Coming Soon: Lambs!

Wednesday was shearing day, and as usual Emily made quick and easy work of it. My favorite part is, of course, getting to catch up with her and hear her stories of the past year of life on the road.

It also great to see the color of the wool as it peals back from the shears, and imagine how it will look spun up into yarn.

Emily has some amazing colored wool woven into her hair this year. I’m in total awe.

This might be Granola’s first shearing. I’m not actually certain. She says his wool is much more Rambouillet than BFL. I’ll be interested to see both how it evolves as he grows, and how his offspring will look.

I love how dark they are underneath the sun-lightened outer layers.

While Darby is a dark, inky black underneath, and Lyra is not grayish black, Carina tends to be a lovely silver.

The good news is that we were thinking it may be too early to tell if anyone was bred. But, in at least Carina’s case, all indicators point to yes! She’s already got a bit of an udder and her sides are bulging in the best way.

Within the next month I’ll be on lamb watch!

Memorial Day 2018…

Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. In 1971, Congress established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May and as a federal holiday.

On my mother’s side of the family, my paternal great grandfather, Joseph Littlefield fought in the Civil War and died because of his wounds. He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. He was sent home to Maine to die. He died of typhoidal pnemonia on Sep 30, 1864, he is buried in Rome, Maine. Unfortunately his wife and his 3 oldest children died of the same thing shortly thereafter, leaving my grandfather, Charles Littlefield at age 10 the oldest of the four remaining children.

Below is a photo of the veteran’s section in the Fairmont Cemetery in Newark, New Jersey, where, on my father’s side of the family my great great paternal grandfather, Stephen Freeman is buried. Stephen did not die in the Civil War but was wounded in the battle of Antietam in 1862. He was sent home, lived another 29 years and died on May 30, 1891, which ironically was Memorial Day.

Take a moment to remember the original reason for Memorial Day and the men and women who fought for, and gave their lives for our country.

Have a great Memorial Day and enjoy the weekend whatever you’re doing.

I Guess I’m an AuthorTuber Now

Stupid YouTube won’t let me do custom thumbnails yet, but this is how pretty they will be when I can.

Ya’ll probably remember a few months ago when I posted a few mitten knitting videos. I loved making the videos, but I have this problem with knitting for anything but my own enjoyment, so the videos I promised back in December completely stalled out.

That, and let’s be honest. Knitting is a hobby. Writing is my passion. And even thought I need a better microphone and eventually, a ton of better equipment in general, I think you can see the difference in the knitting videos versus my brand spanking new AuthorTube video.

So, while I’m working out the kinks of not whispering and not fidgeting too much on camera, enjoy the refreshing reality of a woman not afraid to censor herself on video.

Museum of the American Revolution-Philadelphia, Pa…

I wish there had been places like this when I was in school, history then was names and dates, this is hands on and brings history alive. I know more about the American Revolution now than I ever did.

The best place to start is watching the short film ‘Revolution’ and then proceeding to the main galleries. Beginning in the lower right of the map we have…

A Revolutionary War (1778-1783)

A New Nation (1783-present)

Last but not least, but certainly the most impressive – Washington’s War Tent

**From museum brochure – Created for use as a mobile field headquarters during the Revolutionary War, the tent likely was made in Reading, Pennsylvania in early 1778, while Washington was encamped at Valley Forge. It was used by George Washington from 1778 – 1783, and witnessed many dramatic moments during the War of Independence, including the 1781 Siege of Yorktown, the last major battle of the war. The tent was last displayed several decades ago at Valley Forge National Historical Park.

Since we had limited time in Philadelphia we weren’t able to see much else. I did however want to see the Liberty Bell and although that museum was closed it was visible from outside.

Review of The Busy Mom’s Guide to Writing

(Note: This review was unsolicited and totally independent. The authors don’t know me. The links, however, are amazon affiliate links.)

I picked this book up on Amazon a few weeks ago when I was trying to fit a few more hours into my day. And if I were leaving this review on amazon, I’s probably give 4 out of 5 stars, because it’s practical AF. But, the reason I picked it up was because it boasted about strategies to get more writing done and not ignore your kids. Unfortunately, the book didn’t offer me anything new in that area.

Write after the kids go to bed. Check.

Write in the morning before they get up. Check.

Write during naptime. Check.

Write during screen time. Check.

Write next to their playroom. Check.

Apparently I am rocking the writing when your kids are disrracted thing.

Hell, Rufus’s favorite game is to climb mommy and play with her hair, so here’s a realtime photo of me trying to compose this post.

Yes, that’s a Powerline t-shirt. A Goofy Movie 4eva.

So while the book didn’t give me any insights in to how to find more writing time in my day, unless I actually want to give up sleep, it was comforting to read writing advice from someone who knows the chaos of having young kids around.

For serious, I fantasize about the days when all of the kids are in school all day long, and I can bike to the coffee shop while wearing a fabulous sundress and a pair of sandals that were on sale and spend six straight hours composing prose so heartrendingly beautiful I am automatically nominated for a Pulitzer, even before it’s published.

But alas, that doesn’t help me get words on the page today.

When I mentioned a couple posts ago that I don’t dig writing books because they are often too subjective, that doesn’t include this book. Every single piece of advice is super helpful. It’s not going to give you daily writing prompts, but it’s going to help you get clear on your goals, figure out when to write, what to write. And holy crap, the writing/self-editing tips are worth the $2.99 alone.

If you’re just starting out, this book is golden, and the advice about finding time to write would probably be more useful to you if you’re not already cramming writing into every available opportunity throughout your day.

What I didn’t realize until I sat down to write this post, is that a second book just came out! The Busy Mom’s Guide to Indie Publishing (Busy Moms Guides Book 2) Just came out like freaking yesterday. So, of course I already have a copy and am going to devour it tomorrow, because, hello, The Other Lane comes out in less than seven weeks! I will take all the advice I can get.

What are you reading right now? Anything fun?

PS, Did you know I’m offering editing services now? If you’re a fiction writer and need someone to go over your manuscript, check out my work with me page above.
