Christmas in July

Post image for Christmas in July

Open Road Media is having a special summer sale on ebooks until July 22nd. So here’s your chance to get a head-start on your cold-weather knitting with some summer-priced inspiration!

These include some really wonderful books, like Melanie Falick’s Weekend Knitting and her fabulous Handknit Holidays. Veronik Avery’s Knitting Classic Style and her Knitting 24/7, and more knitting books.

The 150 titles include lots of different categories, too. (And, yes, it’s entirely possible I bought a few Erma Bombeck books for the next time I need a good laugh.) Go check them out!

It’s summer now

finally a pleasant evening

Well then. We've had quite the hot  and humid spell lately. I can't say anything nice about it, so I will just say, "The plants seem happy!"

garden explosion!

oh smokebush, I love you so much

ranunculus not looking so hot

porcupine grass!

black eyed susan

white echinacea

clematis, but really just still so happy about that roof

nishiki willow

yarrow

more wild morning slory

still obsessed with the smokebush

oregano blossoms

wild morning glory

monarda at sunset

sunflower

noah's lightning bug friend

under the tree :)

oops, pumpkins are taking over

grow!

So for the foreseeable future, I'll be hiding from the heat and knitting. My current project is being shared in a series of guest posts over on the Juniper Moon Farm blog. So far, just the first one is up, but I'll update here as they're posted. Now fingers crossed that my sweater turns out okay! Because if it doesn't, everybody will see my shame.

Fit Bit Flex

I am madly in love with the Fitbit Flex Wireless Activity + Sleep Wristband
I got for my birthday! As the name suggests, it measures your activity throughout the day, keeps track of your calories and measures your sleep.

The cool thing about the fitbit is you can sync it to your smart phone and check throughout the day to see how close you are to meeting your goals. My current goal is 10,000 steps/5 miles per day, and I can’t tell you how motivating it is to see the steps adding up. I will often take an evening walk if I’m falling short of my goal, something that would never have occurred to me without having the data.

The sleep function is pretty cool too. It measures the quality of your sleep and notes how many times you were restless or woke up.

The Fitbit also syncs to a dashboard on the Fitbit website that lets you input a lot of other info that you may want to keep track of. I haven’t used those features because the thing that really appeals to me about the device is that it’s an entirely passive and you don’t have to do a lot of manual entering of info.

My main concern when I got my Fitbit Flex was that I was going to hate wearing it. I’m not really a jewelry person and I thought it would bother me having something on my wrist all the time. Luckily it’s really light and I got used to it really quickly. And if you don’t like black, there’s is an Accessory Pack with three colored wrist bands that you can swap out.

If you’re looking for a little motivation for your workout routine, I highly recommend the Fitbit Flex .

Movie Minute: Before Midnight

BefMidposterI loved Richard Linklater's third Jesse & Celine film, Before Midnight. Yes, I also loved Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004). The films stand on their own and cohere as a beautiful trilogy visiting a couple's relationship as it evolves and endures over two decades. The two actors (Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy, who share screenwriting credit with Linklater) are certainly attractive in each film, aging appropriately (and hardly old in their early 40s!), and the setting of this last, a Greek island, in addition to its beauty, offers metaphoric touchstones with its ancient ruins and its remove from either character's origins. These are all "talky" films, but Before Midnight's conversation engages the viewer and compels further thought post-screening. Although not a part of such a couple, I could relate to their perspectives as a human only about a decade older, and as one in relationship with friends for as long, and with my brother for even longer. The film elicited chuckles of recognition, for sure – and a surprising amount of silent talking back to Celine, aligning with my countryman rather than my gender-mate.

When I saw Before Sunrise, did I imagine these two reuniting? Probably, romantic that I'd have been. When they parted at Before Sunset's end, did I see them making a life together? Possibly; I can't recall, but I was glad for their having shared one more day. Do I want to see a fourth film? I don't think so, but I will if they make one. For now, I'm content to believe Jesse & Celine will raise their girls in one country or another, do good work in the world, and grow old together.

My Vineyard Pillow …

My daughter Patty surprised me last week with this beautiful Vineyard pillow she made for me.

More Scotland in Pictures

I am back from the U.K.! Kris and I had an incredible time. I fell completely in love with Edinburgh– the weather, the architecture, the history. It truly is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. I will definitely be going back some day.

As expected, I am now in full panic mode because I got so behind on all my work while I was away, and there is a mountain of things I must get through by the end of the week.

While I run around like I’m on fire, enjoy these pictures!

We rented a lovely little flat in New Town for a week. It was really perfect and very affordable. If you’re going to Scotland, let me know and I’ll send you the details.

There are so many beautiful historic buildings here that it’s nearly impossible to take a bad picture.

The weather was positively glorious while we were there. They were in the middle of a “heatwave”; the high got all the way up to 73 one day.

IMG_4225

We didn’t have one disappointing meal the entire time we were there.

We went to a private whisky club and sampled some really fancy whisky, which was pretty much wasted on us.

IMG_4218

We both tried the haggis. It wasn’t bad, but definitely was not my favorite.IMG_4106

The best yogurt I’ve ever eaten.

IMG_4231

Best sandwich I’ve ever eaten. (I sort of famously don’t like sandwiches, but this was exceptional.) Brie, tomato jam and rocket.

Preston Field House

We had afternoon tea at Preston Field House, a very swanky hotel.

The tea was nice, but we were really there to see the Highland cows they keep on the property.

This is Harold.

IMG_4278

I have always wanted Highland cows and Harold didn’t change my mind.

We spent two days at the National Museum of Scotland. It’s magnificent and free!

They have far and away the best textiles collection I’ve ever seen.

This is a fulling machine ( like the one Jack builds in World Without End).

I love this photograph of a woman knitting while gathering peat.

IMG_4198

We saw lots of men in kilts. I think I mentioned in an early post that it was graduation week in Edinburgh, so there were lots of young graduates in kilts being taken out to lunch by proud parents.IMG_4197

IMG_4205

I was really knocked out by these kilts! These guys are the bellmen at the Hotel Missoni.

On our last full day in Edinburgh we walked  ten miles! And I have proof!

I have at least one more post worth of pictures, unless y’all have been bored to death already.

Random Rainbow

I woke up to my laundry line in the light, and I realized I had hung the clothes in a kind of rainbow color-order!

You never know where you'll find a rainbow...

Have a great week, everyone!  I'm trying to keep my head above water with the work on my plate, but hopefully soon I'll be able to share some new projects with you all.

Dogs and Pets

btt button

My dog just had his birthday (12 years old, thanks), so … how do you feel about books about dogs or pets? Fluffy stories of fluffy family members? Solid books on training them or taking care of them? Touching reminiscences of trouble and the way a person’s dog (or pet) has helped get them through?

(Mind you, almost all the pet-related books on my shelf are about dogs, but I’m well aware that people love their cats, horses, ferrets, rabbits, fish, etc. just as much, so … any species is fine!)

Any favorite books to recommend?
