Memories Of An October Adventure …

In October of 1995 my daughter Deb and I went to MV and Newport, Rhode Island for an autumn get-away.

 Part 1 – Martha’s Vineyard

We were supposed to leave NJ on Saturday. Due to the forecast of heavy rain my husband suggested we leave Friday after Deb got home from work and stay over night in Mystic, Ct.  Deb got off from work early and we left around 3pm.  Things were going smoothly for oh, at least an hour and then 7 or so miles before the dreaded Tappan Zee Bridge things came to a dead stop.  We decided to get off at the next exit and wend our way through the smaller back highways and eventually rejoin good old route I-95.  Sounded like a good plan.  Actually a lot of motorists thought so too and before we knew it we were stuck in a worse traffic jam.  And…. that rain that we were trying to avoid…well, it came early and it was heavy and oh, it was also getting dark !  Nine hours later at 11:30pm we arrived in Mystic, Ct… a drive that should have only taken 3 or 4 hours at the most.  And so our adventure had begun.

The next morning we arrived in Woods Hole and got an earlier ferry to Martha’s Vineyard… we like when that happens.

We checked into the Victorian Inn, which is one of our favorite places to stay and spent the day walking and relaxing.  After supper it began pouring,  I half-kiddingly said we should take a walk in the rain and before I knew it that’s what we were doing.  I never like walking in the rain, especially in the dark, but for some reason it just seemed the right thing to be doing.

The following day after breakfast we rented bikes.

101_5363   101_5364

Mind you it had been years since I’d been on a bike and I’d never used hand brakes… but how hard could they be !!   Off we trotted to the bike shop by the harbor in Edgartown.   After a few instructions … most of which I’d missed we got on our bikes and headed out of the shop.   Somehow I wound up not on the road but heading for a hedge of flowers and before I knew it had made contact with them… it was all in slow motion so it seemed like an eternity until I hit the ground.   I laughed and so did the rental guy, my daughter though after showing concern for my well being was convinced I’d want to turn in the bikes and forget about our ride.  But no, I was determined to carry on after we’d gone back to the inn however so I could bandage my cuts and bruises.   So back on the bike I got and we headed to the inn just a block or so away.  I was doing pretty well until I turned into their driveway and sort of, well, bumped into one of the cars in their lot.  Finally    got myself put together and once again started off on our bikes… my daughter still wasn’t convinced we’d make it out of Edgartown.   You’ll be happy to know that I was finally getting the hang of the hand brakes even though I automatically was using my feet too… sometimes dragging them on the ground as a back up maneuver.

100_8676 101_5368

The road between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs is 6 miles of scenic beauty… for most of the ride the ocean is on one side and Sengekontacket Pond is on the other… it’s one of the prettiest bike paths (or roads) on MV.   We stopped several times to take pictures and for me to catch my breath.   At one point the bike path changes from one side of the road to the other… there are big signs telling you about this…  I missed them.   When I saw my daughter move across the road I figured I should follow suit… as I have a problem turning my neck I didn’t see the truck that was coming down the road.   I made it to the other side still not aware how close the truck had come… I do however remember the scared and horrified look on my daughter’s face.   She claims to this day that I gave her several grey hairs… I say, turn about is fair play.

It was a fun day… the company, the weather, the experience of hand brakes… I’m glad we did it ……. once.

The following day was spent driving around the Vineyard.  Not too much walking was done due to the sore leg muscles one of us had… not mentioning names but I’m sure after reading about our bike trip that you can guess who it was !  Tuesday was also the most normal of our four day get away… a ploy perhaps to coax us into a false sense of security!  That remained to be seen!

Part 2 – Newport, Rhode Island

Our plan called for us to stay overnight in Newport, RI… a place Deb had never been to and I raved about.

I had made reservations at a bed & breakfast, which is NOT pictured here.  We figured we’d check in and then go have lunch by the harbor.  The best laid plans often go astray as we were finding out… this part of our trip was no different.

101_4572We pulled into the circular driveway of what once had been a gorgeous mansion.  Once.  The first thing we noticed was the roof being torn off and being tossed onto the driveway.  OK, a little renovation is a good thing. There were no other cars in the driveway (an omen perhaps). The spider webs by the front door, not such a good thing, even if Halloween was only days away.  The door was locked so we rang the bell.  Lurch opened it.  All right, it wasn’t Lurch, but this man was big and wore an eye patch and had a low gravely, grumbly voice.  Maybe there wasn’t an eye patch but there should have been.

