This post is #200!  Can you believe it?  I started blogging back in February of 2009.  Time flies!  You've seen me progress from aspiring designer and illustrator, to actually doing it.  Thanks for reading along.

So, in honor of a bit of blogosphere longevity, I'm giving away a sewing pattern, and creating a special coupon code for any knitting fans which will be valid for the rest of the week!

As for the giveaway,  I'm giving away the pattern for the Edie, 1967 Coat (Vogue 7239).  The pattern is for Size 14, Bust 36, and is for a dress version or a coat.

If you'd like to enter, just leave a comment below, and please include a valid e-mail address so I can contact you and mail you the pattern.  Giveaway entries will be accepted until the end of the week, as long as your comment gives you a time-stamp on or before Sunday, December 2, 2012.

As for the knitting pattern sale, all the patterns from my Ravelry shop are 20% off with the coupon code: BLOGLOVE1 also until December 2, 2012.  Enjoy!

You can check out the eligible patterns via this link.

Thanks for reading along!

ETA: Winners were announced!  Floralwhirl & Ruth's names were picked out together.  Floralwhirl took the pattern since hers was on top, and Ruth won a consolation prize fat quarter from my stash.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you so much for all the great comments and happy soaping everybody -- especially to those of you who are just getting started! (How exciting!)

And remember, if you make any purchases at Bramble Berry this month, enter that GIVEMBER50 code and you'll be entered to win a $50 Bramble Berry gift certificate!

Soap! And a Bramble Berry "Givember" Giveaway!

Sunny Day Soap

This is an exciting post for me for several reasons. First up, I made some lovely soap. (Yay!) Secondly, I get to take part in a special promotion from my favorite source for almost all of my soap making needs, Bramble Berry®, Inc. Thirdly, giveaway time!!! But first we need to talk soap.

I'm so happy to be participating in Bramble Berry's Givember promotion. For me, this meant an opportunity to try out and talk about a product of my choosing -- and rumor has it, I like to talk... For you this means a special code to use with any purchase you make at Bramble Berry during the month of November (GIVEMBER50). Just plug that puppy in at checkout and you'll be entered to win a Bramble Berry gift certificate worth $50.00!

But I know you're dying to know what I chose, yeah? I picked a product I thought not only looked like something I'd love to make, but also something that would speak to those of you who might still be teetering on the edge of deciding to make your own cold process soap from scratch. (Like really, if these kinds of things had been widely available a few years back, I would probably have started making my own soap a LOT sooner than I did.)

Sunny Day Soap

So without further ado, allow me to introduce to you the Sunshine Soap Kit. I used my own base oils, lye, and a natural colorant (turmeric), but I was graciously provided with a HUGE bag of fragrant dried Calendula petals and 2 oz bottles of both the 10x Orange Essential Oil and the Yuzu Cybilla Fragrance Oil. If you have not yet tried the 10x Orange (as I hadn't), TRY IT. It held up beautifully in this soap and is an intense, true orange like you have never smelled in CP soap. Really. And this was also my first experience with a Yuzu fragrance and I must say, I am hooked. It is sweet and tangy and juicy and just so vibrant and pleasing to smell. I am so taken with both scents as individuals and together they are a perfect pair.

sneak peek with an end cut off

Now, my batch looks considerably more *ahem* rustic than the one in Anne Marie's tutorial due to my lack of a vertical mold, but I'm okay with that if you are. (In lieu of being able to pour side by side, I simply brought both halves to thicker traces and layered them one on top of another in my usual mold.)

Now, I do realize that this kit is not recommended for beginners due to the techniques involved, but never fear! There is a great kit just for beginners that might just be what you've been waiting for to start in on your very own handmade cold process soap! This is exactly the product I wish I could have had a few years back when I felt I was really ready to try my hand at real soap making but had no idea where to buy supplies (or when I found some, they were in amounts too ridiculously huge for just a test run, you know?) I mean, if you were just thinking about learning to knit, you probably wouldn't buy a blanket's worth of yarn right off the bat, right? So why should soap making be any different? Bramble Berry's beginner CP kit is perfect; all the important stuff in reasonable amounts at a great price, so if you have the desire, you should totally take the plunge! I can almost* promise you will not regret it.

*Unless you're kind of crabby or somebody who doesn't like learning amazing new things or somebody who just generally likes being difficult. Then I guarantee nothing. (I tease, I tease.)

Oslo Star Hat Pattern

Help Us = Win Yarn

It’s very rare that words elude me but I have to say, I am stumped. I am trying to come up with the right word for an important project and it’s driving me bananas! Last night I dreamed about flipping through the pages of the dictionary, y’all.

I need a word (or short phrase) that describes the current movement towards gardening, cooking, DIY, crafting, etc. I am rejecting “homesteading” and “urban homesteading” both because the word “homestead” is inherently racist and because I don’t think it really describes the majority of my readers and customers. (Too 70s. Too granola.)

“Self-sufficent” is neither catchy nor true- even those of us with giant gardens can’t come close to claiming self-sufficiency. “DIYers” seems too closely tied to home improvement to serve the purpose. I’ve always thought “crafters” was slightly deeming and it only covers a fraction of what I’m trying to describe.

So what do you call the well-read, thoughtful people who are making deliberate decisions to grow their own food, sew their own clothes, maybe keep a couple of hens or beehives while maintaining a serious profession and living in the city or suburbs? There needs to be a word for these people and I can’t find it.

EDITED TO ADD: Keep in mind that it will work best if the word can be used as a noun, a la homesteaders, crafters, intentionalists (clearly I made that one up.)

So I’m turning to you, my well-read, thoughtful readers, for help. And I’m prepared to pay for the perfect word, in the currency that knitters and crocheters like best- yarn, and lots of it. $300 worth, to be exact.

Here’s how it works:

Leave your suggestion in the comments section of this post. One entry per person and only one suggestion per comment. (In other words, you can’t just throw up a bunch of half-assed suggestions.)  Entries with more than one suggestion will be disqualified, because it violates the rules and without rules, chaos. UPDATED TO ADD: I am dropping the “one suggestion per person” rule because we still aren’t quite there and I want y’all to keep thinking and coming up with ideas. So consider the floodgates OPENED.

The deadline for entering is 11:59 p.m. EST on Tuesday, May 22. Entries posted after that date and time will not be considered.

The winner will be chosen by me, with help from Caroline, Zac and Carrie. The first poster of the winning word or phrase will be declared the winner. The winner gives JMF permission to use their entry in any way we see fit.  The winner will receive an enormous amount of yarn and will probably roll around in it when it arrives at his/her house. Photos of said rolling would be appreciated but are not required.

Ready…set…GO!

Flock Giveaway Update

Just wanted to clarify that the voting in our Mighty Big Giveaway continues through tomorrow night (Saturday)  at 11:59 p.m.. Afterwards, I will announce the winner fairly quickly, I promise. I can imagine that the suspense is driving these lovely would-be shepherds to distraction. No more than a days, I promise.

As we get down to the wire, please remember that I have already determined that all four of these entrants are qualified to give a home to a flock of sheep. There’s nothing wrong with cheerleading for your candidate but doing it at the expense of others will not be tolerated.

One of the reasons I do this giveaway every year is to pass along the kindness hundreds of people showed me when I was learning to be a shepherd. Please don’t ruin that by being unkind to our entrants. In addition to making me sad, it’s completely unnecessary.
