9th Blogiversary…

imageedit_68_9630010697

On Wednesday, October 5th MV Obsession will be 9 years old.  NINE.  Nine years of obsession about the place that I love most in the world, that’s a lot of obsessing. Today’s post will be number 982 and it all began with these words…

Hi, my name is Joan and I’m a Vineyard-a-holic…

Followed by…

 My obsession/love affair with Martha’s Vineyard started early in my life.  I was around 2 and a half in this picture and this was already my second trip.

My connection to MV was through my mother who although was born in Maine was raised on MV.   She went to Oak Bluffs high school (there was no regional high school, each town had its own back then) and after graduating moved to NJ where she met my father and quickly converted him into an MV fan.

We stayed with my godparents in Oak Bluffs every summer.    Life on MV was so different from Newark, NJ where I spent the other part of my existence.   My mother and I would take the train from NY to Woods Hole in June,  my dad would arrive for the entire month of August and we’d all sadly leave the beginning of September.

My summers were filled with trips to the beach in Oak Bluffs… endless rides on the Flying Horses… ice cream at the Frosty Cottage on Circuit Ave… popcorn at Darling’s… fairs and parades… at least one trip to Gay Head (Aquinnah)… visiting relatives in Indian Hill… movies… setting pins at the bowling alley in Oak Bluffs… endless hours at the Oak Bluffs library… Bible school at the Tabernacle… Illumination Night… and one especially painful memory of my first and only dance lesson at the Tivoli ballroom where the Oak Bluffs police department now stands.

These are just a few snippets of memories and stories I’d like to share.  Hope whoever reads them finds them as enjoyable as I did experiencing them.’

MV Obsession isn’t strictly about the Vineyard anymore but like the header says it’s ‘almost all the time.’

Feel free to wander through the category links along the right side, visitors are always welcome

Happy 9th blogiversary MV Obsession🙂

Abandoned Fairy Tales…

Fairy Tale Forest - Oak Ridge, NJ

Fairy Tale Forest – Oak Ridge, NJ

Driving through Oak Ridge, NJ with my daughter Deb we passed Fairy Tale Forest which used to be a thriving, magical and popular family spot.  It was built in 1957 by hand by German immigrant Paul Woehle.  CLICK HERE to read about the park.

pizap.com14730125136271 pizap.com14730124059471

The property is now owned by a storage company but as you can see some of the attractions are still in good shape.  It is rumored the park will reopen in 2017 !

A lot of memories are contained within this park, my daughters were there when they were little as were my grandchildren.

pizap.com14730159998581

In comparison to the condition and optimistic future of Fairy Tale Forest, The Land of Make Believe has been truly abandoned and left to ghosts of fairy tales.   Take a look.

In the town of Hamburg, New Jersey stands an old mill and a gingerbread castle.

Wheatsworth Mill and Gingerbread Castle.

100_4437

The Gingerbread Castle sits silently at the end of this driveway,  surrounded not by a moat but by barbed wire fencing and ‘do not trespass’ signs.

Come closer and take a look…

My creation

Once upon a time, back in the late 1920’s, the Gingerbread Castle was the centerpiece of an amusement park built next to the Wheatsworth Mill.  The Gingerbread Castle  was in continuous operation until 1978… it reopened briefly in the ’80’s and then closed for good in 1989.

Fairy tale characters used to abound here… now, sitting alone on his wall only Humpty Dumpty remains.

100_4439

The Gingerbread Castle is slowly fading away…

100_4438

Sadly eventually only memories will remain.

There you have the story of two fairy tale themed parks… one with a hopefully happy ending, the other with no happy ending, just the end.

Chappy 2001…

It’s only been 4 months since we lost Chappy in April 2016 but today, Aug 25 of 2001 is fresh in our memories.

101_2838

15 years ago today, Aug 25, 2001, Chappy came home to NJ to live with us.

It was a dark and stormy night… no wait, that’s another story.   It was actually a beautiful sunny, white puffy cloud, mild August day when Deb (his mom), and I traveled to Kittanning, PA to pick him up.   We had been there two weeks prior to look over the litter of new Boykin Spaniel puppies and to sort of reserve the one that would be coming home with us today.    We thought it went well, Deb chose the future Chappy and the breeder put a red mark inside his ear… he has since been referred to by us as… yes, red ear.