We walked into what at one time had years ago must have been a beautiful mansion but was now drab, threadbare, and frankly creepy.  The circular staircase was beautiful wood covered by the most horrible ugly green carpeting imagineable.  We signed in and were lead us upstairs to our room (cue ominous music). Walked in… it was large, queen size bed, a cot, bare floors, nothing matched, high drafty ceilings with no lights, everything was worn out looking.  I didn’t want to put my suitcase down.  Deb looked at me and I at her mumbling things like “I don’t know”  “I don’t like it here” “this is spooky”.  She asked if I wanted to go home?  We made a beeline down the stairs, mumbled a few words to the owner, flung open the seemingly stuck front doors, threw our luggage in the car and high tailed it out of there.  Another slightly askew incident in our adventure.

We did however have one of the best lunches ever.  We drove to the harbor and ate outside at the Mooring.  The whole time we were eating we were laughing and talking about the weird bed and breakfast and the owners.  At one point our waitress came over to ask the usual “how is everything” question and before I knew it I was telling her about our … um, episode at the b&b.  She told us she’d heard some stories about the place that were on the weird side.  We agreed we’d definitely made the right decison in leaving.

We left Newport with 3 minutes to spare on the parking meter and headed home to NJ.  Since we were coming home a day early it was only fair to give my husband a heads up.  We called him from a rest stop, no answer so we left a message on the machine to alert him to our earlier arrival.  We called once more to update him and drove happily along. Meanwhile, at home he hadn’t bothered to listen to the messages and was completely surprised when we arrived a day early.

Thus ended a slightly off kilter, lovely and very memorable trip :)

A Baby Hat

Last week, I knit something for the first time in a long while. Yesterday, I sent it off in the mail.

image

My cousin has just had her first baby, and I knit her a fuzzy little hat for the birth announcement. I can’t wait to get to see her myself!

image

It took just as much time to drive to the yarn store and back as it did to knit the hat–I usually take on such long, tiny-needled projects that I’d forgotten how quick knitting can sometimes be.

image

All of which to say: I think I could get used to doing this (knitting) again.

image

This hat says (is meant to say): Baby Rose, I can’t wait to meet you; I’m so glad you’re in the world.

Chap-A-Versary …

101_2838

13 years ago today, Aug 25, 2001, Chappy came home to NJ to live with us.

It was a dark and stormy night… no wait, that’s another story.   It was actually a beautiful sunny, white puffy cloud, mild August day when Deb (his mom), and I traveled to Kittanning, PA to pick him up.   We had been there two weeks prior to look over the litter of new Boykin Spaniel puppies and to sort of reserve the one that would be coming home with us today.    We thought it went well, Deb chose the future Chappy and the breeder put a red mark inside his ear… he has since been referred to by us as… yes, red ear.

In the two week interim preparations were made for Chappy’s arrival… bedding, toys, food & water dishes, toys, crate, pillows, toys… you get the picture.

So off Deb and I went on Friday, Aug 24th to drive the 6 hours to Kittanning, spend the night and then pick red ear, oops, Chappy up in the morning.   Deb had spent the day at work  being anxious to get the day over with and get on the road.  Deb didn’t feel well that night, stress, the long drive, the anxiety of picking up Chappy, it all took a toll.   Soon morning rolled around and after a quick breakfast off to the breeder’s we headed.

The puppies were awake and adorable, they were playing and yipping and being all sorts of cute.

100_6770

Except one…. he was off to the side looking all unsure of everything… yes… it was indeed ‘red ear’…. oh dear.

100_6769

The breeder told Deb she was not under any obligation to take him as he wasn’t sure this puppy was adoptable at the time.    And that’s when I saw my daughter fall apart.    We thought we had it all worked out and would walk in, pick up the future Chappy and leave, well it wasn’t going to be that easy.

In the meantime other folks were coming in to pick out puppies and to be honest it was quite annoying that they would pick one up… look at it… say yes or no and be off.  How were they doing that… was there some kind of pup-telepathy that we didn’t have ?

As we stood there and mulled over the situation two of the puppies scampered over to us and pretty much wore themselves out vying to be Deb’s choice.

100_6772

I knew pretty much right off the bat which one I would choose and I really tried to hide my choice from Deb and let her make her own decision.   She says she could read on my face which one I liked best and I’m sure she could.   She was so distraught that at one point I blurted out that she could bring both of them home !!!

