KS: History on Two Needles

The In-Depth Look:

The author begins by saying, “For years I dreamed about a collection of designs based on iconic works from art history, blending several of my great loves (knitting, history, and art) into one set of finished patterns that anyone could knit and wear. I wanted to create garments inspired by historic images, without becoming historic costumes. My love of historic garment silhouette, detail, and the lessons these teach us about political changes in the world is something I like to bring to my hand-knit designs whenever possible.”

Well, this collection of patterns is a delight. Clever reconstructions pulled straight out of historical images ranging from Ancient Egypt and Greece straight through the Victorian age, with an emphasis on Northern Europe. As Ms. Modesitt says, “I’ve traveled more extensively in the UK and Ireland than in other countries – the only language in which I’m fluent is English. This has led to a strong British bias in my choice of original artwork to use as inspiration, which is especially noticable in the Renaissance section (a re!ection of my own personal love of the Tudor period of history).”

It’s true that some of these designs are more successful at looking “inspired by” history without looking like costumes, but there are some really lovely designs in here (like the Pembroke Jacket, which I fell in love with). The photos are a combination of modeled knitwear photoshopped against historically-accurate backdrops which gives the images a lush feel.

Except for some accessories that could go either way, all the designs are for women, and most are in the clothing category, rather than accessories, though there are some nice wraps and headwear (like the Black Prince Hood of knitted chainmail or the knitted-architectural brillians of the Sutton Hoo Helm).

Along the way, you get little bits of history to go with the designs and nice, atmospheric photos to set the mood. Each design comes with thorough schematics (I would expect nothing else from Annie Modesitt, honestly), and an impressive attention to detail.

And, darn it, it was fun.

On Hold

This week normal life has been on hold while the girls are at theater camp preparing to perform in The Princess And The Pea.  It’s a week – long camp hosted by Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater in conjunction with Missoula Children’s Theater.

Children audition for their parts on Monday (everyone who is registered gets a part), rehearse all week, and present the play on Saturday.

Since the theater is a bit of a drive and Oona’s schedule is a bit shorter than the older girls I have been in town pretty much all week and away from home.  It’s been stressful, crazy, fun and a total whirlwind.  We can’t believe that the performance is tomorrow already!

In the meantime the gardens and the house have been completely neglected.

The sheep and goats have of course not been!  In fact I had a hectic day meeting the vet back here to administer copper boluses to everyone for parasite control and then screaming back into town to pick up the kids.  The same amount of work is still going into livestock care; the hours have just shifted a bit.  Still, it will be a nice return to normal after Saturday!

Oona named the surprise new chick “Dorito”.

And now I am back off into the whirlwind.  We’ll be celebrating the Solstice on Sunday, and we can’t wait.

A glimpse of Lisa’s House

Susie and I had a great time staying at Lisa’s house in Pennsylvania. It should have only been about a half hour out of our way, but unfortunately NY traffic meant that we arrived 2 hours later than planned! But once we got here, Lisa’s was a little slice of paradise.

Lisa’s house is a converted school. When Susie was telling me about it, I imagined a one-room schoolhouse kind of thing, so I was absolutely floored when pulled up the driveway.

We had a great evening with a lovely tour of the house – both the stunning renovated section, as well as the in-progress funky still-kind-of-a-school section.

We met her three adorable cats – Ernie, Bert, and Luna.

Lisa’s craft room is absolutely amazing and filled with all kinds of treasures.

We had a great dinner of chicken, roasted veggies, bread, cheese and olives.

I will be telling you about our Jomar adventure another time, since it was such an adventure! When we came back, Lisa, her husband, her son, Susie and I had a fire pit and we made s’mores and noshed on strawberries with amazing brown sugar whipped cream! (I think those photos are in the memory card in the car. ugh!)

But in the morning, we took a few more photos for the photo shoot and then it was time to go.

Susie and I already miss Lisa and her amazing house, even though we’re so thrilled to be at our hotel room in Ohio!

Drive By Update

1. I just did an impromptu giveaway on facebook. It was quick and fun, and I will definitely do it again. Winners will be announced tomorrow, and everyone that participated will get a 10% off coupon for the shop.

2. It has been a long and stressful few weeks as Brock tries to find a job. I am trying to hold it together, but just keep researching magic instead of working on Tiny Dino Studios, because one day I will actually write a young adult fantasy novel.

3. The first issue of ply magazine debuted and it is gorgeous. The first article on the first spinners made me want to go back to school and do the Textiles BFA at KU with a minor in History. Someday, I will do this.

4. Since Brock is unemployed, but brilliant, he is making a video game. I might be fantasizing about it having Minecraft-type success and becoming a full-time student/mom who couldn’t give a damn about money. In these fantasies, I am also, thinner, taller, blonde, and wearing a baby on my back as I work on the looms in the art building and walk around campus.

5. Despite the above despairing, I have been dyeing, and I have updated my shop accordingly.

6. I have also been spinning some really dreamy alpaca, pictured below. I don’t even hesitate to link you to Marcia’s shop because her stuff is so brilliant. (Most alpaca breeders go for density and then fineness. Marcia just breeds for fineness, and let me tell you what I am spinning is like buttah.)

And here’s what just went up for sale in my shop, if you can pull yourself away from the Alpaca.

Nightmare Cast

btt button

And, the reverse–which actors have been particularly badly cast in roles of characters you first met in the pages of a book? Do you blame the actors or the writers and other film-people for the failure? Who would you have cast instead?

Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

Hitting the Road

The photo shoot is wrapped up (kind of) and our saintly hosts’ house is emptied (mostly), so it’s time for Susie and I to hit the road! We’re on our way to TNNA – The National Needlearts Association – trade show in Columbus, Ohio.

When I went to bed at 2a last night, I knew that there were several things I still needed to pack and my suitcase is filled to the brim right now. We’re going to have to see who wins, me or the suitcase!

When we stop for the night, I’ll update you with anything crazy we see on the road.

In the meantime, here are a couple of behind the scenes shots from the photo shoot:
