The In-Depth Look:

I love Romi’s designs and have more than one of her shawls in my collection, so I was very excited when I heard about this new book of hers.

She says in the intro, “For years, this book has been a tiny pinpoint of an idea niggling in the back of my mind. As I became more familiar with lace knitting, I became more and more fascinated with the way lace patterns were constructed. I loved how the placement of increases and decreases could alter a pattern, perhaps making it wave, and how changes in the types of decreases could transform the look of a pattern so completely. … This book is a collection of themes and variations. The lace patterns are traditional, not new by any means. But I have used them to put together a collection of lace garments and accessories that can be worn today, and any day.”

What follows is a collection of designs–sweaters, wraps, hats, scarves–that all use lace, sometimes (like in the shawls) as the main feature, but sometimes (like in many of the sweaters) as an extra touch, something to make it stand out and be different.

It doesn’t surprise me at all that I like most of the designs in this collection. (I would actually have been more surprised if I hadn’t, but that’s what prior experience with Romi’s designs will do for you.)

Simply, great patterns, great designs, and I think I’m about to go stash-diving so I can dive right in.

You can get this great book at your local shop or order it at Amazon.com.

New Pen, Nearly Complete

Paul has spent a lot of time outside working hard to get a new fence in place.  As of this evening, it’s about 99% complete.  Paul has some finishing “Orzo proofing” touches to put on it first. And by “Orzo proof”, I mean, “cross your fingers”. We think we’ve got it worked out, but we don’t want to be overly cocky.

It’s a fairly small pen, given what our needs are, but we are going to do it one section at a time, as we can afford it.

It did make me very happy to bring the flock up and put them out on fresh grass this evening while Lucy ran around and played without being tethered.

The flock and dogs will spend the winter in this pen while we work on the remaining fencing and property.  For now, I am going to enjoy sitting on the front porch and watching my lovely flock graze.

Weekly Challenge: Happy Place …

Weekly prompt: Where do you go when you need to think? What do you do when you need to restore yourself, to ready yourself to take on the coming week with energy and verve? How do you get your sense of humor back? How do you recharge your groove?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There’s no doubt in my mind as to where my happy place is… it’s Martha’s Vineyard… it’s where my heart and soul reside and where I feel restored and peaceful and happy.
I know I use a lot of photos from the Vineyard here, and I have been trying to use pictures from other places…but this week’s challenge HAS to be the Vineyard… just no way around it :)
My happy place is the Tabernacle in the town of Oak Bluffs … no matter when I’m there I go and sit quietly and listen to my inner voice.
Peace. Serenity. Beauty.  Home. Memories.
Tripping New England …
I’m taking a girl trip later this month to New England with my daughter Deb and our friend Dawn and there will be a post or so about it… but in the meantime I want to re-post  part of a trip Deb and I made 20 years ago to Newport, Rhode Island.
We had spent the earlier part of the week on Martha’s Vineyard but that’s a re-post for a later date.  We left the Vineyard and headed for an over night stay in Newport, Rhode Island, a place Deb had never been to and I raved about.
I had made reservations at a bed & breakfast, which is NOT pictured here… this is the beautiful Rosecliff mansion.
We figured we’d check in and then go have lunch by the harbor.  The best laid plans often go astray as we were finding out
101_4572
We pulled into the circular driveway of what once had been a gorgeous mansion.  The operative word here is… once.  The first thing we noticed was the roof being torn off and being tossed onto the driveway.  OK, a little renovation is a good thing.
There were no other cars in the driveway (an omen perhaps).
There were spider webs by the front door, not such a good thing, even if Halloween was only days away.
The door was bolted so we rang the bell.
Lurch opened it.  All right, it wasn’t Lurch, but this man was big and wore an eye patch and had a low gravely, grumbly voice.  OK, maybe there wasn’t an eye patch but there should have been.
 We entered with trepidation what at one time years ago had been a beautiful mansion but was now drab, threadbare, and frankly creepy.  The beautifully carved wood circular staircase was  covered by the most horrible ugly green carpeting imaginable.  We signed in and were lead  upstairs to our room (cue ominous music). I think on the way up we were warned told not to ever venture into the east wing !  Or maybe that was from ‘Beauty and the Beast’… at any rate I remember hearing some words of caution, or welcome, or whatever.
Walked into the room… it was large, there was a queen size bed, also a cot, the floors were bare, nothing matched,  everything was worn out looking, it was dusty and unwelcoming, there was also the constant banging on the roof, or was it coming from the closet !
I didn’t want to put my suitcase down, I paced nervously around clutching my bags.  Deb looked at me and I at her mumbling things like “I don’t know about this”  “I don’t like it here” “this is spooky”.  She asked if I wanted to go home? I nodded.
We made a beeline down the stairs, mumbled a few words to the owner, flung open the seemingly stuck front doors, threw our luggage in the car and high tailed it out of there.
We did however have one of the best lunches ever.  We drove to the harbor and ate outside at the Mooring.  The whole time we were eating we were laughing and talking about the weird B&B and the seemingly spooky owners.  Our waitress came over to ask the usual “how is everything” question and before I knew it I was telling her about our … um, episode at the B&B.  She told us she’d heard some weird stories about the place.  We agreed we’d definitely made the right decision in leaving.
We left Newport with 3 minutes to spare on the parking meter and headed home to NJ.  This trip was one for the books.
Wonder what our upcoming girl trip will bring in the way of adventure.. perhaps a visit to the past !!!
What two authors (dead or alive) would you love to get in a room together, just so you could listen to the conversation?
And what made you put those two together? Are they going to be entertainingly contentious or bosom buddies at first sight?
Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!
Quick Review: Vintage Knits for Babies by Rita Taylor
cover vintage babiesVintage Knits for Babies by Rita Taylor
This collection of knits for babies features designs based on vintage baby clothes from the 1920s to 1950s.
The patterns are grouped into loose categories (Christening, Out & About, Wrap Up Warm, etc) and are often presented as sets (gown, booties, and bonnet, for example). There’s also a section on toys, including an adorable bunny called the Primrose Rabbit, and a set of building blocks (great for stashbusting scraps).
I count a total of 30 different patterns and pattern sets (the total pattern count would be a lot more).  Unfortunately only two patterns are listed on Ravelry. :/
Sizing ranges from one size only to two or three (including sweaters/garments); one cardigan was offered in four sizes.
Many of the patterns include lace details; the others are textured, including a cute textured sailboat motif.  There are a couple stranded designs, including a teddy bear sweater. Although many of the patterns are modeled by girls, and the styling of the book is very romantic, there are plenty of patterns that are unisex.
I received my copy from the publisher.
