On Wednesday, October 5th MV Obsession will be 9 years old. NINE. Nine years of obsession about the place that I love most in the world, that’s a lot of obsessing. Today’s post will be number 982 and it all began with these words…
Hi, my name is Joan and I’m a Vineyard-a-holic… ‘
Followed by…
My obsession/love affair with Martha’s Vineyard started early in my life. I was around 2 and a half in this picture and this was already my second trip.
My connection to MV was through my mother who although was born in Maine was raised on MV. She went to Oak Bluffs high school (there was no regional high school, each town had its own back then) and after graduating moved to NJ where she met my father and quickly converted him into an MV fan.
We stayed with my godparents in Oak Bluffs every summer. Life on MV was so different from Newark, NJ where I spent the other part of my existence. My mother and I would take the train from NY to Woods Hole in June, my dad would arrive for the entire month of August and we’d all sadly leave the beginning of September.
My summers were filled with trips to the beach in Oak Bluffs… endless rides on the Flying Horses… ice cream at the Frosty Cottage on Circuit Ave… popcorn at Darling’s… fairs and parades… at least one trip to Gay Head (Aquinnah)… visiting relatives in Indian Hill… movies… setting pins at the bowling alley in Oak Bluffs… endless hours at the Oak Bluffs library… Bible school at the Tabernacle… Illumination Night… and one especially painful memory of my first and only dance lesson at the Tivoli ballroom where the Oak Bluffs police department now stands.
These are just a few snippets of memories and stories I’d like to share. Hope whoever reads them finds them as enjoyable as I did experiencing them.’
MV Obsession isn’t strictly about the Vineyard anymore but like the header says it’s ‘almost all the time.’
Feel free to wander through the category links along the right side, visitors are always welcome
Happy 9th blogiversary MV Obsession

The Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey

This place is A-MAZ-ING, I’ve never seen anything like it. GFS is a sculpture park and museum founded by John Seward Johnson in 1992. I heard about GFS a few years ago but had no idea how really unique and quieting to the mind and spirit GFS is.

The sculptures were fantastic …
and thought provoking like the one below… which one is the real one?
But it was the tableaux, often hidden away in secluded settings that I enjoyed the most..even though in some cases I felt like I was intruding.

In others it was more like walking through a different century.
And in others still… mind games of sorts.
‘Forest of The Subconscious’ (I’m pretty sure MY subconscious doesn’t look like that, but who knows.)

‘Chamber Of Internal Dialogue’

I really enjoyed my visit to Grounds For Sculpture, I felt very content there, I hope someday to go back and see more of it. It’s not possible to see it all in one trip, each winding path, or secluded glade leads you off in another direction.

The prompt is: This week, share your own interpretation of “edge.” Take a photo from an actual edge, like a balcony, a window, or a seaside bluff.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My choice for ‘Edge’ are pictures I took on Martha’s Vineyard at the Gay Head Lighthouse in the town of Aquinnah. Let me first say that I am afraid of heights but going inside this beautiful lighthouse was something I had always wanted to do so when the opportunity arose I mustered the courage and climbed to the top.
This teeny Vineyard book is 1 inch square. Untie the ribbon and it opens like an accordion.
There is a verse on one side…
“The landscape of Martha’s Vineyard invites us daily to pause, to breathe and give our awareness to the splendor of our surroundings. The soul of the land and the sea speaks in a silent language to our own souls, calling forth a feeling of connectedness and well-being, belonging and responsiveness. We come to our senses and discover ourselves again in the grace, elegance and natural beauty of the island… Even if your visit here is brief , the Vineyard welcomes you home.” -I.G.M.
And pictures on the other.
I’ve added in some of my own that sort of resemble the ones in the book. I didn’t have any pictures of grazing cows so I substituted a goat friend of mine.
I’m glad I rediscovered this teeny book today. Thank you to the special person who gave it to me.<3
