Weekly Photo Challenge: Structure…

I tend to like abandoned structures and also stone walls,  in looking through my photographs I came across not actual stone walls but the stone wall ruins of an abandoned woolen mill in Dingman’s Ferry, PA.

Around 1826 Joseph Brooks, a Welshman who had immigrated to Philadelphia built a woolen mill of stone, 3 1/2 stories high in Dingmans Ferry.  He employed about 80 workers.

His sheep however, were devoured by wolves or died from eating poisonous laurel.  Supplies, operatives and materials such as expensive raw wool, had to be brought in from Philadelphia and the finished products shipped back to Philadelphia by wagons, a trip which took 10 days.  Brooks died in 1832 and the mill was abandoned.  Here are my pictures of the ruins of the mill.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Atop…

The prompt is :This week, consider your point of view as you respond to this challenge’s theme, “Atop.” If you’re physically on top of a thing or a place — a mountain, a skyscraper — what type of scene do you want to share in your frame? Consider, too, other interpretations of “Atop”

Picture #1 is two of my favorite people atop a slide ready to whoosh down.

Picture #2 is atop Cadillac Mountain at Acadia Nat’l Park in Maine.  From atop the mountain you can look down at Bar Harbor. I believe Cadillac Mountain is also the most eastern spot in the US and the first to see the sunrise.

Stone Faces …

Collecting rocks and stones is something you can’t avoid doing as you walk along a Vineyard beach. I admit I didn’t find the one with this poem:

“Weathered posts and sea grass, waves rushing in to kiss the shore; I closed my eyes and peace descends, I’m at The Vineyard once more.”

I didn’t find the stones below on he beach either.

These beautiful stone sculptures were done by a Native American from Aquinnah. I asked him how he knows what to sculpt and he told me that he has to get to know the stone first… let it speak to him and tell him what it is meant to be…  only then does he begin the process of letting the spirit emerge from the stone.

This particular stone is double-ended.

The face of a Native American.

The spirit of an eagle.

I particularly like this one below. I like the way the face looks peaceful and wise.

Something I find interesting about these sculptures is that when you’re holding them they’re both cool and warm. Perhaps it’s the spirit from within.
