Pogona After One Week

Because it’s been a busy holiday week (hope your’s wasn’t too busy!), I am not as far along on my pogona as I would like.

This cormo is blowing my mind. It’s gorgeous, and with the alpaca, it is just downright decadent.

I am doing the white in Fibonacci stripes, separated by two-row stripes of gray. I think the color contrast just adds to the texture of the piece.

It might bee 100 degrees out now, but I can’t wait to try this shawl on. Knitting this out of my handspun has convinced me that it’s worth spending more time spinning so I can knit with handspun more often.

Chappy Is A Teen-Ager …

Today is Chappy’s 13th birthday.

He’s in this puppy pile somewhere !

As you can see he was being Vineyardized as soon as we got him home.

Soooooooooooo cute.

His first trip to MV at age 10 months.

All grown up.

Today In Sheep

The lambs have gotten HUGE!  Their tails have all fallen off, and they are more and more independent every day.  They are still nursing, but it’s becoming rather comical as they have gotten a bit big to be under their mamas!

Oona has been learning how to handle taking care of feeding; she has the advantage of being fast enough to outrun them to the troughs, but the disadvantage of still being small enough to get a bit trampled.  She gets smarter about how she manages it every day, though.

This is Darby, if you can believe it!  He looks enormous to me now!  Luckily he is still just as sweet as ever.

Everybody is doing well and growing like weeds!  So far even our very hottest days have not been too awful; hopefully that will remain the case and we won’t have to administer too much heat tonic this summer!

Star-Spangled Birthday …

I didn’t know this until yesterday but 2014 is the 200th birthday of our national anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner.

This is a picture of the flag that flew over Ft McHenry in Baltimore and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem which became our national anthem.

I took this picture of the flag in 1985 at the Smithsonian, photos of it are not allowed anymore.

In 1981, the Smithsonian began a two-year preservation effort: staff vacuumed the flag to reduce accumulated dust, installed new lighting and air-handling systems, and mounted a screen in front of the flag to protect it from light and damaging airborne matter.

But more needed to be done to preserve the flag and in 2008 the flag got its own state of the art gallery.. CLICK HERE to visit that site.

“…the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”  – Francis Scott Key -
