Review: The Wishing Thread

First, the facts:

Title: The Wishing Thread

Author: Lisa Van Allen

Published by: Ballantine Books, 2013

Pages: 385

Type: Novel

The In-Depth Look:

As a nice change of pace, this isn’t a standard knitting book at all, though knitting runs through it as a constant stream.

This, instead, is a novel–a story of three sisters and their Tarrytown NY yarn shop when the matriarch of the family dies. Along with the story of the estranged sisters, there is a supernatural element woven here, because their family has a gift. For generations, if someone was truly desperate, they could have the family knit them something special, something that would make a difference, solve problems outside their control–but only if a gift was given that had meaning. And when it’s their own lives, their own shop on the line?

I don’t want to give anything away, so I’m keeping this short, but all in all, this is a lovely story about family and sacrifice and the things that make life worthwhile–all with a touch of magic.

6 Year Blogaversary …

On Saturday, October 5th MV Obsession will be 6 years old.  SIX.  Six years of obsessing about the place that I love most in the world, that’s a lot of obsessing.  Today’s post will be number 745 and it all began with these ten words…

Hi, my name is Joan and I’m a Vineyard-a-holic…

Followed by…

joan-mv-44.jpg My obsession/love affair with Martha’s Vineyard started early in my life.  I was around 2 and a half in this picture and this was already my second trip.

My connection to MV was through my mother who although was born in Maine was raised on MV.   She went to Oak Bluffs high school (there was no regional high school, each town had its own back then) and after graduating moved to NJ where she met my father and quickly converted him into an MV lover.

We stayed with my godparents in Oak Bluffs every summer.    Life on MV was so different from Newark, NJ where I spent the other part of my existence.   My mother and I would take the train from NY to Woods Hole in June,  my dad would arrive for the entire month of August and we’d all sadly leave the beginning of September.

My summers were filled with trips to the beach in Oak Bluffs… endless rides on the Flying Horses… ice cream at the Frosty Cottage on Circuit Ave… popcorn at Darling’s… fairs and parades… at least one trip to Gay Head (Aquinnah)… visiting relatives in Indian Hill… movies… setting pins at the bowling alley in Oak Bluffs… endless hours at the Oak Bluffs library… Bible school at the Tabernacle… Illumination Night… and one especially painful memory of my first and only dance lesson at the Tivoli ballroom where the Oak Bluffs police department now stands.

These are just a few snippets of memories and stories I’d like to share.  Hope whoever reads them finds them as enjoyable as I did experiencing them.’

MV Obsession isn’t strictly about the Vineyard anymore but like the header says it’s ‘almost all the time.’

Feel free to wander through the category links along the left side, visitors are always welcome :)

To be continued….

Last Week in Pictures

There are a couple of things making me really happy right now, but they aren’t anything I can write about, so I’m just posting a bunch of animal pics today instead.

Which is better (or preferred) … stories with multiple character points of view? Or stories that stick to just one or two at most? And, why?

Hitch KALs starting this month!

bodegabay1We have two KALs beginning today: my Exakta Hat & Anne Podlesak’s lovely Bodega Bay Stole.

Join in the fun in the Ravelry Hitch group!  The threads are sticky-ed at the top of the group discussions, so they’re easy to find.

The rules are pretty simple: cast on on or after today, bind off & post a pic in the FO thread on or before November 30th.

Fall Shearing with Emily

Emily came Saturday to to shear the colored flock for Fall. We were all so happy to see her! I mean, every time Emily comes it’s a party, but were all really anxious to see her in person and find out how she was doing post-injury.

For those of you who missed it, Emily was shearing a few months ago and a wild kick from a thrashing sheep drove her electric shearers in to the back of her left hand, severing the ligaments and tendons. Obviously this is a terrible injury for anyone, but for someone who makes her living with her hands, it was devastating.

I am happy to repost that Emily is nearly back to 100%. She has a badass scar on the back of her hand that she is very proud of and has almost full use again. She’s got another surgery next week to remove all the scar tissue that has built up inside her hand and then she should be all set.

Fall Shearing

[Amy and I took turns taking pictures while Emily sheared. You should definitely check Amy's blog for more pics in soon.]

The lambs were sheared for the first time. Patmore got a lot of love from Neve before and after.

Fall Shearing

Cini and Sabine were thrilled to see Emily, as always. She is part of their flock.

Emily had a chance to look at our calendars and pick a couple of potential dates for our public Spring Shearing. I have to make sure they don’t conflict with a couple other things but then I’ll be announcing the date ASAP so y’all can start planning.

October Calendar Picture …

October’s two pictures are of pumpkins at Morning Glory Farm in October 2012.  I love pumpkins, they make me smile… to me they’re ‘autumn’.
