After the Rain

Severe weather pounded through north Texas this afternoon, leaving a wake of destruction in many parts of town, and terrorizing thousands of people.  We, by God's grace, were spared.  No hail, no high winds, no damage.  Just a heavy, soaking rain.

And then it blew away.  It left behind some gorgeous cool breezes, bird song, and saturated colors.  Here is my evening, in pictures...

I add my prayers to many others on behalf of the people who lost electricity, possessions and property in today's storms.

Today in Pictures

We had some dramatic weather yesterday, which almost always leads to some dramatic sunsets.  Like the one tonight...

Our very rare two-headed lamb was spotted in the north paddock this evening as I made my rounds.

All the sheep, including Crazy Phoebe, insisted on confronting the shepherd head-on tonight.  And she looks kind of put out about something.  There's no telling what goes on in that little sheepy brain.

It's been a while since our big ol' hoot owl hung out where I could see him.  I had to push the limits of my camera's lens, because he's a little shy and won't let me get close at all.

In fact, I barely got the camera to focus on the giant bird before he was going...

Going...

Gone.

Earlier today we were paid a visit by another very large bird - a blue heron - who came to fish in our swollen creek.

Swollen and rushing past.  Though it overflowed its bounds, it never got up to the point that I was concerned.  The chorus frogs came out to sing, and added to the warm spring sound of the moving water.

I tried to catch this male Cardinal who was sitting on a branch outside my office window.
Arg.  Timing is everything.

The End of a Precious Day

I'm not sure what it was about today that was so satisfying...

One of my favorite kinds of days - the kind where I don't have to leave the property for anything.  The knitting class was a little more informal today, so we got to share more about our lives.  Outside, the air was warm and humid, and the breeze picked up over the course of the afternoon.  It felt more like April than February.  We hit that sweet spot on the thermometer - not too cool and not too warm.  Really blissful.

I lingered over my chores because it was so nice just to be in the earthy air, studying the sheeps' eyelashes, burying my nose in Vanni's soft ruff, examining the young turnips, sorting luxurious fiber.

Inside, I took time to check in with community members on-line a bit.  These days we're all wrestling with issues political, spiritual, familial, medical, mechanical, interpersonal...  That takes energy.  I got to visit with a friend on a day she got some of the most joyous news of her life--what an honor.  That will add some richness to your afternoon, let me tell you.

And now the sun is down and the animals have settled into their nighttime routines -- the dogs to their stations, the sheep bedding down together, the alpacas dotting the pasture like sculptured topiary.  Springtime is the busiest time of the year on a farm, so these pensive, slo-mo days are gifts to be treasured.