And so the competition continued… Mr Personality vs Mr Adorable.  Mr Personality was sleek and energetic and was quite lovable.  Mr Adorable was fuzzier faced and a little smooshed nosed and also energetic and lovable.

Which one did Deb choose, or rather who chose her.  Why it was Chappy of course, or formerly known as… Mr Adorable.  By the way, he was my choice from the very beginning… just saying.

100_6773

This is Chappy saying good-by to his parents Buddy & Tawny.  He looks a lot like his mom and has her sweet personality.

100_6774

With the traumatic morning behind us we headed on our 6 hour trip home.  Chappy slept in Deb’s lap for most of the ride only awakening when big scary trucks rumbled past or when we stopped for food or gas.

His first McDonald’s where he caused quite a commotion with his cuteness.

Illumination Night Memories …

101_5091

Illumination Night is Wed, Aug  20, 2014.

It has always been my favorite event of the summer… going to Illumination Night is a thrill for me no matter what my age is.

I think I was 2 and 1/2 the first time I went to Illumination Night.  I’m embarrassed to say that even with my annoyingly good memory, I don’t remember it. My first memory of Illumination Night involves wearing a particularly pretty dress so I’m thinking I was around three or four, which would have been around 1946.

My dad, mom, god-mother and I would have an early supper and then walk to the Campground. My dad and I would stroll around looking at all the beautifully decorated gingerbread houses while my mother and god-mother would chat with friends and relatives.

At 8 o’clock the Vineyard Haven Band would begin playing and the always fun community sing would start. Patriotic songs like, America The Beautiful, Yankee Doodle, Battle Hymn of the Republic are always stirring and emotional. It took me a couple of years to learn the words to all the songs and I still get messed up on a couple of the rounds like John Brown’s Baby. The band playing the Star Spangled Banner and the rousing Stars and Stripes Forever are always crowd pleasers.

But as much fun as that was it was only a precursor to the main event. The Tabernacle and Campground go dark… the crowd cheers. The lighting of the first lantern and then all the gingerbread houses are simultaneously aglow with Japanese lanterns. Everyone oohs and ahhs and stream out of the Tabernacle to walk through the magical fairyland the Campground has become. My dad would carry me on his shoulders so I could see everything… I felt like I could touch the stars.

After seeing all there was to see we’d head out onto Circuit Ave to either the Frosty Cottage for ice cream or Darling’s for popcorn. Always a tasty ending to a perfectly enchanting night.

Like I said, no matter your age, Illumination Night is fun for everyone. Just look at these faces from 1998…

If you’re on the Vineyard this Wed, Aug 20, 2014 you should go and experience Illumination Night.  :)

Awesome Awe-gust Awaits …

100_9855

In my opinion August is THE month to be on Martha’s Vineyard… not just because it’s the last full month of summer… but it’s jammed packed with special events.

My favorite is Illumination Night which this year is Wed, Aug 20, 2014.  I did a post about my memories of Illumination Night… 101_3019 CLICK HERE to read it   … and CLICK HERE for information on this year’s Illumination Night.

These are just three of MY personal favorite things to do on MV in August…  CLICK HERE to check out the MVOL.com calendar of events to see all the other fun and interesting things going on.

As a summer kid on the Vineyard August was always a special month for me.  Although my mom and I would arrive for the summer in June it wasn’t until August that my dad joined us until Labor Day when we’d all come home to New Jersey.

In the 40’s and 50’s August was filled with days at the beach, nightly rides on the Flying Horses, ice cream at the Frosty Cottage on Circuit Ave, popcorn bars at Darling’s also on Circuit Ave, trips to my mother’s cousins home in Indian Hill, band concerts in Ocean Park and community sings every Wed at the Tabernacle.

In the 90’s and 2000’s it was about introducing my grandchildren to August on the Vineyard.  Days at the beach, rides on the Flying Horses, ice cream at any number of places in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, bicycle rides,  miniature golf, and being together.

1984 Girl Trip …

In July 1984 I took my daughter Deb and her best friend Dawn to Martha’s Vineyard

Dawn and Deb – July 18, 1984

100_4392

Dawn and Deb – December 29, 2007

The trip was a new experience in some ways. I had never gone away alone with two teenagers, so that was different and I had never driven to MV by myself, so that was different.

We stayed at the Kelley House in Edgartown.

Breakfast by the pool one morning.

101_4948

We did a lot of things together but the girls also spent time doing their own things while I did mine. It was a nice mix of togetherness and apartness (is that a word).

