Rainbow { knitting }

boneyard

I just had to share this incredible rainbow yarn my very gifted spinning friend made for me on commission (and the project that stemmed from it). I was inspired by some yarn she had spun before for someone else. Their (multicolored) fiber wouldn't have given them much yardage, so she spun it thinner and plied it with white and I fell in love with it.

After a few brainstorming sessions, she directed me to her favorite dyers and I ended up with this 50/50 Organic Merino/Tussah Silk from Zebisis Designs,

and this undyed Norwegian wool from Woolgatherings. (And yes, that ball is as big as it looks. That is TEN OUNCES of wool!)

Ready for it?

Because thanks to my friend's capable hands, those became this:

After having some trouble choosing a pattern that would really showcase the long color changes and not scatter them or be too busy, my friend and I both gravitated toward Boneyard (by the extremely fabulous Stephen West) so Boneyard it is!

get used to seeing this every day until it's done

As of this morning, I am back into the yellows and already seeing hints of olive coming out of the ball.

back to yellow again

I'll be knitting until I run out of rainbow, then finishing the whole thing with a natural white garter stitch border. Can't wait to get this off the needles!

Susie is stuck under a mountain of snow and it’s raining cold, hard, windy rain here with the threat of snow tomorrow. I’m alternately wanting to snuggle up under the most comfortable of warm clothes, or throw out anything having to do with winter and embrace spring.

Let’s see what I can find that you’ve made on Ravelry to match my mood.

Winter Warmth. Blendab1 knit this Cowboy Cowl out of her Spring 2011 share for her gorgeous daughter.

Blendab1's Cowboy Cowl

Spring for Spring. rebeca4a knit All the Stops (designed by Caroline Fryar for the Spring 2012 collection) in Findley Dappled’s Woodland to wear on her cruise. She modified it for a more conservative neckline and skipped the belt.

rebeca4a's All the Stops

Cozy Comfort. chelseabug knit a Hattie dress (also designed by Caroline Fryar for the Fall 2012 collection) in Herriot. I would love to be wrapped in a dress like this with some wool tights.

chelseabug's Hattie

Warm-Weather Wear. SupaSteph knit a supa-awesome Leaves of Spring shawl out of Findley in Dove. Just right as a spring layering piece, though if I started right now I don’t know that I’d be done before fall!

Head Heater. jbritton79 knit this Thorpe out of Marlowe in Madrigal. A lovely pop of purple color to know that spring will someday be here.

Cool Cap. This is the first Moonshine project in the wild! Knipper knit this Ola hat (which received a lot of attention on Rav for its racy pattern page photo!) out of the brand new yarn, Moonshine in Charcoal and Swimming Pool.

Kipper's Ola

Here’s something a little bit in between. Tamrisk knit up Driftwood, which has been in my favorites for awhile since it features a relatively unknown shoulder/sleeve construction called Contiguous. It’s gaining in popularity and just became an attribute tag on Ravelry. (In fact, the All the Stops dress pictures above uses it!) It’s a top down method in which you knit the sleeve cap and body at the same time. Anyway, Tamrisk did her Driftwood in one color of Sabine – Sirius. (Did I mention that it’s free?) The pink buttons are a fun addition!

What do you like to knit on these stormy days?

Julie’s Hat

Sometimes I need a project that doesn’t require any thinking. Right now that project is the Lorne’s Hat pattern which requires 11 inches of 2×2 ribbing before decreasing for the crown. My ears are always cold and never quite covered by my hat so this time I am going to be VERY sure it’s long enough. I’m knitting this with the bison yarn I bought at Rhinebeck last fall. It should be exceptionally warm.

No One is Perfect

I often forget that things cannot be as "perfect" as you want them to be, something which causes a lot of stress if I let it.  Today, after finding my son building a fort with the blocking mat pieces I brought home from the shop, in a moment of weakness, I pulled myself into my bedroom and cried for 5 minutes.

When my husband noticed I had disappeared, he asked, "What's going on?"  I explained that I didn't want cat hair all over blocking mats, which led to him saying that the cats had already had a field day rubbing their faces all over them.  As he talked, I realized, that wasn't the only thing that was bothering me.  So, of course, tears welled up in my eyes again.

"Ok, now what?" my husband asks.

"That's not the only thing bothering me," I say.

"What else is it?"  To which I respond with the next thing that happens across my brain - I am a bit overwhelmed with Vincent being so ornery lately.  And Mr. Fix-It responds with, "Well, I gave you a list of day cares and pre-schools, why don't you call and set something up for Vincent?"