In the two week interim preparations were made for Chappy’s arrival… bedding, toys, food & water dishes, toys, crate, pillows, toys… you get the picture.

So off Deb and I went on Friday, Aug 24th to drive the 6 hours to Kittanning, spend the night and then pick red ear, oops, Chappy up in the morning.   Deb had spent the day at work  being anxious to get the day over with and get on the road.  Deb didn’t feel well that night, stress, the long drive, the anxiety of picking up Chappy, it all took a toll.   Soon morning rolled around and after a quick breakfast off to the breeder’s we headed.

The puppies were awake and adorable, they were playing and yipping and being all sorts of cute.

100_6770

Except one…. he was off to the side looking all unsure of everything… yes… it was indeed ‘red ear’…. oh dear.

100_6769

The breeder told Deb she was not under any obligation to take him as he wasn’t sure this puppy was adoptable at the time.    And that’s when I saw my daughter fall apart.    We thought we had it all worked out and would walk in, pick up the future Chappy and leave, well it wasn’t going to be that easy.

In the meantime other folks were coming in to pick out puppies and to be honest it was quite annoying that they would pick one up… look at it… say yes or no and be off.  How were they doing that… was there some kind of pup-telepathy that we didn’t have ?

As we stood there and mulled over the situation two of the puppies scampered over to us and pretty much wore themselves out vying to be Deb’s choice.

100_6772

I knew pretty much right off the bat which one I would choose and I really tried to hide my choice from Deb and let her make her own decision.   She says she could read on my face which one I liked best and I’m sure she could.   She was so distraught that at one point I blurted out that she could bring both of them home !!!

And so the competition continued… Mr Personality vs Mr Adorable.  Mr Personality was sleek and energetic and was quite lovable.  Mr Adorable was fuzzier faced and a little smooshed nosed and also energetic and lovable.

Which one did Deb choose, or rather who chose her.  Why it was Chappy of course, or formerly known as… Mr Adorable.  By the way, he was my choice from the very beginning… just saying.

100_6773

Chappy saying good-by to his parents Buddy & Tawny.  He looks a lot like his mom and has her sweet personality.

100_6774

With the traumatic morning behind us we headed on our 6 hour trip home.  Chappy slept in Deb’s lap for most of the ride only awakening when big scary trucks rumbled past or when we stopped for food or gas.  We also stopped at McDonald’s where he caused quite a commotion with his cuteness.

100_6777

100_6776

At long last we were home and settling in very nicely with family and toys.

I Won’t Dance…

The Tivoli building… Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard (circa 1920)

101_5269

101_5268

The two story, full block Tivoli Dance Hall stood from 1901 until 1964 where the Oak Bluffs Town Hall is today.  The bottom floor housed shops and an ice cream parlor.  My godmother worked in the ice cream parlor and I always enjoyed visiting her there… one time in particular jumps to mind.

101_3039

I was 3 years old and had newly mastered winking and was anxious to put it to use.  Sitting at a table behind my mother and facing me was a sailor.  Being that I was wearing a sailor dress I figured we had something in common and so I began winking at him… it did not take long for my mother to notice.  She turned around and as she did the young sailor headed for our table.  He smiled and said he was alone on the Vineyard for the day and wanted to tell my mother how charming he thought I was (blushing here).  Not only did my mother invite him to join us at the table but she invited him home for dinner (this was mid 1940’s). I was amazed at how powerful this winking thing was.  I don’t think we kept in touch with him but obviously I’ve never forgotten him… I do however keep the winking thing to a minimum.I was 3 years old and had newly mastered winking and was anxious to put it to use. The entire second floor of the Tivoli Dance Hall was just that, the dance hall.  It was huge, at least in the eyes of a 4 year old being dragged there against her will for a dance lesson.  I did like all the windows and how far you could see out of them, I liked the clicking sound my shoes made on the floor, I loved the brand new sundress I had on …

IMG_1006

… but, I did NOT like the group dancing part.  I remember reluctantly getting in line with the other victims children, but my feet did not move, they planted themselves firmly in one spot and stayed there.  Everyone danced around me but I did not care to join in, not only didn’t I dance I wouldn’t talk to anyone either.

