Diamond In The Sand …

101_3623

101_3622

This is the beach in Oak Bluffs, this is where we always went when I was growing up. I remember one time in particular when I was there with my parents when I was about three or four years old.

101_2849

After playing in the water with my dad and digging in the sand with my mom we started gathering up our blanket and things to leave. All of a sudden my mother gasped and yelled for my father… “my diamond ring is gone” she said in alarm. My dad immediately took charge of the situation by telling me NOT to move, just stay put.  I quickly rushed over to the people nearby and told them my mother had just lost her ring in the sand and my father was going to find it. So much for listening. They, along with other beach goers who had heard me, started to get up to help my father look for the ring. “No” he said.. “don’t walk on the sand, if the sand is disturbed any further the ring will sink lower, I think I might have only one chance to find it.” We all held our breaths as he surveyed the situation and then after what seemed like an eternity (especially to me who was staying still) he scooped up a handful of sand. Miraculously there, shining out from the sand was my mothers diamond engagement ring.

I’m still amazed that he found it, how did he know where to look, how had my running through the sand not made it sink lower. I’m sure that ring was being watched over somehow.

Ramble, ramble. It’s what I do.

pie time!

Thought I was getting caught up here, but then my annual summer misery kicked in and I was forced into air conditioned hiding by so many 90º days.

Before the heat settled in, there was pie,

delicious, fresh strawberries

... which you don't get to see. It was ugly pie, but very delicious. I am not a gifted dessert maker, that is for sure. I can make all sorts of tasty things, but they all come out looking bedraggled if not extremely disadvantaged in some way. I am just not a big one on the fine details when it comes to something we will be immediately consuming. Or that is what I tell myself so I don't feel so bad when I fail again and again.

In not-ugly land, I made this Matilda cardigan for a friend's baby and just loved how it turned out.

Matilda cardigan

I'm making the same for Lydia in a different yarn and I just started binding off the bottom edge. I'm not positive I have enough yarn for the sleeves and the edging, so some fudging may occur. We'll see.

In other small thing cuteness, I ordered a Miss Maggie Rabbit kit from Alicia Paulson's shop somewhere around Lydia's birthday.

 BunnyBunnyBunny

just starting out

getting there!

I'm glad you like your legs, Miss Maggie, but now it's time for bed

Miss Maggie has taken up knitting!

Lydia finally likes her bunny

I still haven't gotten around to the little boots yet, but I'll do them one of these days. And I have plans for a tiny apron too.

Miss Maggie's playing the banjo now

I noticed today that the marigold Ethan sprouted at school for Mother's Day is now taking over the windowsill, and that the candle jars really ought to be cleaned and put away for the summer, and that there is a giant goose feather I keep meaning to clean. Ah well. I can still sort of see the yard from there.

my Mother's Day plant from Ethan is taking over the windowsill

But anyway, look how hot is is. These are from today, and I'm sure one look at these pictures and you can feel me out there dying among my unhappy plants.

sad, limp raspberries

Sad.

not so exquisite looking blackberries

terrible, terrible blueberries

I looked at my one blueberry and was amazed to see BLUE berries on it, untouched by the birds! I wondered why they hadn't eaten all of these yet and popped one in my mouth and realized it's because birds are smart and these berries are total crap. Bitter, tiny, horrible little things with tough, extra bitter skin. But I had a chuckle, and I'm sure I'll be the subject of many little birds' dinner conversations tonight.

Wondering why the birds hadn't touched them, so I ate one. Yeah, they're crap.

But back to whatever I was working my way around to.

finally got one fenced

I finally got the gardens planted on the 22nd (I know, I know, but I moved them late and all that), and just last night finished some "fencing" for one of them. Tonight I'll finish the other if all goes well. I have a trellis project starting to go between them, so that'll be a thing soon.

Here's the layout,

late start

and I have leftovers of several of them for a fall planting, plus a few unopened ones tucked away.

a few for a fall planting

I ordered everything from High Mowing Seeds because what I've used from them in the past has just out-performed everything else in the garden. I even had some mixed lettuces that I let go to seed and *ahem* never got around to collecting them, so they planted themselves, survived the winter and three different diggings/dirt transfers, and STILL sprouted in the spring and gave me many salads worth of delicious mixed greens. They always say Vermonters are tough, and I guess that goes for their seeds too. ;)

But did I mention how hot it is?

Not, in fact, my giant head, but rather my new gardening hat.

Believe it or not, that perfect circle at the top of my shadow is not my huge alien bubble head. It is my first official gardening hat, and it is lovely (and under $15, win!)

new hat!

And with that, I will finally put the brakes on my unexpected burst of energy today. Expect too many garden pictures soon!

Celebrating Summer

We welcomed summer and the Solstice a few days late this year, but it was no less sun – drenched and magical.

Tell me something good Tuesday!

Tell Something GoodTuesdays

I know Tuesday is nearly over, but I over-slept, and then got crazy busy. Sorry about that.

So, I’ve gotten a whole lot of good news today, and, sadly, none of it is anything I can share just yet. Suffice to say that I am afraid to pick up the phone for the rest of the day, because if any more amazing things happen to me in the next 24 hours, my head might explode.

But that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to hear your something good. So go ahead, y’all! Tell me something good!

