for nautical are all of the beloved Martha’s Vineyard ferry… the Islander.
The Islander was retired in the winter of 2007 and the last time I sailed on her was that February. Even though not sleek or graceful, for 57 years the Islander brought her own special beauty to the waters surrounding the Vineyard. The Islander will continue to exist through paintings, photographs and in the memories of those who loved her.
Early morning…
The beloved work horse of a ferry, the Islander plied the waters between Woods Hole and Martha’s Vineyard for 57 years before retiring in the winter of 2007. There was just something about this tub of a boat that endeared her to all who sailed on her… she wasn’t a great beauty but she had a regalness about her.
Her blue plastic outdoor seats certainly weren’t known for their comfort, but comfort wasn’t necessarily what one was after for the 45 minute sail from America to the Vineyard, which was more of a transition from the everyday to the magicalness awaiting you. The Vineyard is many things to many people and in many hearts the Islander was the emotional connection. Fond memories
Several years ago I took a trip to Plymouth, MA to visit the Plimouth Plantation, the Mayflower II and the John & Priscilla Alden home in Duxbury, MA. Here are some of my pictures of textures from that trip including the delicious texture of a lobster roll
