Come see me in NYC!
I apologize for my prolonged absence from the blog- I came down with a wicked cold a couple of weeks ago, and, being pregnant, I couldn’t take anything for it. It was a pretty brutal two weeks of sore throats, stuffed-up head and exhaustion, but I am feeling much better now and I’m desperately trying to catch up on everything I missed while I was holed up under my comforter.
Before I go any further, I want to be sure and tell you that I will be speaking at Vogue Knitting Live in New York on January 17 in New York City and signing books afterwards. VKLive has turned into a super cool event (think a sheep and wool festival without the sheep.) There are so many amazing teachers and classes, and there is also a great marketplace with lots of vendors. If you can make a weekend of it you really should! But you can also just come hear me speak for the bargain price of $35, if you like.

Mike and I are making the trip to NYC for VK Live into a little romantic getaway (I can’t stand the word “baby moon”. Am I the only one?). We’re planning a trip to Mood Fabric and would like to have a couple of knock-out dinners. It’s been 10 years since I lived in Manhattan and my restaurant knowledge is a little rusty. Do you have any suggestions for really amazing, destination restaurants? Please share!
I am happily past the half-way point in my pregnancy. To be honest with you, the second trimester has been a breeze! More on that next week.

Hygge
I came across an article about the Danish concept of Hygge not long ago; about how people with Seasonal Affective Disorder (or those who just hate the colder, darker months) might benefit from adding a bit of it to their lives.
Hygge, as it turns out, is all about the “cozy” in life. Or, something like that. It’s a feeling that encompasses all of those things that make say, Christmas, so magical. It’s love. It’s an inviting fire with a cup of delicious tea when it’s snowy outside. It’s snuggling with your loved ones – furry or otherwise. For most of us knitters, it’s an afternoon free and a bag full of fresh-spun wool. It’s well-being. It’s sanctuary.
When I read about it, I knew it deep it my bones already. It was in there all along, just waiting for a good word to put to it. Paul has always called it all of my “little things”. Those things that make you feel at home, that make you happy. It turns out I’ve been practicing hygge my whole life.
December is, indeed, the sort of “holy month” for hygge, for lack of a better term. Think about it: the tree, the lights, the comfort foods, the festivities. It’s a month where we all know the cold and dark of winter is breathing down our backs but we push it aside to celebrate joy and warmth and love.
I have it all around me.
A darling paperwhite bulb in the kitchen window.
My favorite happy little sparkly reindeer ornament.
My very favorite tea, which I will enjoy this evening, snuggled on the couch with my girls after a dinner of spicy vegetable soup.
The soft glow of the Christmas tree, which still smells divine! We sat cuddled up next to it today and watched the classic Baryshnikov version of The Nutcracker.
These fantastic little heat packs. Great for cold feet, headaches, backaches, and cozying up your blankets at night.
A big, furry, polar bear of a dog and a tiny sweet kitten.
My purry little companion, curled up in a wool blanket. A wool blanket woven from the wool of the very sheep I can see from my comfy chair as I type. If that’s not hygge, I don’t know what is!
Go forth, fill your world with hygge! And even more, allow yourself to revel in it a bit!

Tile Order.
I loved making these. AND they all came out flat! If you are a clay artist you know how special that is. Wonder if the person who ordered a "variety of tiles" will take all of them? If not they will end up on Etsy!
Stay tuned!

First, the facts:
Title: Rustic Modern Knits: 23 Sophisticated Designs
Author: Yumiko Alexander
Published by: Interweave Press, 2014
Pages: 127
Type: Patterns
Chapters:
No chapters, just a list of patterns
The In-Depth Look:
Billed as having “23 sophisticated designs,” you know right away that this collection isn’t going to be just standard sweater shapes. And when you know the author’s last book was Rustic Modern Crochet, you know she’s going to be looking at her knitting in a different way.
She focuses here on accessories that are unique and different—taking design elements from crochet to make things that have interesting shapes and dimensions—something outside the usual knitting designs.
What follows is a collection of accessories—wraps, hats, scarves, vests, mitts—all with something different. Asymmetrical construction, a blend of stitch patterns and texture … variety is the name of the game.
I like the designer’s way of playing with color, and she has a good eye for shape and pattern, unusual though some of them are, her designs work. And by “unusual” I mean new and innovative rather than that vaguely polite, damning-with-faint-praise thing people do when they tell you your hideous new coat is “nice.” There are a couple designs I don’t quite “get” (the Midnight Tendril shawl being first on the list, if only because I can’t see the point. It looks fun to knit but utterly impractical to wear.) Mostly, though, the designs are pretty and interesting and unique—at least three of them are immediately on my “I would make that” list.
You should definitely check this out.