101_2817

My mother was not happy with me… we did not stop for promised ice cream at the Frosty Cottage on Circuit Ave for ice cream and we didn’t come home with a sailor for dinner either.

Once Upon A Time There Was A Train To MV …

Mid-June every summer of my childhood my mother and I would start our trip to the Vineyard.for the entire summer  There was no I-95, not that we had a car anyway… no, our train travels would begin in Newark, New Jersey and end in Woods Hole.  Yes, WOODS HOLE, trains used to go right to the ferry.

100_9407

We would take a train from Pennsylvania Station in Newark, NJ to Pennsylvania station in New York city where we would have to run from one end of the station to the other to board the New York/New Haven & Hartford’s train on the Old Colony line called the Day Cape Codder, which would take us all the way from New York City to Woods Hole, MA. That’s right, all the way to Woods Hole.Pennsylvania Station was built in 1910, covered nearly 8 acres, extended 2 city blocks and was one of the largest public spaces in the world.  Its 3 year demolition began in October 1963.  It was replace with another Penn Station which Madison Sq Garden sits atop… it’s functional but not as beautiful as the original:)

Day Cape Codder

100_8757The train stopped at what is now the staging area for cars waiting to get onto the ferries. The tracks ran under the overpass in the left corner of this photograph.  It was literally only steps from train to boat.  A comfortable and luxurious way to travel in the days when lots of people didn’t have cars and the road system left a lot to be desired anyway.

The trains had dining cars with each table dressed in fancy tablecloths and crisply ironed napkins.  The waiters and conductors were always the same and seemed to remember me from year to year… made me feel special and grown up. Train service to Woods Hole ended in the 1960′s.

(Woods Hole circa 1890’s)

(circa 1950’s)

The ferry, the Nobska/Nantucket would take us to MV.

We’d land in Oak Bluffs and our relatives would be there to greet us, and three glorious months on the Vineyard would begin.

We traveled light, I would have my favorite doll, Beverly, and my teddy bear with me and my mother would have a small suitcase with a few belongings in it, the rest of the things… like ALL my toys we sent to and from the Vineyard by Railway Express.

IMG_1315

It took days for the rest of our things to arrive and I would watch every day for the Railway Express truck to arrive.

100_8170

DSC_0203

and then summer on the Vineyard would officially be under way:)

