Yarned by You: Hat Edition

Today’s Yarned by  You looks at hats. Maybe you’re still feeling a bit burnt out from Christmas knitting, but need something quick to get your mojo back. Or maybe you have (or someone you love has) a chilly noggin. A hat is the perfect solution! It knits fast! One size fits many! Even if it doesn’t fit its recipient, it will likely fit someone, unless you make it big enough for a giant. (Well, I don’t know. Maybe you actually have some friends that are giants.)

Here’s a quick look at various hats that people are knitting. Click the picture to be taken to the Ravelry page where you can learn what about the pattern and the yarn they’re knitting with. (I like to play “Guess the Yarn” while looking these up.)

Yarned by You: Designed by You

It’s been AGES since I did a Yarned by You, but especially after my trip to Rhinebeck, I’m feeling inspired to look at everyone’s knits. And just like Susan posted yesterday, I’m thinking about Christmas knitting and wondering what I should make. I’m working on convincing my family to exchange Secret Santa names early this year (we do Secret Santa for the adults – it allows everyone to get one great gift instead of a bunch of slightly less great gifts) so that I have time to knit whoever I get something. (My whole family is very knit-worthy!)

So I went cruising through Ravelry to see what designers are creating in our yarn. All of these patterns are available as Ravelry downloads, so you’re able to get knitting right away, either from your JMF stash, or by stopping by your LYS and picking something up. Click through the picture to get all the details.

First is Brazos Valley Shawl by Jenna Swanson. It’s knit sideways in two colors of Herriot, with the cabled border added afterwards. Also, it’s 50% off with the coupon code junipermoonfarm! But only for a limited time, so you better get on that!

This Chadwick Scarf was designed by Lynnette Connors. It has a lovely cable and would be perfect for a man or a woman. There are two size options – the small size that takes just a single ball of Chadwick, and the larger one that uses two balls.

This Cranberry Crush Cowl by Kay Hopkins has my name written all over it. I haven’t tried Brioche stitch yet, but this seems like a great, repetitive project for it and would be perfect for a slightly dressy outfit. I can easily see myself wearing it for a night on the town or in the office. This Cranberry color is one of the new colors of Findley for Fall / Winter 2013!

It’s no secret that we love Sabine, so it’s not surprising that I adore Elvenflyt by Sierra Anderson.  Doesn’t the pom pom on the top just make the hat? And I love how the ribbing is worked into the pattern. Even in the largest size, this is a one-skein pattern!

I’m head over heels for Junco by Sarah Jo Burch. It uses three colors of Herriot, but the colorwork is uses only two colors at a time. The cowl is folded over so all your floats are safely hidden inside!

Junco by Sarah JoBurch

On the Front Porch Swing by Linda Day Morehouse is a pretty, semi circular shawl that takes less than one ball of Findley. The lace is delicate and sweet and would be perfect for a little something special for a someone special.

Sarah Parker, of WildFibers in Washington created this cute headband and fingerless mitts pattern which uses Herriot. Susie and I saw these during the trunk show and we both swooned over them!

Square in a Square cowl is and elegant cowl that looks great in three colors of Moonshine. I bet that it would work well with just one or two colors of Moonshine, too. Patricia Ritter did a great job matching the perfect buttons to the yarn colors, don’t you think?

What gifts are you thinking of knitting in JMF yarns this season? Or what patterns do you think would look great in JMF yarns and be a perfect gift for someone?

This week, I was enamored with a bunch of projects. These are all fun things I could definitely see myself making!

I’ve had the Nouveau Beaded Capelet in my favorites for quite awhile! I love the shape of it, even if I have a hard time coming up with a regular occasion to wear such and elegant piece. I love what msuper did with hers, made in Findley.

I recently posted about the Big Tile Pullover. At the same time I first spotted it, realhelen did, too! She knit up this sweater super fast thanks to Bulky Yearling!

There will be a new baby girl in my life in August, and the sweet Feeling Sheepish baby sweater that bkroll made would be perfect! The pink and white yarns are Chadwick, the moon is Willa, and the juniper tree is her 2012 spring share yarn dyed in Ojai. Truly an all-encompassing JMF yarn sweater!

After my Berzelius scarf, I’m making a cowl in Herriot. It’s not the Dovetail Cowl that pageta knit, but I could see this cowl in my future! It is a pattern that I looks great on both sides and could be easily adapted to a scarf.

wonderfullyknit knit this slouchy Sabine hat wonderfully! I love the two color thick and thin stripes and the Country Road colorway makes a great manly color.

And you can’t go wrong with a hat made of squishy Marlowe! cgilbert made this lovely cabled hat.

And finally, my favorite project this week is entirely whimsical! Using Herriot, lochknitsmonster made Napoleon the nervous narwhal! It’s it adorable?!

Do you have any favorite JMF projects that you’ve seen recently? It will keep our minds off waiting for lambs!

This is going to be a more low-key Yarned by You post. It’s the day after Christmas, and although I didn’t receive any medication that makes me feel icky like Susan did, I’m feeling pretty exhausted by the season. So I’m bringing you a few projects that received the most favorites on Ravelry so that you can be sure to see the beauty too.

