Dipping my toes back in

Hi folks.

It has been a crazy few weeks here in Jenn’s world, with upheaval galore.   Most of it is work related, and I am still trying to figure out the new landscape, since the changes that happened ended up very different than the changes I was expecting at the end of December.  Mostly, it’s just meant I’ve been spending even more time inside my head, thinking, pondering, turning things over (and over and over and over).

Breaking blog silence to note that today is the anniversary of one of the interesting, quirky stories of Boston history – the Molasses Flood.  I remember the first time I heard about it, and it just made me giggle – how scary could a flood of molasses (in January, no less!) really be?  It turns out, very scary indeed, and when you see the pictures of it, you start to realize that this was no joke.   That’s an elevated train line, knocked over by the flood.

There’s an excellent book about the disaster, detailing how and why it happened and the ensuing trial, if you want to know more.

I’ve been knitting like a fiend, with three different projects going (at least? no, actually, I think it’s four…*counts in head* yes, four.) My favorite right now is the half of a BFF cowl that I am making for a swap with some of my Ravelry friends. I splurged on Swan Island merino for it, and it is lovely to work with. The pattern is easy enough to remember without having the chart handy, but interesting enough to keep me entranced with it. There is little better for happiness making than a knitting project that’s really enjoyable.

Isn't she just lovely?

Isn’t she just lovely?

The time it never stopped raining…

Dear Whomever;

Enough with the rain already! We are all just exhausted from being wet and cold all the time.

I don’t know if you can see that tiny strip of dry gravel next to the barn, but that’s where the chickens are attempting to huddle. Ever heard that expression “Madder than a wet hen”? It’s a fact, y’all. These chickens are ticked the hell off.

The sheep and goats have spent the whole week perfecting their pathetic baas. Apparently that’s a better use of their time than just, you know, going into the barn and drying off.

Cini, the elder statesman of the farm doesn’t believe in suffering in the rain for no good reason.

Lucy and Gnocchi have gone full mud puppy, though.

Only the ducks seem to be happy with this grim and dreary weather.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have an ark to build.

Partings

Sunday night was the last book club for our dear friend Theresa.  Tomorrow she and her family are moving to New Jersey, where her husband will be taking on a new role as a professor.  While we wish them well in their new home and exciting new adventures to come, Theresa’s departure leaves a void not easily filled (and I doubt we’ll even try).

Gabi made a lovely stack of  books cake with three of Theresa’s favorite books we’ve read (The Thirteenth Tale, The Shadow of the Wind, See You in A Hundred Years).

It was a bittersweet night; trying to get as much Theresa as we could before having to say goodbye, while remembering our favorite – and funniest – moments from our collective past.  We tried to find meaningful ways for her to “take us with her” in a sense – a margarita glass signed by all of us, a framed print of our group photos from the beach, and a book charm bracelet with some of our books.

It will be sad, moving forward, but we still have email and skype, and she will continue to join us at the beach every summer.

I can tell you I am particularly proud to have known Theresa, as she joyously and fearlessly embraced my journey to become a shepherd and farmer, lending a hand wherever and whenever possible.  She came through and saved our backsides when it came time to process our meat chickens – without her help it would have been a lot worse, I assure you.  Not for nothing do we refer to each other as “soul sister”.  Her daughter Zoe and my Oona have been fast friends – making this bittersweet for Oona as well (or just bitter, if you ask her).

Good luck, Theresa. You really are the sweetest of us.  We’ll miss  you dearly.

Foggy Days of Winter….

It has been a wet and foggy several days. It started at as warm (hence the fog on the river, isn't it beautiful?) but now the cold is creeping in.  Greg struggles with this kind of weather, but luckily he is heading to Florida for work in a week.  Layla and I will stay here and continue to provide Quality Control at the house project.

But the tile is going in!

And the old cabinets have been placed as of this picture, but installed yesterday.

We just don't have the cash right now to do a full blown kitchen renovation, so we had the room gutted, the wiring replaced where we WILL want it when we do the rest of the work and new dry wall was installed.  I'm going by in a bit to hopefully find that "we" managed to salvage the old (ugly) counter top as well.

The house ended at the end of the cabinets in the picture.  Everything beyond is new.

Lesson learned. (AGAIN.) Expect a home renovation project to go over budget AT LEAST 10%.  We are beyond the bottom of the barrel now.....but it I think we will make it!

In the mean time I have decided this will not be a pottery month.  My folks are downsizing (I may post more about that...) so I have been helping them go through their treasures (being the closest geographically and the only daughter you KNOW some have come home with me.)  I am trying to get another blanket on my loom at the studio, but between being called away to put out fires at the house, painting radiators (golly but spray painting is hard on the hands!), working on a knitted sock commission and just my own lack of motivation with the yucky weather it isn't getting done.  (Throw in DVRd Downton Abbey....)

Maybe today...

And Layla's tail is nearly healed!  We will retire the Cone of Shame in a week or so.

(Her tail is even blurry because she's waggin' it hoping for a cookie!)

Vineyard Haven – Martha’s Vineyard

A quickie

This baby quilt kit I bought last fall goes together very quickly. I am already half done with the quilt top which is a good thing since the little mr. arrived a couple weeks early.

The Elephant in the Front Pasture

This morning I was awoken by the most godawful noise coming from the front pasture. I thought to myself, “I don’t remember buying an elephant,” but that’s exactly what it sounded like.

It turned out only to be Luna, our Randall’s Lineback dairy cow. It seems she is in heat, and it is making her rather miserable.

She spends her days mooning (and mooing) around the pasture, searching high and low for the bull that she is sure must be around here somewhere.

In my head I know that this is a biochemical reaction, but it breaks my heart to hear her sounding so forlorn.

If I were in the market for another calf, now would be the time to have Luna impregnated using artificial insemination. There are actually catalogs of semen from various prize winning bulls! Randall Lineback semen is a little harder to find, but it is available.

Since I’m not planning to breed Luna this year, we will all just have to suffer through the next 12 hours.

Smattering of all kinds of random!

Well in checking the last blog post, I can see I’ve been post mute since the fall of 2012. My bad. The reality is I’m just a sucky ass blogger. But to make up for it, here is the first 2013 post! Glitter! Rainbows! Unicorns! Or Not. There is, however, some cooking. First new recipe… […]

The Jacob’s Ladder quilt is done and dusted. I’m really pleased with the border and Riley obviously approves. I need to find a box for it and send it on it’s happy way. I hope it brings some small comfort to the intended recipient.