Chappy’s 3 Guest Posts …

Been thinking a lot about Chappy and of course how much he is missed and what a void he has left.  Along with the memories and the thousands of photographs of Chappy I also have a few guest posts from him on this blog… you see where I’m going with this right:)

~~~~~~~~~~IMG_2617  ~~~~~~~~~~
Here in Chappy’s own words, post #1 – MV WITH PETS
Chappy in the car
Hi, this is me in the car going to Martha’s Vineyard.  I know I look all relaxed and eager to get there but in reality I’m a nervous mess.  I don’t like car rides, especially the 1000 hours it takes to get there from NJ.  OK, maybe not 1000, more like 6 but in dog hours it could be 1000.
Once we arrived I could stretch my legs, have a bite to eat and get settled in. See, this is me very, very settled in… in fact I’m so settled I’m almost asleep.
The Island Inn is a great place to stay with your people.  All the accommodations have kitchenettes in them… I love that, I think it’s very important to always have food nearby.   The people there have their own dogs who help us 4 legged guests check in.  Everyone is super friendly and nice.  We like it there a lot.
I have to say that at first I thought the dogs and kids were a little aloof and then my mom explained to me that this is something called a sculpture.  Wow, what a relief that was, I mean there wasn’t any scent I could pick up and it freaked me out.
I love walking around on the Vineyard, the scenery is so pretty… like here in Edgartown near the lighthouse.  Even though I can’t see all the colors I’m still amazed at the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard.
And the shopping… the Vineyard is so dog friendly that I’m allowed just about everywhere.  There are lots of good stores for dogs… I think my favorite one is Good Dog Goods in Oak Bluffs.   The owner Kerry Scott and all her people who work there are so nice.  They get right down on the floor and play with me,  and offer me treats… I like that in a person.  We always bring bags of treats home to NJ with us… I like that too.  And I like this sticker.
So let’s see… I’ve mentioned where we like to stay… and where I like to shop… and how dog friendly MV is… all that’s left is for you to experience MV yourself.
Chappy in the car
This is me on the way home… I am so totally and happily exhaustatated that I’m actually sleeping.
Post #2 – GOING TO THE MV FIBER FESTIVAL
Chappy
Hi, I’m Chappy and I just popped over to gram’s blog  to tell you about another wonderful trip to MV. Actually, I posted here in January about pets on MV, it was so much fun that I’m back to guest post again.
   Bradys NESW inn in Oak Bluffs is where we stayed.
  This is Amie, she is Brady’s dog and the official greeter for us four-legged guests.  She showed us right to our room and clued me in on the good things to sniff and check out.  She’s really nice.
  Our room had a window seat, I wasn’t sure what that was although I’ve heard mom say time and time again that she’d love to have one.  Now I know why, they’re wonderful.. I mean really, a big window to look out of and the sun pouring in to bask in… what more (except food) could a guy ask for.  Once in awhile I actually shared it with mom… see how happy she looks… I do too.
The first morning we were there we went for a walk after breakfast.  The beach and the water look so pretty but it was too cold to dip my paws in the water.  I met another dog friend, she had only been with her adopted mom a few days and was getting used to her new home… she was nice.
Then we went to the MV Fiber Farm festival.  I had never seen sheep and goats before and I just didn’t know what to make of them.  They sure didn’t smell like any animals I ever met before.  I was perplexed and they seemed to be too.  “Hey, you lookin at me!”  Yup, they sure were, they kept a close eye on mom and me, wherever we moved to they followed us… it was like a game after awhile.
100_6266
100_6241
I got to meet two more dogs… Fritz, a sheltie and
also a brown spaniel.It was fun getting to know them and we played each time we saw each other.
This is mom and me relaxing a little bit.  She’s of course knitting and I’m fighting to keep my eyes open.  I lost..teehee.  It was a really, really full and fun day.   But the fun wasn’t over because the next day..
100_6278
… we went to see the baby goats that weren’t at the festival.Look at me !  I’m sniffing a goats behind !!  I can’t believe it either.
They’re so cute and smaller then I am, but not for long. They were so friendly, they came right up to us and they let mom and gram pet them…… mom even KISSED one !
This is mom and me sitting in the Campground while gram takes a few pictures.  We were all happily tired.
100_6301
We did manage to visit a few new people while we were on MV and of course we ate some good food too.  I love eating in mom’s car which we call Cafe Volvo. I always get some of what mom and gram are eating and that makes me very happy especially when they have chicken… or donuts… or hamburgers… or anything.
Thank you gram for letting me visit your blog… this is Chappy signing off.
And lastly post #3 written on his 11th birthday, July 7, 2012 simply titled..IT’S CHAPPY
100_1760
Hi, it’s Chappy.  I haven’t visited gram’s blog in awhile and since today is my 11th birthday she invited me to write a post.   Here goes.
