Introducing Herriot Heathers

It may feel like summer outside but cooler days will be here before you know it. That means it’s time to introduce you to our new Fall/Winter yarns and design collections!

First up is Herriot Heathers, an extension of our very popular 100% Baby Alpaca Herriot yarn! Herriot was originally only available in 10 all natural colors; Herriot Heathers comes in 10 lovely, gently heathered shades. Otherwise, though, it’s all Herriot!

Herriot Heathers Color Card

This season we’re very excited to be releasing patterns in a different way. In the past we’ve released each collection as booklets jam-packed with with patterns. However, you have been clamoring to be able to buy individual pattern from the collection and this season, you can. We’re releasing all these patterns as printed leaflets, available at your LYS.

And you will want to buy these patterns! The collection was designed by one of my favorite people in the world, Alison Green. Seriously, if there is one person in the world who I wish I lived in my town, it’s Alison. She is fun, and funny and full of so much joie de vivre. Just knowing I’m going to see her puts a smile on my face. Plus, she’s a brilliant designer who is going places. If I sound like a total fangirl, it’s because I am!

Here’s a more formal bio:

Alison Green (formerly Alison Green Will) is a knit designer, knitting teacher and technical editor living in Haverhill, MA. Her designs have been published in Twist Collective, Interweave Knits, Knitty, and she has designed for yarn companies such as Classic Elite and SweetGeorgia Yarns. You can find her independently published patterns on Ravelry or her website, www.AlisonGreenWill.com.

The Haverhill collection celebrates the landmarks near and in designer Alison Green’s town. It features both cablework and colorwork to show off Herriot Heathers’ crisp stitch definition and smooth drape.

WIP: Findley Edition!!

Hi everyone! In my last post, I had just finished knitting the set up chart and was ready to tackle the main repeat section of the shawl. Since my one ball of Findley has plenty of yardage for my project, I planned on knitting until I felt like stopping.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m knitting lace, I  get excited to “just keep knitting, just keep knitting….” so I can watch it grow more and more. Hopefully you can tell from these pictures that Dory’s words of wisdom were running through my head quite a bit with this project.

one repeat

Pardon the poor quality of the pictures, my camera on my phone doesn’t do what I want it to.   Here I’ve tried to get a close up of the lace pattern…..can you see it?

one repeat close up

When I went to Boston to help with the Photo Shoot, I was in the middle of the second repeat. Here’s a picture (taken by my friend Brenda) of me on the back of Susie’s car when I finished knitting the second repeat.

three repeat

Three repeats down and I still have plenty of yarn left. I’ve decided to do one more repeat before I bind off the shawl.  Next time, I’ll show you the new-to-me bind off used in this project and we can see how beautiful my Kiwassa is after it gets a little bath!

Happy Sunday

Waffles

Do you celebrate Sundays? Honestly, Sundays used to really bum me out, because they meant the weekend is almost over. But then I wised up and realized that I was spending fully half of the weekend being blue that the weekend was almost over. Ridiculous, right?

Now I celebrate Sundays! Today I made amazing waffle. Lots and lots of waffles. Way too many waffles, in fact. They were amazing though. I use this recipe and I mix the batter up the night before so it has plenty of time to develop flavor. They are the best waffles I’ve ever had, let alone made myself.

Tomorrow we’ll be introducing you to the first of our Fall/Winter yarns and pattern collections. (I know it’s still Summer, but the yarn and patterns are arriving in stores/we’re about to burst with excitement!)

Until then, I hope you have amazing, restful Sunday.

Awesome Awe-gust …

August is THE month to be on Martha’s Vineyard… not just because it’s the last full month of summer but it is a month jammed packed with special events.

My favorite is Illumination Night which this year is Wed, Aug 14, 2013.   Last year I did a post about my memories of Illumination Night… CLICK HERE to read it   .101_3019… and CLICK HERE for information on this year’s Illumination Night.

The 152nd MV Agricultural Fair is Aug 15 – 18, 2013… CLICK HERE for information.

101_5093

On Friday, Aug 18 you truly won’t want to miss the Oak Bluffs fireworks at Ocean Park…  CLICK HERE for information and to view fireworks finale from a few years ago.

101_3574

These are just three of MY favorite things to do on MV in August…  CLICK HERE to check out the MVOL.com calendar of events to see all the other fun and interesting things going on.

As a summer kid on the Vineyard August was always a special month for me.  Although my mom and I would arrive for the summer in June it wasn’t until August that my dad joined us until Labor Day when we’d all come home to New Jersey.

In the 40′s and 50′s August was filled with days at the beach, nightly rides on the Flying Horses, ice cream at the Frosty Cottage on Circuit Ave, popcorn bars at Darling’s also on Circuit Ave, trips to my mother’s cousins home in Indian Hill, band concerts in Ocean Park and community sings every Wed at the Tabernacle.

In the 90′s and 2000′s it was about introducing my grandchildren to August on the Vineyard.  Days at the beach, rides on the Flying Horses, ice cream at any number of places in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, bicycle rides,  miniature golf, and being together.

The I’m-Having-a-Bad-Week Sale

You know those weeks when everything that can possibly go wrong goes wrong? So wrong that you can’t even begin to imagine that things will ever start going right again?

Yeah. That’s the week I’m having.

First, I’m dealing with a banking fiasco of epic proportions. EPIC. It will all be resolved eventually but it’s been a huge pain in the back porch for more than a week now.

But more importantly, my camera was stolen last week. My camera is one of my most precious possessions but it’s also a really important tool of my work. I take lots of pictures of the animals. I do all our photo shoots for our patterns. I actually have a garment that I need to shoot right now for our fall collection.

