Weekly Photo Challenge: Wall …

Weekly prompt:  From the interior walls of our home, to our book club’s Facebook wall, to the community bulletin board at the local market, walls are the canvases of our lives: where stories are read, voices are heard, ideas are shared. Much can be revealed from the items on a wall, from old postcards to long-forgotten flyers.

This week, consider the walls you’ve erected and decorated, the halls you walk down each day, or the exteriors you’ve ignored or neglected. What do these walls reveal about a place, people, or you?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I haven’t decorated, erected or painted any of these walls but each one has intrigued me enough to take a picture.
Vineyard Connection …
…. or, how MV came to be in our lives.
(my mother — my grandmother)
This post is about my mother and my grandmother, the two women who are responsible for our connection to the Vineyard.
My grandmother, Albra Mae Flewellyn Littlefield Grant Baird, was born in Maine.  She was widowed twice, her third husband, Arthur Baird Sr was an Islander who was left to raise two sons, Floyd and Arthur Jr, and a daughter, Hattie, after his first wife died.  My grandmother and my mother Maude came to live on Martha’s Vineyard in Oak Bluffs  and thus began our connection and love of the Vineyard.
I don’t know a lot about my grandmother’s life after moving to the Vineyard except that she was busy raising four rambunctuous children, keeping house for her husband and being active in community projects with her friends.  She died before my parents were married so I never knew her but I  feel a closeness to her whenever I’m on the Vineyard.  She is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs.
My mother, Maude Louise Littlefield Freeman was born in Waterville, Maine on March 11, 1907.
The next to the last Mother’s Day I spent with my mom was May 1975. My parents were vacationing on the Cape and she was unaware that we were driving up to surprise her for the weekend. I gave her the book ‘Mostly On Martha’s Vineyard, A Personal Record’ by Henry Beetle Hough, as I knew she’d know some of the people mentioned in the book. I am so glad I did that because after reading the book she decided she wanted to sail over to the Vineyard to visit her mother’s grave. It turned out be her last trip to her beloved Vineyard.
Stone Faces …
100_5846
Collecting rocks and stones is something you can’t avoid doing as you walk along a Vineyard beach. I admit I didn’t find the one with this poem:
“Weathered posts and sea grass, waves rushing in to kiss the shore; I closed my eyes and peace descends, I’m at The Vineyard once more.”
I didn’t find the stones below on he beach either.
These beautiful stone sculptures were done by a Native American from Aquinnah. I asked him how he knows what to sculpt and he told me that he has to get to know the stone first… let it speak to him and tell him what it is meant to be…  only then does he begin the process of letting the spirit emerge from the stone.
This particular stone is double-ended.
100_5860
The face of a Native American.
100_5861
The spirit of an eagle.
100_5862
I particularly like this one below. I like the way the face looks peaceful and wise.
100_5865
Something I find interesting about these sculptures is that when you’re holding them they’re both cool and warm. Perhaps it’s the spirit from within.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Symmetry …
Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs on the island of Martha’s Vineyard is a perfect example of symmetry to me.
