Weekly Challenge: Dance …
In this week’s challenge, share a photo of something that appears like dance to you — whether you choose to focus on objects, animals, or people (actually dancing, or not), try to capture the rhythm in their movement.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My choice for ‘dance’ are these scuptures at the Field Gallery in W Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard. You cannot but dance with these whimsical statues that dot the field behind the gallery. They make me smile every time I go there :)
Surtex Prep!
Here at the studio, I'm in full-out Surtex prep mode! Yes, it's only March, and Surtex is in May, but I hate leaving things to the last minute. I tend to avoid last-minute frenzies and prefer instead to work at a steady pace...
So that's where I've been... in Surtex preparation! (Ahem... getting ahead of myself, eh?) Ah yes, I should explain.
What is Surtex? It's a tradeshow for licensing illustration and artwork.
What do I mean by licensing? That's when you rent your work out to different industries that need visuals for their products. And, that's my aim along with meeting art directors interested in collaborating with me and asking me to illustrate people or flora and fauna for them!
My top three areas of focus are...
1) Surface design for apparel / home decor / gifts
2) Illustrations for children's literature
3) And greeting cards and stationery
I'm getting so excited! I just sent my files to be printed as fabric swatches and I cannot wait to SEW with my own designs!! I made my first prototype for what I'll be wearing during Surtex today, and I might very well be bubbling over with excitement! (bubble bubble bubble)
Oh, are you going to be at Surtex too? Let me know! I'll be exhibiting as part of my art collective, Finch & Foxglove at Booth #543!
Phantom Of The Opera …
Broadway’s longest running musical opened in 1988 and is still going strong.
I’ve seen it 3 times and would see it again and again.
This poster is on the front of the theatre and if you look closely can see it’s made up of all tiny photos.
Closer look …
Have you seen Phantom ?
NYC Matinee Day …
My daughter Deb, our friend Dawn and I went to NYC last Saturday to see…tah dah… the funniest, most hysterical musical comedy I think I’ve ever seen… and despite the title… it was not rotten :) Come along and join us on our matinee day in the city.
After getting coffee we headed to Times Square…
You can always count on seeing a lot of characters roaming Times Sq, for example take a look at the characters in the last picture, crazy looking bunch :)
You might even see a proposal taking place, although I wonder if the one we saw was a real one or staged since there was a camera crew there ! At any rate it picture worthy.
Next up was lunch.. Junior’s Restaurant & Bar was our choice and it was a good one… we all chose sandwiches which were huge and delicious, the side dishes of pickles and also beets were great…but the icing on the cake, or in this case the blueberries on the cheesecake was oh so good… one piece shared 3 ways was perfect.
and now the main event… I present …’Something Rotten’..
Inside before the magic, and the laughter began…
And of course way too soon the laughter, the music, and the magic ended and it was out into the cold evening with memories of a fantastic, not rotten, matinee day in the city :)
Hello 2016!
Whoah! Where did 2015 go? It just flew by I tell you!
I can't believe it was already a year ago I was sitting at my studio in Munich getting ready to get my illustration career back on track, and here I am now in California ready to launch the sales portion of my career!
In 2016, I hope to make some sales of my artwork as greeting cards and prints, as licenses on products and fabric! Lots of work to do! I'll keep you posted... and don't forget, you can always see my most recent work on instagram here.
Our Christmas Santa …
My dad was a police officer in Newark, NJ. For many of his years on the force he worked in the Emergency Squad division. During the long hours between calls the guys would keep themselves busy in various ways like cooking. Near the Christmas holidays they always came up with a special project, like candle making for instance.
In 1956 they made Santas. I still have ours. Santa stands about 3 and 1/2 feet tall and is made from press board. After the outline was drawn the guys cut out the Santas and my dad set to work drawing the features, clothing and bag of toys. At that point our Santa came home and my mother and I painted him. I’m not sure how many coats of paint we used but Santa was spread out on our kitchen table for about a week before he was completely dry. I don’t know what kind of paint we used either but here it is 59 years later and he’s not chipped or faded. This was the only time I ever remember the three of us doing a family project together.
I love everything about this Santa, even the buttons being on the wrong side… but the thing I love the most is that he looks like my dad… a self portrait so to speak.
Below is my daughter Patty age 2 and 1/2 in 1966…
… and her daughter (my granddaughter) Tiffany age 2 and 1/2 in 1991
Here’s to Christmas memories <3
