Sunny Days

We have been so busy these last few days enjoying the sun!  Everyone was rejoicing when it finally returned; the animals were kicking up their heels to play and stretching out in the hay to dry off and soak up the warm.

Though today it has gotten much, much colder and more windy, we are still thankful for it to be dry.  Even the indoor animals are spending their days moving from sun spot to sun spot.

It’s forecast to be even colder the rest of the week.  The hoses are already frozen solid so there will be plenty of water – bucket carrying going on.  The fireplace will be on more or less all the time, and there will be plenty of bread and soup making to get us through.

Stay warm, wherever you are.

Winter Makes Its Debut

I know I am very unpopular when I say how I love snow, but I’ll tell you this: it would be a darn site nicer to have had snow the last few days rather than the rain.  Our field became a mud pit, our bridge is nearly inundated with rushing water.  My boots were sinking in the mud each time I went out to feed (which is a lot, because we’ve been taking wheel – barrow – fulls down at various points during the day).

Then around 3 this afternoon it changed.  First a slushy, icy snow, which only added to the misery.  At this point Emily and I constructed a temporary (and not great) shelter out of the dog kennel and a tarp.  Only the goats are using it.  Sheep actually do just fine in the cold and wet, but I wanted to be able to keep their hay dry and give them an option to get our of the driving rain.  Since then it’s been a rather lovely snow to look at, and I’d have enjoyed being out in it more if not for already being soaked through from the rain.

We had an abbreviated school day today, knowing I would need to spend more time tending to the livestock, and afterwards I made tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches (our standard winter day fare).

01.17.13a

I am fond of the Tomato and Cheddar Soup recipe from this book.  It’s basically onions simmered in butter, half and half tossed in once they are soft and clear and foamy.  Shredded cheddar is added with a little bit of flour and then a can of Fire – Roasted Crushed tomatoes.  Salt, pepper, and alspice to taste.  It’s only slightly more complicated than heating up condensed soup and it goes smashingly with grilled cheese!

Emily was my right hand (or arm, more like) today.  When it comes to the farm, Emily earns her keep.

01.17.13d

Amelia, like all the rest of the animals, looks a little worse for the wear.  They’ve been getting extra grain the last few days to make up for the lack of a large quantity of free – choice hay.  Plus the combustive process of their digestion provides them with body heat.

01.17.13e

See the outer wool dripping?  We’ll ALL be glad to see the sun again.

01.17.13f

The ground looks great, doesn’t it?  This is what it looks like at the gate; why a truck wouldn’t make it through.

01.17.13g

The geese, on the other hand, think this wet weather is the most amazing thing that has ever happened.  They’ve been flapping about, splashing in puddles and having far too much fun.

On tap for tonight is chili for dinner followed by board games and popcorn by the fire.

Bring it, winter.  It’s about time.

Another Not a Post, Post

Susie asked me to post that her computer is being completely rebuilt with a new hard drive by Amy’s husband Paul and in the meantime he has lent her his brand new laptop to edit the recovered pictures on.

In the meantime, here are a couple of pictures from January 2009 (four years ago!) when Susie had just bought some new Ewes since I’ve got nothing new to show you:

Behind The Scenes (Photo Heavy)

This weekend was the photo shoot for Juniper Moon Farm’s Spring and Summer 2013 collection.  A lot of my favorite people were there, and it turned out to be much warmer than the last time we shot spring clothes in the winter!  There were a lot of pictures taken in 3 short days, and though I cannot show you any of the garments, I can give you a peek at what it looked like “back stage”.

01.07.13a

The incredible Lauria, getting Anna ready for a scene.  Lauria kept us not only working on schedule, but kept us looking good while doing it.

01.07.13b

Maddie and Ann getting lunch ready for the crowd.

01.07.13c

Garment prep.

01.07.13d

Tanya kept us well fed and happy in between getting her picture taken.  When Paul showed up one morning to take care of fixing some props, she had a coffee ready and waiting for him, saying ” I heard you were coming so I made coffee”.

She’s pretty awesome like that.

01.07.13e

Lovely Shirra, between scenes.

01.07.13f

01.07.13g

01.07.13h

Cris kept us laughing even when we were exhausted and running out of steam.

01.07.13i

Neve could occasionally be counted on to help.

01.07.13j

Lisa brought her tiny new baby for everyone to snuggle, and looked amazing for her scene.

01.07.13k

Even Paul got in on the baby snuggling.

01.07.13l

Alston and Oona played and watched videos.

01.07.13m

Lucy never failed to be in the way.  Until we needed her.  Such a diva.

01.07.13n

Badminton time!

01.07.13o

Some quick archery safety lessons pre – shoot.

01.07.13p

Waiting.

01.07.13t

01.07.13u

Oona warmed up to Erin in short order and shadowed her the rest of the day.

01.07.13r

Erin looks a bit chilly waiting for her scene.

01.07.13v

Anna and Erin, catching up.

01.07.13q

This picture cracks me up.  Cris and Anna, looking hilariously judgmental in the background.

Now we are all going to sleep for a few days.

Cheers!

Behind the Scenes at the Spring Summer 2013 Photo Shoot

Lauria here again with a behind the scenes look at the photo shoot we just wrapped up this weekend. I’m at my boarding gate for my flight back home. Unfortunately the internet at the farm is still down so I couldn’t share these with you earlier. We’ve all been working very hard to shoot as many of the Spring 2013 garments as possible.

Thursday Shirra and I came down early and spent the day with Susan sewing on buttons, styling garments, and (my favorite) working on spreadsheets!

Friday we shot 16 garments! Our goal was 13 and we worked very fast and even after shooting all 16, we had sunlight to spare, but not any energy! In between garments, we got to chat with friends that came to help and admired a brand new baby.

I spent the entire day in full makeup and alternately in gorgeous outfits and in Susan’s sweats (I took only photoshoot-ready clothes to save room in my luggage). I alternated between readying hair and makeup, setting up locations and props, being on detail patrol for the shoot, modeling, and holding the reflector. And I was one of many alternating!

Poor Emily warmed herself by the fire between shots. It was nippy, but nothing compared to Boston weather, or even last year’s cold!

Lucy (Gnocci’s mom) always wanted to be a part of the show – until the exact moment in which we wanted her to! Then she’d get up and wander off!

Cris took tons of behind the scenes photos herself, as well as some fantastic shots that will end up in the books! (Here she’s modeling her Beaded Cowl, which was designed in Willa and beaded and buttoned from many of the “Aunties” in the JMF Ravelry Group!)

This was an AMAZING weekend and I’m so proud to have been part of it, but it couldn’t have been done without the good friends that came and joined us and worked their butts off! I might just have been a bossy-pants in order to ensure that we would complete the shoot on time (which we did!), but the ladies that followed my lead were sweet, caring, quick and considerate every minute of the long several days. Thank you Amy, Muffin, Cris, Shirra, Tanya, Erin, Maddie, Emily, Erin, Lisa, and of course, Susie. We also couldn’t have done it without Amy’s husband Paul! He was a rockstar and got to be in the books too. And when Susie’s Aunt Ann pitched in, too, we were an unstoppable force!

All these photos are from Susan and we have plenty more to show you! I expect that you’ll get another behind the scenes look with more photos when Susan has some time. Right now she has to get those photos edited so we can get the book to the printer! (Which means that I have to finish up the proofing the patterns project!)

Goodbye, 2012

Before we welcome in 2013, I thought I’d put together a little trip down the 2012 memory lane.  It’s been quite a year.

Enjoy!
