Mariner’s Compass

IMG_9000

Just before I dropped my sewing machine off for service, I finished up the Mariner’s Compass pillow. I think it would benefit from a little more background around the outside so next time I’ll plan for that. All in all it was a fantastic learning experience.

Quilt: done

You have to imagine that in Gordon Ramsey’s voice. The little gift quilt is all finished.

Moving right along

I realized with my new smaller footprint desk, I have room to pin smallish quilts on the floor again. To be honest, I like pinning with clamps and the Rubbermaid table much better. I’m planning to quilt this along the zig zag lines in the ditch.

Block keepers

A week or two ago, Kate kindly pointed me in the direction of a mini design board tutorial. If you’ve ever been to my house, you know I don’t have any bare walls remotely large enough for a design wall of any size so I was quite excited about this tutorial. I was thinking about going to Farmer’s Wife class with 6 or 7 blocks cut out and realized that the version with foam core would not work for me so I built my block keepers with 12 x 12 scrapbook paper and a thick fabric with nap (flannel would work beautifully, I think I used PVU). I’d been having trouble with my previous system (just scrap batting stuffed in a notebook) and these worked a treat. If you want to be extra cautious, try binder clips around the outside during transit. Thanks for the tip Kate!

Farmer’s Wife blocks are waiting patiently while I knock out another deadline project. This quilt is based on the tutorial given here but I’ve gone with a full assortment of colors rather than alternating with a solid which gives zig zag every row. It works up very quickly and I”ll soon be ready to pin after a bit of trimming up.

Picking up speed

I’m slowly learning ways to streamline the Farmer’s Wife block making process. I select fabric for several blocks and iron it in layers in a big stack on the ironing board (iron one at a time as you add it to the stack). I also mark my templates so that they share a cutting line which makes cutting go faster. Speaking of cutting, I got these new little Fiskars after seeing a fancy precision cutting demo at the quilt show but they are so tight they made a bruise on my finger. I loosened the screw just a tiny bit and now they feel much better.