Which is why I had to go out and buy a new camera and lens yesterday. A very, very expensive new camera and lens. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I very nearly threw up when I wrote the check at the camera shop.

So that’s the bad news. The GOOD news is that all of this means that we’re having a one day sale on absolutely everything today only. From Midnight EST to 11:59 p.m. on August 2, EVERYTHING is on sale 20% off. Yup. Everything. Every. single. thing.

You don’t need a coupon code– we’ve marked everything down already.

So if you’ve been waiting to buy a share or a spot in The Shepherd & The Shearer, TODAY IS YOUR LUCKY DAY!

(Other discounts and coupon codes cannot be applied during this one day sale, but those never apply to shares anyway, so this is a much better deal.)

And with this post, I am turning this very bad week around right now.

Illustration Friday, Jungle Theme

This week's Illustration Friday theme was "jungle" and I was back at the drawing board early in the week and then again mid-week.  I was back and forth on what to do, but then I saw this poster by A.M. Cassandre, the French illustrator, painter, and commercial artist.

I really like the airbrush texture in his work, and wanted to see if I could somehow capture a bit of the grittiness in my own digital work.  Some of what bugged me about the spring horse illustrations of last week was that I couldn't capture the right texture.

Another thing I wanted to address was the lack of variety in the spring horse illustration.  It felt a bit blocked.  Maybe it was too much time on the digital work from the get-go, and not enough sketching.  This time, I had a goal of illustrating 20 different elements in one illustration.  I got close... I illustrated 16 different elements.  Baby steps!  For subject matter, I picked my fave jungle creatures and rolled with it.  This sounds corny, but I tried not to try so hard.

Okay, that's all for now!

Here's my sketch in case you wanted to see how this started.

Grandmothers and the food they make

Grandmothers from around the world pose with their signature dishes. What beautiful women and what intriguing food. I have a hard time thinking about Caterpillar in Tomato Sauce, but the final dish doesn't look too bad—and who could resist that beautiful Malawian grandmother's smile?

WildFibers Wrap Up

I still feel like I’m recovering from being back, but I really wanted to get these photos up of the event we had at WildFibers in Mount Vernon, Washington.

WildFibers46

Like the others, it’s an amazing store. I loved seeing three yarn shops so close together; they are all special in their own way and seem to serve their community well!

WildFibers32

One of the things I love about WildFibers is that they take the time to knit up a lot of shop samples.

WildFibers14

Above Findley in a special scarf pattern created just for WildFibers.

WildFibers28

This is Willa Afghan that was made for the shop by our distributor, KFI in a decidedly different colorway than the original!

WildFibers03

On the left is Mathilde hat in Moonshine and on the right is Entangled Vines Cardi also in Moonshine.

WildFibers39 WildFibers40

This cowl is called Shoulder Cozy and is made with Marlowe and Kidsilk Haze held together.

And of course, who doesn’t love yarn, lots and lots of yarn?

WildFibers38 WildFibers06

They even have some Chadwick (above) and Willa (below) left! They’re both discontinued, so you have to get them when you can. I almost grabbed some Willa for myself since I don’t have any!

WildFibers07WildFibers01 WildFibers08 WildFibers09

After having a chance to look around, it was time to show our goods to the knitters that came out! And what a great bunch they were!

WildFibers11

Because the space was intimate and it was difficult for the folks to see all the way in the back (there were some folks on the couch by the time I started modeling), I walked around the room to show off the garments. As I said before, every show is different!

WildFibers12

A new pattern we’ll be releasing this fall! WildFibers16

Another new pattern. I know, you’re drooling! I don’t blame you one bit!

Towards the end I started getting just a little silly:

Anthe in Moonshine

WildFibers17

We’ll be talking about the above garment on the blog VERY SOON.

WildFibers20

New garments everywhere! (above and below)

WildFibers21

Then it was time to let everyone get their hands on the garments and try them on. The best part of this is that so many knitters realize that what they think won’t fit them (because everything is an extra small) actually fits great!

WildFibers22 WildFibers18

WildFibers10 WildFibers31 WildFibers23 WildFibers24 WildFibers25 WildFibers26 WildFibers27 WildFibers29 WildFibers30

I can’t help but loving to take the shots of messy garments all over a table. I love that they’re picked up and checked out!

WildFibers33

Everyone really had a great time! There were lots of questions and comments and everyone so delightfully friendly!

WildFibers34 WildFibers35

Last year when Susie was here, it was extremely hot. Apparently she (and probably everyone else) was sweating copiously because that kind of heat is very rare for Washington and so few people have air conditioners (much like New England)! Stardustsoul wanted to give Susie a hug, and Susie warned her that she smelled like a monkey. (For the record, Stardustsoul says Susie doesn’t smell like a monkey.) To make a long story slightly shorter, Stardustsoul made it out to see us and she brought Susie the most amazing present:

WildFibers45

Susie and I talked with knitters for a long time. It was great!

WildFibers36

Susie might have come with (and by come home with I mean immediately transfer everything she owned to) this Namaste bag:

WildFibers37

We also might have expanded JMF’s button collection:

WildFibers41

At these prices how can you afford not to?

WildFibers42

And look at how friendly their bell is?

WildFibers43

Look who I found hanging out near the coffee and tea? Love it!

WildFibers44

By the end of the night, we were exhausted. But the staff at WildFibers was fantastic! Really, the whole shop was filled with lovely, amazing people and we couldn’t have asked for a better time!

I have one more Seattle Adventure to show you! I can hardly wait!