I shook my head, knowing that tomorrow I'll feel differently, because I just cannot seem to give up my little peanut.  And then, another wave of tears hits me.  "Did you just save a pile of issues to deal with?" my husband asks.  I shook my head.

"Next thing?"

"Nothing," I say.  "Same s**t, different day."

"You want another baby, don't you?"  and I sheepishly shook my head.  He smiled, rubbed my back, and made a promise to me - it won't happen right now, but, he'd agree that another one can come along.  Something we haven't been able to agree on for a LONG time.

The moral of the story is...no one is perfect.

In spite of my fear of losing another battle with anxiety, the anxiety still gets the best of me from time to time.  Right now, I choose to think of it as: I've been working very hard for the past several months, all hoping to find that perfect, happy place.

Perhaps it's not perfection that I seek, not happiness, but satisfaction.  Satisfaction that my time has been well-spent.  That my son is comfortable and content (he'd be happy living in a cardboard box, as long as it was warm and had mommy and daddy by his side...let's face it, kids are pretty easily amused at age 3).  That my shop continues to grow.

What have I done so far this year:
  • Helped proof a pattern book
  • Released a 2-pattern e-book
  • Gone on vacation
  • Knit 5 projects from beginning to end
  • Finished another project in hibernation
  • Worked on a few designs
  • Hosted my best friend's bridal shower
  • Was Maid of Honor in my best friend's wedding
And the usual day to day stuff...I'm exhausted just thinking about it.  Oh well, at least everyone had a good time and things turned out great!

Yes, I'm more than happy to add a newborn into the mix if and when the time comes, but for now, I'm working on being content with my work and staying healthy for all the things I have in front of me.  I'll even continue to shower Peanut with hugs and kisses every day while we enjoy our daily dance party in the shop (it's a great way to start the day or break up the monotony of a slow day).  :)

Yarned by You: Herriot Gallery

Looking through projects on Ravelry made with Juniper Moon Farm, I was drawn to the Herriot projects. Maybe it’s because I was cold all day today, or maybe my mind is just fixated on the Berzelius Crochet Along starting March 1st, but I just want to snuggle up in some accessories made with warm alpaca yarn!

vehuddle knit this Coriander Hat in River Birch. I love the traveling stockinette stitches!

This Pressed Rib Muffler was knit by magilson in Travertine and with the ends in Granite. All that ribbing looks very warm!

Walnut and Ghost Fern were used to knit this #08 Fair Isle Hat. I definitely admire Musicknitter’s colorwork skills!

The undulating waves of Livviknit’s Lamar Scarf (knit in Travertine) remind me of a pretty basket!

jnelson modified Westward to be an earwarmer (seen still on the needles). I’m pretty sure that the dark tan is Bullrush.

This is the knit answer to Berzelius. Or maybe it’s more accurate to say that Berzelius is the answer to Egbertine Cowl since it was designed by Caroline Fryar for the Fall 2012 yarn and pattern line. Both use all ten colors of Herriot and alternate colors in a delightful way! This Egbertine Cowl was knit by BlissYarns, which is located in Tennessee.

A Cowl-Times Day swap!

When dearest Flarkin saw the BFF Cowl in the Deep Fall 2012 Knitty, she came up with a great idea. A swap for the Ravelry members of the JMF group. Valentine’s day at 9p EST was the big reveal and both Susan and I watched (having not participated) with tears in our eyes at how wonderful, caring, smart, and funny these women are. It was super fun to see all the posts come rolling in with lots of photos of people opening up their packages and seeing what goodies were inside. Now, the swap was supposed to be just for the cowl, but there were many people that couldn’t help themselves and stuck in a little something extra for their partner.

I can’ t quite recreate the flurry of comments amidst webcam photos, but I thought I’d share one photo (mostly webcam shots!) of each swap participant at the opening.

As you can see, everyone had a fantastic time! In fact, people are very excited about the possibility of the next swap!

I’ll be certain to participate next time, since I’m just a TINY bit jealous of the ladies this time!

Valentine’s Gift to You!

Or should I say, Galentine’s Day? (Does anybody watch Parks & Rec? It started off kind of lame but now I think it’s really well written and hilarious. When Ben wanted to play The Settlers of Catan for his bachelor party, I nearly wet my pants laughing.)

Wow. I can’t believe I just wasted so much time talking about a t.v. show. Moving on.

We are not necessarily big fans of Valentine’s Day around here. We can take it or leave it, to be honest with you. But we do love knitting and yarn, so we’re giving you one of my very favorite patterns, written for one of my very favorite yarns, by one of my very favorite designers!

