The Heart of Acadiana

Tabasco Avery island Avery island J & J
Yesterday we drove down to Lafayette, La where I lived for many years. We spent the afternoon out on Avery Island where we toured the Tabasco plant and Poked around Jungle Gardens. It’s the tail end of nesting season and there was an absolute cacophony of chicks begging their momma birds for a little smackeral. We saw little green herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills and much much more.

For dinner at my old favorite Cafe Vermillionville, my step-daughter Kathryn and high school friend joined us along with their significant others. The food was delightful and Kathryn was a star and picked up a Poupart’s Dobash torte for me. Bliss!

Yesterday we had a great lunch at Joe T. Garcia’s and then spent some time at the Kimbell Art Museum. We also had some excellent BBQ for dinner at Steven’s Garden and Grill.

It’s not Blackbeard’s loot but I did come home with a few nice things. I found some great sock knitting books and some new-to-me sock yarn. I found some nice stationery, a lovely new fountain pen (Cross Townsend Chrome), as well as a fabulous hand thrown teapot. I made some great progress on my Swallowtail shawl. I may have even picked up a postcard or two. The full set of photos from our North Carolina trip is here.

These are the dunes at Jockey Ridge. Maybe they are not as tall and impressive as those we saw at Great Sand Dunes National Monument in Colorado but they were fun to climb.

We could see why this was a good place for the Wright brothers to work. It was indeed extremely windy!

There are a few pelicans and gulls in this swirling cloud of birds but I think most of them are cormorants. This is the bridge on Cape Hatteras that goes over the Alligator River. I’m told that often you can see a lot of osprey there.
