Mariner’s Compass

IMG_8426 IMG_8424 IMG_8418

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon finishing up my mariner’s compass. I wanted to get that done while it was still fresh in my mind and I’m glad I did since a few of her tips were not in the book. One thing she mentioned was to have your sewing lines cross as you come off the edge of those red and blue points. Another tip was to assemble the compass into halves because if you just keep adding wedges you’ll end up with that last wedge you can’t get in. She says to leave the paper in until you’ve appliqued the compass onto the background fabric to prevent all those bias edges from stretching and becoming misshapen. This will probably sit for awhile now because I’m not sure what I want to do with it.

Pieced

I finished up the perfect piecing project very quickly once the sewing room was put back together and tidied up. I’m probably going to turn it into a pillow and gift it.

Feathers

We were also signed up for a class on a feather quilted table runner. We got really worried about that one after hearing the first class didn’t quilt feathers at all. We chatted with the ladies at the help desk who made a few phone calls and eventually the person in charge of classes said she’d talk to the instructor, Lori Allison, about making sure to get to the feathers during class. When we got to class we learned that it was her first time teaching the class in a 3 hour format. She had 22 students the first day and our class had 10 students, a much more reasonable number. Every student had her own sewing machine to work with but there were only 6 ironing boards so it’s easy to see how 22 students were way to many for the class as originally designed. We all let her know that we preferred to practice feathers in class and assemble our table runners at home. I think the next time she teaches this class it will be ace! She was a bit disorganized but she sure knew her stuff about feathers and had some excellent tips. She recommended drawing them out in entirety when learning to quilt them but suggested just drawing out the spine later on. She showed us how to draw in a teardrop and add a dashed line at a Y-junction to help create some boundaries and many other tips. In the end, we were quite happy with that class and we learned a lot. My first feathers are a bit wobbly but I’m betting they’ll be much easier to sew at home on my own machine when I am ready to complete my runner. Lori definitely took the fear of feathers out of quilting for me.

Mariner’s Compass

IMG_8235 IMG_8236 IMG_8385

The first class we took was the Mariner’s Compass class with Chris Lynn Kirsch. As part of the class we got her new book so we didn’t even have to take notes. We used a large embroidery hoop to draw our circles. We cut those out and used a folding method to draft our templates. During class we learned how to adjust for little imperfections that happen in the folding and drawing of the templates and we sewed 1/8 of our compass. Classes at Expo are limited to 3 hours and Chris did a fantastic job of truncating a 6-hour class to fit the 3-hour format. I can’t wait to finish up my first compass!

Quilt Expo 2012

Day one of the Quilt Expo started off with an enormous line of folks waiting to get in. Rather than just stand about, we checked out the quilts in a little hallway and by the time we were done the line was gone. We were packed in like sardines but we managed to make several purchases and attend a couple very interesting lectures.

Visit with Madame Purl

When visiting Madame Purl, we invariably stop at the Fold on the way home from the airport. This trip I chose a pound of this wonderfully soft Polworth (%20 off!). Now that we’ve both gotten into quilting, quilt shops have been added to the itinerary. At Material Girl I found some crabby laminate I could not pass up. This is destined to become a lunch bag for Jason at some point. At Acorn quilts, I couldn’t pass up this fun blue and yellow stack of fat quarters. And of course there’s always a fabulous kitty welcoming committee.
