Snow and Slow Progress
Looking at these pictures it just seems that 8 inches really isn't that much snow...but it is HEAVY. And the beauty of it was looking out the front door first thing in the morning and seeing our neighbors doing the shoveling. Taking pity on the poor woman with the broken spouse.
We are also SO thankful that this storm did not cause any power loss in the area. We are already experiencing sewer line problems without losing power on top of it. The day before the storm began they had marked the road to replace the entire sewer main! I guess we will keep our flushing to two or three times a day till Tuesday, since Monday is a holiday. And keep our fingers crossed.
I cleared a path to the studio...
And finally got to work.
And I will be back at it again today. Thankfully the sun is out!

Sleeping on Sheep
During a photo shoot up north last year, Susie stayed at our terrific friend Julie’s house. When I was complaining to Julie about having difficulty sleeping and waking up congested, she recommended that I try a wool pillow as wool is hypoallergenic. In fact, she had made some and gave me one to take home with me! When Susie saw that I received a wool pillow, she was a bit jealous. While at Julie’s she’d slept on one of the pillows and really liked it. So when it came time to think of the perfect Christmas gift for her, a handmade wool pillow came to mind.
Because we didn’t have any fleeces available, I contacted Spinderella’s Fiber Mill to see if they had any wool that they could process for me. Fortunately they had some wool and alpaca batts ready to go and promptly shipped them out to me. I paid for 2lbs of batts which was enough to make one pillow; Lynn didn’t want to break up a batt and the batts were a little heavy, so she sent me overweight batts for free. It was very kind of her!
Then I want to Julie’s house so that she could show me how to make a pillow from the batts. She had made a tutorial for Spinderella’s that they posted on facebook, so I knew that I would be in good hands. The quality of cotton is very important in making sure that the stray fibers don’t escape from the pillow. I went with Kona Cotton, which has a tight weave.
This batt was both wool and alpaca and I just loved the different colors that were combined:
The finished pillow is soft and full and stuffed to the gills!
It will flatten and felt a bit over time. I flip my pillow regularly to help prevent it from getting too flat. I definitely enjoy sleeping on a wool pillow; it’s a small bit of luxury. Every once in awhile, I get a glimpse of the printed cotton that Julie choose for my pillow and it makes me smile every time and think of Julie and that she cares enough about me that she wanted to give me a piece of herself in a handmade package. I hope that I passed that love onto Susan with her own pillow!

Hey Hey, It’s A Snow Day! (Photo Heavy!)
So far at the farm we’ve got 8 inches, and we’re expecting another one or two before it’s all over. I took the break between snowfalls to take pictures of everyone outside.
There’s plenty of shelter, hay and fresh water for all of them, so we are all able to relax a bit and enjoy the snow.
It’s especially nice when we start our day with a recipe from the always wonderful Smitten Kitchen! This is baked eggs ranchero from her book. The eggs came from our chickens, who have started laying again now that the days are getting longer.
Charley trudged through the snow to get food and snuggles.
I love how Francis is photobombing in the back.
The dogs are taking it in stride. Sabine’s been rolling all around in it, Orzo and Gnocchi have been playing in it.
Cini has been ever vigilant against any interlopers, and hasn’t seemed to even notice it.
I hope you are all enjoying your snow day as much as we are!!!

Snow Day
For most of the east coast, at least, it’s a wintry, snowy day today, so … How do you like to spend your snow days? Feel free to gloss over the obligatory parts like shoveling unless you LIKE it. We’re talking ideal, best way to spend a snow day kind of thoughts, here.
For those of you who live in places where snow days simply don’t happen? Feel free to substitute “snow” with “rain” and think about the kind of days when you just want to cuddle up inside where it’s warm and dry.
Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!

The Islander Remembered …
February 2007, almost exactly 7 years ago was the last time I sailed on the Islander..
Even though not sleek or graceful, for 57 years the Islander brought her own special beauty to the waters surrounding the Vineyard. The Islander will continue to exist through paintings, photographs and in the memories of those who loved her. There was just “something” about her.
Early morning …
It was said she was going to be dismantled for scrap metal… I don’t think I want to know if that’s what happened to her or not… I’d rather remember her as a beautiful tub of a ferry :)