Recipe: Bacon Apple Pancakes

This one started out as an experiment, and it's results were delicious...

Ingredients
Whole-Grain Pancake base...
1 C Whole Wheat flour
1/3 C cornmeal
1/4 C All-Purpose flour
3 tbsp brown sugar (half for apples/ half for batter)
4 tbsp sugar (half for apples/ half for batter)
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2 eggs
1/4 C vegetable oil
1 1/2 C milk
--
2 fave apples (peeled, cored, sliced thin or chopped)
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp vanilla extract (or vanilla sugar)
1 /2 tsp cinnamon
1/8  tsp cloves
(see sugar above)
--
pack of bacon (in strips)

Instructions
Toss chopped apples with lemon juice, brown and regular sugar (leave half for batter), vanilla, cinnamon, cloves.  Set aside.

In a separate container, combine dry ingredients for pancake batter: whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, cornmeal, sugars (leftovers from apple toss), baking powder, and salt.  Combine the wet ingredients (2 eggs, vegetable oil and milk) and add to the dry ingredients.  Let sit for about 5 minutes so everything is really absorbed, then stir in the apple mixture.

The griddle... make sure it's hot, and place your bacon strips alongside each other and cook until crisp on one side.  Turn over bacon strips (interlace or basket weave if you like).  Then pour a 1/3 cup of batter (with apples) onto the bacon.  When the batter starts bubbling on the outer 2" edges and looks dry, flip with bacon.

Cook for another few minutes until the pancake is easily shifted.  Transfer to plate and repeat (or eat!).  Serve with maple syrup or butter or powdered sugar if desired.

Makes a great brunch or dinner!  Each pancake is really filling.  Makes about 8 pancakes, about 8" in diameter.

Jomar

I’m waiting for my very delayed flight home from TNNA and thought that I’d take what little brain power I had left to update you on one of the things that Susan and I experienced while away.

Jomar020

If you’ve never been to or heard of Jomar, it’s… well… it’s very hard to describe. Kind of like TJ Maxx or Building 19 or That $1.99 fabric place (Where everything is $1.99 a yard!)… but if they were all rolled up into one and then scattered in Philly.

It’s about half fabrics and notions and the other half bizarre clothing and home goods – all sold at low low prices because they didn’t sell in normal stores, or the package was damaged. Last time Susan was here, she got a white noise machine for 50 cents because the box was lost and they had no idea what it was. They taped a vacuum cleaner attachment onto it, thinking it went together! The best way to describe this stores is to show you, and even then, I can’t possibly capture the experience.

Jomar021 Jomar024 Jomar025 Jomar036 Jomar038 Jomar002 Jomar004 Jomar032 Jomar029

We couldn’t figure out what this is. Any ideas? It was in the fabric and notions part of the store (but who knows if that’s accurate!)

Jomar033

We had some treasures in the clothing/”fashion”/home goods part of the store…

Everything’s better with a bird on it?

Jomar007

I always decorate with arrows. It shows how inviting my house is.

Jomar006

Two-eyed, one-horned sad mounted goat head?

Jomar015

I looked for the most ugly shoes I could find. I was disappointed that nothing topped the first pair I was drawn to!

Jomar016 Jomar019 Jomar018

Jomar’s rules.

Jomar013

I found this automatic watch winder.

Jomar009 Jomar010 Jomar011

The Quick start guide was not helpful. Best bet (Susan’s), is that you use it to wind the watches that are wound by movement. Any other ideas?

There will be lots more about the photo shoot and TNNA soon, but Susan and I are both exhausted and will also be trying to give ourselves a bit of time to recover as well as finish readying the patterns for Fall/Winter.

My plane is getting ready to board (a half hour after we were supposed to touch down at home! ugh!), so I’m going to shut down.

The Princess and The Pea!

marquee

Last week was a flurry of excited preparation and nightly exhaustion.  I don’t think Oona has ever slept so well!

On Monday the girls were assigned their parts in the play – a re-working of The Princess and the Pea.  They then had until Saturday to learn their parts and perform it.

Maddie was cast as the Princess.  Emily was cast as a phony princess vying for the prince’s attention.  Neve was a wind-maker from the prince’s wintry kingdom, and Oona was a dust bunny from under the princess’ bed.

06.24.13a

We knew at least two other families’ worth of kids taking part, so it was a fun mix of old and new friends.

06.24.13b

06.24.13c

Maddie as the Princess, with her buddy – the pea.

06.24.13d

06.24.13e

This is what happens when they ask my kid to make a funny face.

06.24.13f

Oona, and our friend’s daughter Laura, front left.

06.24.13g

There’s Emily on the top left in the funny flower pot hat.

06.24.13h

Paul’s parents came down from New York and we spent the day in town going to both performances.

It was a wonderful, magical experience for the kids and we are thrilled they were able to take part.  We are sure to do it again next year!

Martha Stewart Living!

Look, look! Susie’s in Martha Stewart Living!

MSL

We’ve been keeping it under our hats since they visited the farm in April and it’s been mighty difficult. We heard that it hit the newsstands, but despite trying to find it from Massachusetts to Ohio, we haven’t seen it in person yet. These images were taken by Amy. Thanks, Amy! You’re a peach!

We hope you’ll check it out!
