Cherry Blossoms In Branch Brook Park…

Newark, New Jersey

My creation

Branch Brook Park is located in my hometown of Newark, NJ.   Branch Brook Park was created in 1895 making it the first county park in the nation.  It has the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the world… more than Washington, DC and more than Japan.  The cherry trees were a gift donated in 1927 by Caroline Bamberger Fuld. BBP is 360 acres and has almost 5000 cherry trees.  The Cherry Blossom Festival runs for two weeks April 9 – 24, 2016. The Bloomfest is Sunday, April 24th… during which time the cherry blossoms should be at their peak

Some of the cherry trees are along Second River which forms the border between Newark and Belleville.

Weekly Challenge: Future …

 The prompt this week is to share our interpretation of future.

The gang plank of the Mayflower replica in Plymouth, MA.  This is definitely a step into the future…

These photographs were taken in October 2015 on a trip to Plymouth.  My descendants came to America on the first voyage of the Mayflower.  I could not imagine, even with my vivid imagination what their trip was like.  Hearty souls indeed.

A Typical(?) Day in the Life of a Knitting Pattern Designer

As I was writing the post title I realize how impossible it would be to describe a day and say that was representative of every day.  And certainly, even if I could come up with a typical day for me, it doesn’t mean it’s typical for any other designer!

Since I also work as a locum tenens (filling in at clinics as needed) small animal veterinarian, part time to full time, my work schedule changes from week to week. Often I work half days at a local feline practice, and I’m usually home before 2p; sometimes I work a vaccine clinic on Wednesday nights, which consumes the time between 5:20 and 8 or 8:30p; other times I’ll do full days, which can mean I’m gone from home from about 7 or 8a to 6:30 or 7p. I also often work Saturdays. Designing fits in before, after and around those times.

If I’m don’t have a vet job that day, I usually work at the computer in the mornings, and (ideally) knit in the afternoons and/or evening. The occasional photo shoot is in the afternoon as well.

DeathtoStock_CreativeSpace1 11.45.06 AMComputer time includes tech editing, website maintenance, social media, pattern layout, creating or editing charts, creating schematics, design planning, submissions, accounting, pattern support, self education (I really need to improve my Photoshop skills!), etc. There is ALWAYS something that can be done: uploading patterns to other sites than Ravelry, planning tutorials or blog posts, and so on. I wrote a whole post here on learning to develop my own website — not necessarily a skill you’d think you’d need as a knitting pattern designer!

Usually, though not ideally, those tasks spill over into the afternoon.

Knitting is just that:  swatching or working on a pattern in progress. I’ll knit or swatch in the evening as well. If I’m on a deadline, I’ll try to do more knitting, but if I knit more than a certain length of time (several hours) I’ll get to a point where my hands (especially my left) start aching and I need to stop. We’ve all been there!

If I’m working a full day at a vet clinic, I’ll work on computer stuff at lunch, and hope to knit in the evening when I get home.  If it’s just a half day, I hope to catch up on computer stuff and knit once I’m home. I’ll do quick tasks before heading off to work (if I start something involved, I tend to lose track of time!).

Decluttering: Paper

Before I started going through all of my papers, I never would have claimed to be a paper hoarder. I thought I was pretty good at throwing old junk mail out a couple times a week and filing things that are important…and forgetting that a lot of time I tend to shove paper in file just to get it out of my sight. Now that I’ve been through it, I have to admit that I had a problem.

Case in point:
awful paper

Did I even know what I kept in this file? Not at all. It was just junk that had probably accumulated on my desk. I think I found one useful file in all of this. Same for my other three file boxes. I found some business receipts, some old W-2s, and other once useful documents, but mostly, I found junk. Wadded post-its, old syllabi, the orientation folder from when I worked at Target from approxiamately 5 minutes back in 2008… Readers, I found Japanese homework. I haven’t studied Japanese since 2005. I don’t even know how that got filed since I didn’t buy that folder until I started Tiny Dino Studios in 2011.

And my file folders weren’t even the worst part. Check out my craft drawer:

messy paper in messy drawers

1. The drawers are just plain messy, but I’m not organizing yet, I’m still in the decluttering stage.
2. What even is that jumble? I don’t even know.

I think things like this are a symptom of not spending enough time in my studio. I give myself just long enough to complete my project, but not enough time for clean up, so when I go in to start something new, I just shove the leftover stuff from last time out of sight. Also, I don’t have a trash can in my studio. I really should remedy that.

I don’t have any pretty pictures to show you, because even though my files boxes are functional and I know where all my important stuff is, the rest of my studio is still a disaster. The files boxes and binders are waiting patiently on my desk for their turn to find a home.

What was important in this project was gather all of the paper into one place and sorting it one piece at a time. Like the books, it was a bigger job than I expected. It took me a few hours to find and rifle through all that. In the end, I threw away four bags of what was essentially trash that I had been carrying around for years, which was extremely satisfying.

Weekly Challenge: Landscape …

For this week’s challenge, share a photo of a landscape: a wide establishing shot of a scene in nature or an urban setting. Landscape photography is typically displayed in a horizontal orientation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have 3 choices for landscape.
A snippet of landscape through the door of a Martha’s Vineyard lighthouse…