This is where it all began… me with my brothers and one sister all smooshed up against our dog mom Tawny.
This is mom and dad… Tawny and Buddy.  I’ve been told I look more like my mom and have her sweet disposition…but I’ve got some of dad’s sense of fun in me too.
100_1762
100_1762
This is my mom, Deb.  Oops, I’m skipping ahead here, I wanted to tell you about our first day together.  Well , not all of it, some of it was traumatic but that’s for another post someday.
101_4783100_0759
After I said goodbye to Tawny and Buddy we began our long trek across Pennsylvania to New Jersey.  You can see I was already in the driver’s seat.
100_1763
I caused quite a ruckus when we stopped at McDonald’s for lunch.  I had no idea I was so cute and I certainly had no idea what wonderful smells and tastes were out in the world.  Talk about excitement, I actually stayed awake for awhile.
100_1768
Finally after days on the road, well it seemed like days to me, what did I know about cars and roads and big noisy trucks that kept waking me up.  Mom says it was more like 6 hours… in puppy time that IS days.   Good thing I was so rested ’cause when we got home look at all the toys waiting for me… I couldn’t believe it.  The six of us siblings had one toy and one tennis ball to play with, I was in toy heaven.
100_1766100_1764
Just look at me… sweet, adorable, just a hint of mischief in my eyes.  Yup, I picked the absolute  best mom and family in the world. But enough of the mushy stuff.
100_1765
The pictures below weren’t my idea…  gram snuck them on here when I wasn’t looking.  Really, I have no idea how they got here but go ahead and enjoy them… I like the ones of me with mom the best.  Okay, bye for now, Chappy signing off:)
I hope you enjoyed Chappy’s posts, I wish he had stopped by more often, he really had a way with woofs and words.  Love you Chappy >3
Beloved Chappy …
Boykin Spaniel
How do I even begin to write this post about our beloved granddog Chappy.  What can you say about a dog that has been part of your life for nearly 15 years and gave you nothing but love, enjoyment and devotion.  He was wonderful, pure and simple just a dear sweet soul of a dog.
I was with my daughter Deb, the day she picked him up.   He was a little ball of fuzz, not sleek and curly like some of his liter mates but he was charming and cute and determined to come home with us.  Here he is with his liter mates… and saying goodbye to his parents Buddy & Tawny…
pizap.com14606758672421
…and start his life with his mom Deb and a family who adored him.
pizap.com14606772741231
There’s so much I want to say about Chappy and so many, many hundreds of pictures of him I’d like to share but I could never fit it all into one post, or even ten for that matter.
Maude Louise …
My mother, Maude Louise Littlefield Freeman was born in Waterville, Maine on March 11, 1907.
IMG_2256
I have posted the above pictures etc several times here on my blog either on my mother’s birthday or on Mother’s Day so why am I doing it again this year ?   During the past several months my daughter Deb and I (90% Deb) have been digging into the ancestry of our family.  I posted back in October 2015 how my mother’s ancestors did indeed come on the first voyage of the Mayflower …. but since then Deb has discovered ancestors on mom’s side all over the place and going back many generations.  She’s also discovered facts about my grandparents on my dad’s side which has been amazing since we didn’t know anything about them at all.  But that’s a post for another time. Today it’s all about my mom, Maude Louise.
A friend asked me the other day to describe my mother…what was she like, what did she like to do.  I pondered this question and found it was sort of a hard one to answer.  To me my mother was funny and a little nutsy at times, a trait I’ve happily inherited by the way… she was kind and loving,  a hard worker, she adored my dad, and me. She liked to crochet, she made tablecloths and doilies,  and also made lace on handkerchiefs.  She made one for my best friend to carry on her wedding day… when I got married I carried it as my ‘something borrowed’.. as did my daughter Patty when she got married.
She had her problems as well though, she went through a period of over a year when I was around 11 when she wouldn’t leave the house… at all… ever.  She would wait for me to get home from school and then send me to the corner store for her cigarettes or milk or whatever.  We didn’t know what to do about this but then the solution presented itself one morning when my dad was home and he took advantage of it.   Mom was doing the wash in one of those machines that had wringers where you’d put the clothes through to get excess water off of them.  Somehow my mother’s arm went half way through the wringer…she screamed.. my dad went running to see what was wrong.  He quickly took the wringer apart and freed mom’s arm.  She claimed she was okay but my dad being a policeman who had worked in the emergency squad division thought otherwise.  And here’s where his genius solution to mom’s not wanting to leave the house came in.  He said he was taking her to the hospital, she started up the stairs to get dressed (she was in her robe) and he said no, there wasn’t time for that.  And then he took her to the worst, most crowded hospital in the city and left her there.  He left her because I was due home for lunch break and someone had to be there.  Of course when I got home I wondered why Mom wasn’t there and he said she’d gone shopping !  Shopping, really !  The woman hadn’t left the house in months and months and now she suddenly went downtown to go shopping.  I was skeptical.  When I came home from school later in the day there sat my mother all dressed up like she really had gone shopping.  I, of course asked if she’d bought me anything.. hey I was 11 and very self involved.
