Block of the Month

BOM August

Here’s my latest block of the month.

New Pajamas

I finally finished the pajamas I had planned on making for Emily for her birthday.  Better late than never!

The fabric is Tula Pink, and the pattern is from Favorite Things.

The pants are a steampunk-ish mechanical bird, and the top has very spooky apothecary jars.  Very Emily.

I even whipped up a sleep mask to match.

She’s ready for fall already!

Block of the Month: August

I’d Love to Sew: Wiksten Tank

Last week, I finally cracked and bought this pattern. I’ve been a blog-reader and serious admirer of Jenny’s since, gosh, 2008. She’s a talented designer (both sewing and knitting) and photographer, and also a lovely writer. It also doesn’t hurt that she’s a quarter Swedish, and that the name of her blog and online shop, Wiksten, is the surname of her Swedish grandmother.

After seeing so many beautiful versions of this top, it seemed like a perfect way to play around with different fabrics, a yard and a half at a time.

It also seems like a pattern I can make again and again, and (hopefully) become better at sewing in the meantime.

More Sister’s Choice blocks

Slowly but surely I am getting through these blocks. I have about fifteen more to go and then it’s time to think about final quilt top construction, sashing, borders and all that jazz.

I’d Love to Sew: A Circle Skirt

This is a good-looking skirt that I’m thinking of trying to make pretty soon, but it’d require a trip to Richmond to buy the fabric (which, well, not at all a downside).

Geneva’s blog is absolutely addictive and 100% inspiring.

Farmer’s Wife Blocks

Along with Block of the Month, Farmer’s Wife quilt class comes at the beginning of the month. So far I have been doing pretty well sewing these at home. I think Kathy felt bad that I seemed to be doing them all so easily but I knew as the pieces got smaller I’d start having trouble. The green and brown block went together easily but the blue and yellow one has been sewn and ripped out a few times already. I think I must be doing something that stretches those bias pieces because those keep coming out too large. Next month instead of FW class, Kathy’s going to do a precision piecing class and I suspect that will sort my problems out. Meanwhile, I’m planning to cut several blocks out and have them ready to go.

Put me in the Zoo!

This week I finally got around to finish up a bag I meant to sew for a friend months ago. This is my favorite grocery bag pattern that I’ve used over and over so it’s even got it’s own folder. I’ve tweaked the size a bit so it’ll fit on her kicksled in winter which can come in pretty handy in Vermont in a normal year. She’s also got a fabulous guest room on her back porch which is glassed in so these eye masks should come in handy. Eye masks are a great way to use up scrap fabric and batting!

And I’m Outta Here…..

This past week has been spent in a flurry of activity in preparation for Beach Week – I’ll be leaving for my annual book club retreat tomorrow and I’ll be there until Sunday.

Before leaving I had to get the house in decent shape (in hopes it won’t be too awful when I return), make sure I had plenty of easy – to – make food packed into the kitchen for the family, and finish up the hand – sewn garments I wanted to wear for the weekend.

Everything I’ve been working on lately has been Alabama Chanin – inspired.  This green dress won’t be for the beach weekend – it’s more of an early fall dress.

I will be wearing my stenciled and inked dress, however.  You’ll have to wait for pictures of it finished, though.

It’s been a solid week of work.  But, it’s been a labor of love.  And every pattern I have used out of their books have fit like a dream.

I’ll be back here Sunday evening with the beach report.  Until then!
