Wet Weekend Inside

The leaves seemed to have gone wild and vibrant overnight, and I’d like nothing more than a weekend being productive outside in that beautiful blaze of color.  Alas, it’s super rainy and gross out, so we’ll be spending the weekend inside.

Which is soooo much more than okay, because I have a few new toys to play with. Chief among which, is this:

That, my friends, is a beautiful Ashford Kiwi spinning wheel. I am beyond lucky and spoiled to have some incredibly wonderful friends, because this was given to me by my friend Kris, who is downsizing in preparation for a move.   I’ve been spending a lot of time playing with my drop spindle, trying to get the hang of proper drafting.   It’s paid off in the sense that I knew the mechanics of working with a wheel and how twist works, etc.  Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m any good at it.  I’m still working on getting the knack of making yarn that is uniform and not too thin, too thick, or weirdly bumpy.  Fortunately there are many, many excellent tutorials on the internet and I have a whole rainy weekend in front of me to work on it.

Neve is trying to get the hang of the drop spindle now.

Of course we have plenty of “help” from the cutest kitten in the world.

I’ve got some yarn dyeing to finish up, but I am happy for it to rain, rain, and rain some more, because a lot of my weekend will hopefully look like this:

Knitting Daily! and other news

Monday I’m flying to Cleveland to be taped for a couple episodes of Knitting Daily!  I don’t know what episode numbers yet (it’ll be series 1400, however), or when they’ll air, but I’ll keep you posted.  You can check out the Knitting Daily site here to see what station in your area broadcasts it.

I’ll try to get some pics while on the set & let you know about the whole process.

Since The Wild West Collection I’ve been working on a variety of patterns.  I’m planning on doing the photoshoot today (since I’m getting my hair and nails done this morning).  I’m thinking we’ll be heading down to the beach. Right now there’s a lot of marine layer (overcast); it may (most likely) burn off by late morning.  I’d rather it be a little overcast, but, you work with what you have.

Look for a shawlette in Elemental Affects first, then a couple hats (Anzula, Bijou Basin) and a cowl (Stitch Sprouts). Below is a sneak peek at Cherty, the shawlette.  If you’d like sneak peeks / informal pics of any of the others, or to see other folk’s versions, head over to the Ravelry group and looks at some of the recent test knits.

What’s your favorite genre that other people might not read? I mean, mysteries, romances, real-crime … these are all fairly widespread categories. But real readers don’t usually limit themselves to just the “big” genres … so what’s your favorite little-known type of book? Books on dogs? Knitting books? Stories about the space race? Mathematical theory?

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

Arising from the Dead

I have been AWOL for the last couple of months, which I guess makes this a zombie post? Life had been crazy busy with work and family obligations, a couple of health issues and one big project that I will write about next week. But mostly I’ve been trying to slow down a bit and enjoy the lovely fall we are having.

It has always been my habit to jam pack every single day from the moment I get out of bed until it’s time to return. My To Do lists are epic and, most of the time at least slightly aspirational, as no mere human could possibly accomplish all the tasks I set for myself on a given day. I’ve lived that way for as long as I can remember but things have changed in my life in the past year or so and I am enjoying the slower pace that comes along with having other people in my life.

Last year, I was lucky enough to meet the love of my life.

He is kind, funny, smart, loyal and devastatingly handsome.

Because I am me, it took me a very long time to believe that this amazing man was interested in me, but over time, I realized that we were pretty amazing together.

Last week, on the anniversary of the day we met, in the exact spot where we met, Mike asked me to marry him. It was the singularly most romantic moment of my life.

Getting engaged quite unexpectedly renewed my urge to write something for this blog  because I was so anxious to share this amazing moment with all of you, who have been with me through the struggles and joys of the last seven years.

So this blog will be returning from the dead. Maybe not with the manic zeal of the old old days, but with a renew dedication to sharing the things that matter with each other.

There are good days ahead, my friends.

I was interviewed last month for a Hispanic Heritage Month by Marie Segares, the crochet & knitting blogger and designer.  She blogs at the Underground Crafter and is also the host of the podcast the "Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show".  If you'd like to read her interview of me for her Hispanic Heritage series that happened in September, you can read it here (http://undergroundcrafter.com/blog/2014/09/18/interview-with-adriana-hernandez-hispanic-heritage-month-series/)

And, for the podcast, she asked me some great questions about how I got into the business of making fonts for knit and crochet. So, if you're interested in listening to the podcast interview you can find it here (http://creativeyarnentrepreneur.com/episode-8-affordable-crochet-and-knitting-fonts-with-adriana-hernandez/) or below.

Thanks for asking me to participate, Marie!

And, if you'd like to see the fonts, you can find them here.
