I’ve been plugging along at the Farmer’s Wife blocks as time permits. Sadly, this week I learned that the local quilt shop where I take Farmer’s Wife class is closing at the end of the year. Suddenly, these blocks are a higher priority as I really don’t want to switch instructors mid-stream.  I am about 1/3 of the way through them and will try to get as many done as I can while Cathy is still available to help out when I get stuck.

I took my quilt to the shop where they helped me choose a binding fabric. In the outer border I quilted long squiggles that look a bit like seagrass to me. A run through the washer and dryer improved things a good bit and I was relieved there wasn’t any color bleed from the hand-dyed fabrics. It’s off in the mail now where I hope it will arrive before birthday celebrations ensue.

Free motion adventures

The quilting I had in mind for Baby Honu is quite a stretch for my current level of ability. At the quilt show I bought the queen size Supreme Slider which is supposed to help with free motion quilting and this was my first opportunity to break that out. The pebble quilting in the turtle shells went fairly well on my test piece but it was a whole ‘nother kettle of fish on the actual quilt. I did improve and found that starting my pebble in the center of the space to be filled worked best for me. I had planned to do a little echo quilting around the outside of the turtles but I was having some serious tension issues or something as my bobbin thread kept snagging. I left it at a single echo line around each turtle. This quilt has a little surprise when you turn the lights out. When I saw this glow in the dark thread at the show I just had to get some.

Waves

There are “wave” blocks to go along with the turtle blocks in the quilt I”m working on. I’ve quilting these “waves” before when I made a snail’s trail quilt and I made the same initial mistakes as last time. I think, in future, I need to write the color names on the foundation paper. I can’t remember what method I used for the snail’s trail quilt but the centers came out nicer so I need to keep that in mind should I use this block pattern again. The wave blocks are slower going so they’ll take a little while to work through before I can piece the top of the quilt.