But what my dad did was just what was needed to snap her back to herself.  She had been so embarrassed sitting in the hospital in her night clothes with so many people around that I guess she vowed to take her life back and do something other than sitting and crocheting all the time.
And she did…. a week later she went to the personnel office in the bank she had worked for before I was born, applied for a job as a bookkeeper and was hired on the spot.
IMG_2450
But there was a lot more to my mother than that episode above… the fact that she had the spirit in her to get herself back on track, I find myself calling on that spirit at times too.
She was a kook in her younger years and I’ve got the photo album that proves it.
The first page says ‘taken during the year 1926’.. most of the photos are of mom and her friends on Martha’s Vineyard…there are a few from NJ as well.   I love how she wrote in white ink on the black pages…and wow, what typical 1926 sayings she wrote.  My mother it seems was turning into a flapper… I love it.
For instance, the picture on the lower left says ‘The Oak Bluffs Sheik “oh daddy” “He’s a hound with the ladies.”  I’m 80% sure I know who that hound was but I’m not telling :)
It would have been fun to have known my mother when she was that age, to have hung out with her and her friends on the Vineyard, to be in on their inside jokes and what really went on in with the sheik of Oak Bluffs ! Okay, maybe not. Does one really want to know THAT much about their parents, some things are better left unknown :)
pizap.com14576305662362Yes indeed, my mother was one of my favorite people to spend time with.  Some nights when my dad was working the night shift my mom and I would have our favorite supper and speak our ‘silly language’, which was to put ‘S’ in front of every word… not as easy as you think and certainly made for gales of laughter from both of us.
I feel that maybe I shouldn’t have spent so much time on the above story about her bout with, depression, and I was tempted to go back and delete it…but no, it goes to show that she was a strong woman, who lost herself for awhile and then found and reinvented herself…and I’m proud of her for that and like to think that I got some of that fortitude or spunk from her… I definitely got my quirkiness from her and I thank her for that.
Happy birthday mom… <3
Vineyard Februaries …
I’ve been to Martha’s Vineyard in February and I love it.  I love it any time but February is a different from summer on the Vineyard as you can possibly get.
There’s a  cold crispness in the air, the colors are more vivid, the Island is quiet and yet speaks volumes to those who take the time to look, listen and drink in the beauty and wonder that is the soul of Martha’s Vineyard.
February 1989…  a light dusting of snow made everything look like powdered sugar had fallen all over the Island.
pizap.com14548805234921
February 1995…  no snow that trip but bitter cold.  Did not stop me from visiting the Gay Head cliffs in Aquinnah on the western most tip of the Vineyard… or hiking through the woods of Christiantown to visit the tiny chapel there.
pizap.com14548888448203
I also  experimented a bit with black and white film. From top left… Edgartown harbor, Christiantown stone wall..Sengekontacket Pond and South Beach.
pizap.com14548891358011
February 2007… bitter cold, dusting of over night snow, icy ponds and harbors… and brilliant sunsets.
pizap.com14548893608801
My birthday is in February and sadly the only one I’ve ever spent on the Vineyard was in 1950 when my beloved godmother, Gertrude Norris passed away.  But I’m not anywhere near done having birthdays so who knows what the future will bring :)
My dad was a police officer in Newark, NJ.  For many of his years on the force he worked in the Emergency Squad division.  During the long hours between calls the guys would keep themselves busy in various ways like cooking.  Near the Christmas holidays they always came up with a special project, like candle making for instance.
In 1956 they made Santas.  I still have ours.  Santa stands about 3 and 1/2 feet tall and is made from press board. After the outline was drawn the guys cut out the Santas and my dad set to work drawing the features, clothing and bag of toys.  At that point our Santa came home and my mother and I painted him.  I’m not sure how many coats of paint we used but Santa was spread out on our kitchen table for about a week before he was completely dry.  I don’t know what kind of paint we used either but here it is 59 years later and he’s not chipped or faded.  This was the only time I ever remember the three of us doing a family project together.
I love everything about this Santa, even the buttons being on the wrong side… but the thing I love the most is that he looks like my dad… a self portrait so to speak.
