I Know …

100_6855

Someone said to me that they thought I shouldn’t write so much about Martha’s Vineyard, that I should write about where I live, or other places I’ve been. That’s all well and good, and I do write about those things… but my blog is mostly about MV and my obsession with this 100 sq mile piece of land abounding with charm and in some cases, mystical qualities.

I got to thinking about something a teacher in high school said… ‘to write what you know about.  I know how my heart flutters as it nears the ferries in Woods Hole. I know how no other place I’ve ever been delights my soul and makes me feel at peace and at home.

I know how I love to breathe deeply and fill my lungs with sea air. I know how many ‘traditions’ I have to experience each time I’m on MV. I know that it’s a hassle getting there sometimes, but that once I’ve driven onto the ferry it’s all been worth it.  I know that whether I’m physically on the Vineyard or not that in my mind and soul I am always there.

100_3719

What is it that makes a place so special to a person. I know in my case it’s that MV is where my mother grew up and where I’ve been going all my life. I know also that now my family feels the same connection, and I feel content knowing that fact.

How can sea, sand, grass and trees be so special in one place. It must be that each experience is a part of the sum of the whole.

It’s also the surprises each trip to MV holds for me. It’s starting a conversation only to find out that the person you’re talking to knew you or your family years ago.  It’s dipping your toes into the water in the same spot you did when you were five years old and suddenly being transported back to that time. It’s remembering your loved ones who aren’t there in body anymore but definitely in spirit.

It’s all those things and more…. it’s Martha’s Vineyard

What does the Vineyard mean to you ?

…and more trellis…

that's that I guess (for the trellis)

Got the sides up and tied up the unruly heap that was, well, everything in the garden.

green beans, (carrots), kale, and chard

I definitely let the beans choke out most of the carrots, but that's fine since I have never grown successful carrots in my life anyway. Only bitter failure carrots. I thought about naming a whole new variety after myself actually. "Amber's Bitter Failure." They'd be a big hit among people who don't even like carrots anyway.

So now those green beans have a nice place to raise their babies, because LOOK. BABIES!

baby green beans!

Gets me every time. :)

The other bed is loaded with broccoli greens and a few happy beets,

broccoli and beets

as well as the squash family monsters,

Those pumpkin vines were challenging to move and tie, but it'll be worth it if we can have some little fun (and tasty) pumpkins come fall!

tiny pumpkin

Now all to do is the path. Maybe this weekend if I'm lucky.

Unrelated: my second guest post on the Juniper Moon Farm blog is up with a little more progress on my Blaithin.

7-28

I try to at least touch it once a day, even if a certain small person does not let me actually knit more than a few stitches.

Oh Lydia, lucky for you you're such a cutie...

Girls Having Fun …

In July 1984 I took my daughter Deb and her best friend Dawn to Martha’s Vineyard

Dawn and Deb – July 18, 1984

Dawn and Deb – December 29, 2007

The trip was a new experience in so many ways. I had never gone away alone with two teenagers, so that was different. I had never driven to MV by myself, so that was different. What I discovered was, that I liked being different sometimes.

101_4948

We stayed here at the Kelley House.

We did a lot of things together but the girls also spent time doing their own things while I did mine. It was a nice mix of togetherness and apartness (is that a word).

We went to South Beach

  100_4390 100_4389

Of course to Aquinnah to see the cliffs.

 100_4391.

The girls rented bikes one day while I went to the kite festival in Oak Bluffs, we had great weather and we laughed a lot, which is not hard to do around Deb and Dawn.

One incident that sticks out in my mind is dinner one night at The Wharf Pub & Restaurant in Edgartown. We ate early and the restaurant was almost empty. We were in the middle of our meal when our waitress came over to us and said.. “you might want to eat slowly as Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley are on their way in and I thought the girls might get a kick out of seeing them.” GIRLS… forget the girls, I was the one getting all excited. So we nibbled and waited, and waited… and then THEY walked past the window next to our table and into the restaurant. We wondered if it would be possible to say hello to them (it wasn’t), but as we left the restaurant and walked past their table Billy Joel smiled and waved. We giggled all the way back to the hotel and then called home to share our exciting news.

Twenty nine years later Deb and Dawn are still best friends and they still laugh A LOT when they’re together. I’ll never forget that trip and know they haven’t either.

