Books!

IMG_0822 IMG_0823 IMG_0825 IMG_0826 IMG_0827 IMG_0828 IMG_0829

A couple of times a week, I spend the morning volunteering at the town library. Usually, I cover new books and take them up to circulation so they can get right onto the new book shelf. A side effect of that is that my “to read” list of books gets longer all the time. I take photos of the covers from books that look interesting on my phone and when I get home I can download them and investigate. It’s a win-win situation.

Neve Behind The Lens

Today I sent Neve out with my camera to capture just how much the babies have grown and how ready those ewes are to deliver.  She’s been doing “butt checks” (checking for any ladies with broken waters or emerging lamb) several times a day for me anyway, so she was happy to add the camera work.

She and Maddie also do a midnight butt check for me – our thinking is that if by midnight they aren’t showing any signs and we don’t disturb them too much then they probably won’t lamb before morning.  We’ll see how this works out.  I’m calling it the “lazy peoples’ approach to lambing”.

Amelia looks closest to lambing – her udder is enormous and her flanks are totally hollow (in humans we say the baby “drops”, in ewes is gives them a hollow look about the flanks).  She’s been looking this way for a few days now, and according to when we think we saw her bred her due date was yesterday.  So….. any time now.

Piper also has a fairly big bag – kind of surprising for a first – timer.  Which makes me think she is fairly close to lamb as well.

Furble has adjusted well to life as a farm cat.  She hangs out most days with the chickens.

All milking has stopped since I have been sick.  It makes me sad, actually.  We’ll try to pick up again soon, but I’m not sure it will work out after such a long break.  The babies sure aren’t complaining!

Aster and Basil.

My favorite thing – kid in bucket!!

Doesn’t Miss Amelia just look ready?

Piper.  See that udder and teat back there?

Starting Saturday we’re expecting several days of colder temps and rain.  I hope they go before then.

Mood Reading

btt button

Does your current mood affect your reading? Affect your choices? I know there are plenty of books I enjoy, but only if Im in a particular kind of mood–or books that can lift me out of a bad mood without fail. Surely I’m ot alone?

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

Marinated Salmon

IMG_0475

The grill isn’t hasn’t fully emerged from the snow just yet so I opted to bake this marinated salmon and it turned out quite well. This recipe went over very well so I’m sure we’ll revisit it in summer and try it properly on the grill. I served just a simple steamed spinach and carrots on the side. Yum!

Nothing To See Here……

Sorry for the prolonged lack of posting – I seem to have picked up a nasty, nasty virus and have been stuck on the couch for days now.  I am way behind on everything and I haven’t even been able to read thanks to dizziness.

There’s no new babies yet – the sheep have blessedly taken it easy on me in my misery.

See you back here soon.

Let’s Talk about Gardening

gardenmidjune2

It’s time (or perhaps a little past time) to start putting the summer garden together. The photo above shows just about the entire extent of my gardening abilities. We have three Earth Boxes two potato planters and a few pots for herbs. Last year we had a modest new potato crop, two good tomato plants, an eggplant a day, plenty of fresh herbs and one super giant zucchini.

059 Garden from 2011 with strawberries and cucumbers. (The cucumbers were awesome that year. Last year we had one and the plant shriveled and dyed because of the heat the very next day.)

I have tried and failed for the last two years to grow spinach and peas. Is that going to stop me from attempting them this year? No way! I realize though, that if I am going to grow them, I need to get a move on. I haven’t even started cleaning the balcony up from winter yet. That’s first on the agenda. Then tracking down fertilizer and dolomite for the earth boxes.

zuchinniblossomI can’t tell you how excited I am for spring and for growing things and big yellow blossoms and the promise of fresh, sun-warmed produce.

The balcony garden is not the only thing I am doing this year. During the summer, I will be tending a Sunflower garden out at my Dad’s house to grow some flowers for the wedding. Then, at my Dad’s church, they are starting a community garden project.

What are you growing? Where do you grow it? And how?