Yarned by You: Crochet Gallery

One thing that’s been missing so far in these Yarned by You posts is crochet. I’ve been saving up my very favorite ones for a crochet-celebration post! There were many projects to chose from and you’ll be sure to see more in the future. But enough talk. Let’s look at the pretties!

A father’s day present, doodlemuse stitched up this Crochet Ribbed Scarf in Yearling. My favorite tag is “oh-please-work.” Don’t we all have projects like that??

sparker crocheted this absolutely adorable Sleepy owl Hat with Yearling for Wildfibers in Mount Vernon, Washington.

Having only crocheted for a year, frogleg33 tackeled Gathering Leaves in Findley’s Fresca for a friend to use as a wedding shawl!

ihoot whipped up this Long Tailed Baby Elf Hat out of Sabine in colorways Sirius and Sea Glass.

Adding just a touchy of lacy crochet with Findley (colorway Bittersweet) to a neckline really perks up Laura Nelkin’s dress! She wrote a blog post on it here.

Lmstuart made this gorgeous Lace Canopy Cardi Wrap. It reminds me so much of Stippled Ink designed by Caroline Fryar for Findley Dappled; both are in Unical.

Who doesn’t love a handcrocheted basket to keep one’s eggs in? Spaz modified a Round Cushion pattern using Chadwick in Hannah. I bet those eggs feel very snuggled!

It seems that LuckyPenny didn’t have her luck with her after crocheting this gorgeous dress in Sabine based on Persimmon Pullover by Doris Chan (who does crochet at its finest!). I was bummed to read that she didn’t even get a chance to wear it before it was lost. I suppose it’s too much to hope that it will turn up in the darndest place (like under the TV cabinet)?

Pick up a hook and some JMF yarn and get hooking! I want to see what fabulous things you can come up with!

New Feature: Yarned by You! – Chadwick Gallery

Hi everyone!

Lauria here. You might know me as one of the moderators on the JMF Ravelry Group. You might know me as the test knitting coordinator for Juniper Moon Farm’s Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter 2012 yarn lines. You might know me as the cover girl for the Sabine Booklet:

You might not know me from Adam!

But you’re about to, because I cajoled Susan into letting me do a series of blog posts because I’m constantly looking at and favorite-ing projects on Ravelry made with Juniper Moon Farm Yarn. There are so many gorgeous projects, they just have to be shared! So every Wednesday I’m going to post some of my favorite projects found on Ravelry. (All names listed are Ravelry names and the photos will take you to their Ravelry page.)

As the weather is starting to get cool in New England, I thought it would be the perfect time to take a look at Chadwick. In case you missed it, Chadwick is 60% Merino / 40% Baby Alpaca and 202 yards come in a center pull ball. It’s deliciously soft, airy, and unbelievably warm – perfect for fall knitting and crocheting to wear well into winter.

First up, these Sluggy Bonnets (designed for Chadwick by Tanis Gray and available for free right here!) were knit by jdunsmore

They’re done in the same colors as the original (Swimming Pool, Clear Skies, Clean Sheets), but using one of the contrasting colors as the master color in each hat. You can knit three hats out of three balls by doing this!

Another Sluggy Bonnet, this time done by yarncakes:

I adore these colors (Hannah, Mississippi Mud, Clean Sheets) together, don’t you?

Sheeri made this great Fair Isle V-Neck Sweater (also designed by Tanis Gray specifically for Chadwick) in Clear Skies and Dawn:

I love the added torso length on this sweater, and when I get around to making mine, I’ll be sure to do the same.

This Spiderweb Capelet, knit by subpolka in Hannah, really makes her red hair POP:

Such a pretty openwork pattern and I adore the pom poms! From subpolka: “I ADORE this yarn! Animal fibers typically make my skin crawl, but the Chadwick is sooooooo soft and snuggly.” I would be so sad if animal fibers made my skin crawl! I’m glad that subpolka has at least this yarn to turn to.

This Rocky Coast Cardigan,  looks like the perfect thing for mere to be able to layer as the weather changes.

I love the textured stitches and open front. Knit in Mercury, it definitely evokes a rocky coastal sea!

I’m a sucker for a pun, and knitting Mystic Pullover in colorway Swimming Pool and calling the project Swimming Poolover? smelanie88 is clearly my kind of girl!

Check out her project page to see the great side-seam pockets!

Last up this is gorgeous colorwork scarf called Min Ulla knit in Indian Paintbrush and Clean Sheets by MargaretNuovo:

It reminds me of what Susan affectionately calls The $300 Scarf if you were to knit it in two colors instead of all the colors that Chadwick is available in.

Didn’t these women do amazing jobs? There are so many great Chadwick projects on Ravelry, it was really difficult to narrow it down! In fact, you haven’t seen the last of Chadwick, yet!

What are your favorite Chadwick yarnings? Share your projects (or projects you admire!) in the comments below!