Diamond In The Sand …

101_3623

101_3622

This is the beach in Oak Bluffs, this is where we always went when I was growing up. I remember one time in particular when I was there with my parents when I was about three or four years old.

101_2849

After playing in the water with my dad and digging in the sand with my mom we started gathering up our blanket and things to leave. All of a sudden my mother gasped and yelled for my father… “my diamond ring is gone” she said in alarm. My dad immediately took charge of the situation by telling me NOT to move, just stay put.  I quickly rushed over to the people nearby and told them my mother had just lost her ring in the sand and my father was going to find it. So much for listening. They, along with other beach goers who had heard me, started to get up to help my father look for the ring. “No” he said.. “don’t walk on the sand, if the sand is disturbed any further the ring will sink lower, I think I might have only one chance to find it.” We all held our breaths as he surveyed the situation and then after what seemed like an eternity (especially to me who was staying still) he scooped up a handful of sand. Miraculously there, shining out from the sand was my mothers diamond engagement ring.

101_4906

I’m still amazed that he found it, how did he know where to look, how had my running through the sand not made it sink lower. I’m sure that ring was being watched over somehow.

Vineyard Tasting …

With the Taste Of The Vineyard coming up on June 13 and June 15, 2013, I’d like to tell my story about the one and only time I went to this lovely and delicious event 20 years ago in 1993.

My daughter Deb and I decided  to treat ourselves to The Taste of the Vineyard. It’s put on every year by the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust. Restaurants, caterers and beverage purveyors from around the Island gather under tents to present some of their specialities to be tasted. We’d never gone before and it seemed like a fun and different thing to do. Off we went to the Vineyard for a glorious long weekend of eating, shopping and tasting. The weather turned brutally hot all along the Eastern seaboard, it verged on 100 degress which is unusual for mid June. A few hours before the Taste was to begin welcomed thunder storms rolled in and dropped the temps about 25 degrees. The evening was cool and clear and perfect.

100_2205

We donned our new outfits and headed over to the grounds of the Preservation Trust which are located at the Dr Daniel Fisher house in Edgartown. The house is a beautiful Federal style home surrounded by lush gardens. It’s gorgeous.

We gingerly and hungrily entered the tents where all foods and drinks were on display. Lots of eager tasters were already there. We got our dishes and start wending through the crowds. We found seats and set about our tastings.

The tables were set with crisp white tablecloths.. in the middle of the tables were mounds of sand with seashells and rocks scattered about and a large hurricane lamp with candle sitting in the middle of the sand. Simple and tasteful, much like the occasion. The bite sized portions of appetizers and entrees were just satifyingly enough. Had to leave room for the abundance of dessert samples after all.

100_1491

But… the thing that mostly interested me was trying for the first time the Frozen Cappuccino from Espresso Love one of my most favorite places on MV. I returned to our table with my cup, eager to taste what smelled and looked delicious. I set it on the table… or at least I thought I had… but no, I had sort of placed it precariously near the edge and it landed in my daughters lap, almost the entire cup of cappuccino!!!!!  On her new skirt !! 100_4217

(The part of the original skirt is now being portrayed by a stand-in)

100_4217

One that she loved and had hoped to wear many, many times. I felt awful, I still do… it was an accident. I mean after all I myself had gotten a drop or two on my new shoes. We cleaned her up as best we could and I believe she went and got me a second cup of frozen cappuccino. I set it down on the table and… it hit the rocks and there before our eyes it oozed from the rocks and sand onto the table cloth. It looked like the tide had come in… it wasn’t pretty and it was embarassing. Could it be that maybe the third time would work! I had to find out so off I went for the third cup of frozen cappuccino. I walked carefully back to the table, avoiding being bumped or nudged. I approached the table… Deb grimaced… I held the cup tightly in both hands… I bent to set it down… and… I did it, I made solid contact with table. I then raised the cup to my lips and actually got to taste the frozen cappuccino and I have to tell you… it was good, it was very very good, it was joy to my tastebuds. I loved it and I still do, I try to have one at least once during every trip to MV. And of course I feel compelled to apologize each time to my daughter for her long lost beautiful skirt.

This blurry picture of the two of us was taken at the end of the evening. At least we’re laughing… probably at my humungeous, but then trendy glasses.

The Village …

Recently my daughter Patty gave me this gift cardfor a mother/daughter trip into NYC to Greenwich Village.  Here we are on the train on the brilliantly beautiful morning of Tuesday, June 4th.