We went to South Beach

100_4390 100_4389

Of course to Aquinnah to see the cliffs.

100_4391

The girls rented bikes one day while I went to the kite festival in Oak Bluffs, we had great weather and we laughed a lot, which is not hard to do around Deb and Dawn.

One incident that sticks out in my mind is dinner one night at The Wharf Pub & Restaurant in Edgartown. We ate early and the restaurant was almost empty. We were in the middle of our meal when our waitress came over to us and said.. “you might want to eat slowly as Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley are on their way in and I thought the girls might get a kick out of seeing them.” GIRLS… forget the girls, I was the one getting all excited. So we nibbled and waited, and waited… and then THEY walked past the window next to our table and into the restaurant. We wondered if it would be possible to say hello to them (it wasn’t), but as we left the restaurant and walked past their table Billy Joel smiled and waved. We giggled all the way back to the hotel and then called home to share our exciting news.

Thirty years later Deb and Dawn are still best friends and they still laugh A LOT when they’re together.

Chappy Is A Teen-Ager …

Today is Chappy’s 13th birthday.

He’s in this puppy pile somewhere !

As you can see he was being Vineyardized as soon as we got him home.

Soooooooooooo cute.

His first trip to MV at age 10 months.

All grown up.

Anchors But Not Aweigh …

How often have you walked past these anchors by the harbor in Edgartown and given any thought to how or why they are there…

…other than being used as a great photo-op.

I know I never gave it much thought until I saw a little article about them in the Marthas’ Vineyard Magazine a couple of years ago. These four rusted anchors belong to the Norton family who owned a home across the street. But why are they there?

According to the article in MV Magazine:

“in the 1930′s coastal schooners would sometimes lose their anchors to accidents or storms… town fisherman would also occasionally snag and damage their nets on them. Whenever possible, the fishermen raised the offending anchor and brought it ashore. “

“Samuel Norton collected these anchors and sold or gave them to summer people who put them on their lawns or near their boathouses as ornaments.”

I guess now when I walk past them I’ll think about where they came from and about how many people have taken pictures by them over the years.

Meeting A Vineyard Celebrity …

In size the biggest Vineyard celebrity would have to be Clifford the Big Red Dog.  No one, either two or four-legged comes close to him in stature… or in popularity with the younger set.

100_6468100_6471

In 1996 as time was approaching for my granddaughter’s (then age 7) and grandson’s (then age 3) first trip to Martha’s Vineyard I wanted to do something special for them. I know, just going to MV is special enough, but I wanted something different that would be impressive.

I knew that Norman Bridwell, the creator of Clifford, lived on MV so I decided to send him a letter telling him about my long time connection with MV and how my grandchildren would be making their first trip there in a few months.

100_6469 Lo and behold a few weeks later I got a letter from him saying he’d be delighted to meet us. He told me what date would be good for him and gave me his phone number… to me, a complete stranger.

I told my daughter Patty what I had done and she and I decided to keep it as a surprise for the children. That was very hard for me.

When I arrived on MV a few days before my family there was a message waiting for me where I was staying… it was from Norman Bridwell making sure I’d gotten to MV safely and that our get together was still on. On top of that he also phoned me. How nice was that.

The second day of their trip to MV we went for a walk in Edgartown. While walking down a particular street I said to my granddaughter Tiffany “that’s the house where the man who draws Clifford the Big Red Dog lives.” Her face lit up and she smiled. Grandson Tyler was interested in collecting leaves at that point. I said to Tiffany, “why don’t you go ring the doorbell and see what happens?” She looked at me like I’d lost my mind, then glanced at her mom who agreed that we should give it a shot. So up to the door we went. Ringgggg….ringgggg. The door opened and there stood Norma Bridwell, “hello there, come right in, I’ll get Norman for you.” Tiffany stood wide-eyed at the door and then inched her way in. Tyler discovered they had a cat and scurried in to play with it.

100_6470

Norman Bridwell stepped out of his office, greeted us and asked us into the living room. He’s a delightful man, full of interesting stories and he made us all feel quite at home. Since my daughter Patty and I knew we were going to be visiting the Bridwell’s she came bearing Clifford cookies and two Clifford books for him to sign for Tiffany and Tyler. I often wondered if they were suspicious of the cookie thing … like how did their mom just happen to have Clifford cookies at the ready !

It was a memorable morning, I’m so glad I took the chance and wrote that letter. :)