Ladies and gentlemen (but mostly ladies), here’s Bramble.
BRAMBLE_hero_medium2

Bramble is a gorgeous cabled wrap, knit is Sabine and shown here in Icicle. (This is one of my favorite colors and most of the yarns in my personal stash are this lovely shade of blue.)

I love this picture of Emily modeling Bramble, because I remember that it was raining when we shot it, and that there is an umbrella being held over Emily’s head just out of the shot. The rest of us got completely drenched and we all ran back into the farmhouse as soon as we were done, laughing all the way.

BRAMBLE_cable_detail_medium2

The pattern for Bramble can be downloaded right here, or by visiting the Sabine link on the free pattern page. (By the way, Lauria worked with our graphic designer on the new layout for our free patterns, and has optimized them for printing at home. No one like a pattern that uses up your entire ink cartridge! They are still lovely but now they are smart as well. Cause that’s how we roll.)

Happy Valentine’s Day, y’all! I hope your day is filled with people you love.

Yarned by You: Findley Shawl Gallery

Susie told me that Findley Dappled is KFI’s most popular spring yarn line! That is hugely flattering. I can see why, though! Findley is a laceweight yarn with lovely sheen and drape and holds up very well to wear. Everyone seems to love working with it! And do you know what people love making with Findley? Shawls! There are tons of shawls on Ravelry using Findley! So I thought I’d share a few of them with you for today’s post.

alenegrini used Dove to knit Holden Shawlette. She purchased the yarn at one of my LYS!

LynsYarn knit this Zetor. I’m thinking for projects like this blocking wires are a necessity!

knitgirl389 knit DeepintheMeadow in Fresco and Crocodile. If you look closely, you’ll see that it’s beaded!

Cheetah2011 knit this Tuch / shawl *Filigrano* in Atmosphere. This picture shows off the color amazingly!

I’ve featured Handmadebykoren’s before. I couldn’t resist showing this Doubloon in Malachite.

cjspensley knit this super-popular Traveling Woman in Clear Blue Sky. I can’t decide what her blocking board is!

What do you knit with Findley? What would you like to see in next week’s Yarned by You?

Slow Week

For some reason this week has felt never-ending.  At the same time, I don’t feel like I’ve accomplished much.  Maybe it’s just the winter doldrums.  It’s gone from bitter cold with a smattering of snow (enough to lightly dust the ground but melt by the next day) to sunny and in the high 50′s.  There’s talk of rain tomorrow.  Winter rain is not something I handle well.  It makes me grumpy and bitter that it should be beautiful snow; delicate, beautiful flakes of happiness to settle on branches and cover the world in a layer of fresh white.  Instead it’s rain and mud and brown and grey and cold and BLAH.

On the plus side, we actually did get those bitter cold snaps that I was hoping for.  With any luck this will keep the overgrowth of parasites and pests in check this year.

02.07.13e

Also I should be happy that we’ve gotten some snow.  Some snow is better than no snow, right?

Plus, in between the snow and rain and the cold and the warm I have managed to get outside and take care of a few things here and there.  Which is when I discovered these:

02.07.13f

My garlic has sprouted! All those many bulbs I planted in the fall are waking up and sending out shoots in preparation for spring.  I have already begun dreaming of my garden this year and my head is full of plans for what we’ll grow and where we’ll put the new squash bed.

But for now it is still winter, and I still need to tough it out and finish my darn sweater before it gets too warm to wear it.

One sleeve to go!

Yarned by You

Alright folks, I’ve run out of themed Yarned by You posts! Unless I think of something brilliant (or someone requests something), I’ll be putting up an assortment of things from here on out, with sporadic themed posts when I think something up. So if you want to see a particular thing, let me know and I’ll do my best!

handmadebykoren has knitted up some GORGEOUS JMF patterns as shop displays for Gather Here, a wonderful one-of-a-kind shop located in Cambridge, MA. This is her Hattie (designed by Caroline Fryar) in Herriot. Such a stunner!

Also knit in Herriot, Barbara emailed this photo of It All Comes Together to Susan:

This is the ubiquitous Central Park Hoodie knit by purltwo in the special edition yarn Cormo Rusticus. It looks so lofty and squishy and warm!

In contrast, teribella’s Bonnie is knit with an open gauge that gives this sweater a lovely drape and spring feel! Cormo Rusticus is versatile!

Amy Kaspar designed this beautiful Fallen Lady Stole for Findley. This looks so delightfully light and snuggle-worthy! I can’t believe that there are no projects for it, yet!

This is Ahern’s Maude knit up in Findley Dappled in 105 Clear Blue Sky. I love the lacy top giving way to the ribbing! I bet it’s flattering for many shapes and sizes.

That’s all for this week! What are you knitting? What do you want to see next?
