Weather delay

The weather this week was just horridly hot -- heat index of 105 for two days in a row, and not much better on the days before and after that -- so my running came to a halt.  I'm trying to be less of a baby about running in heat than I have been in years past, but I think we can all agree that that is TOO hot.

So there were six days between my last two runs.  I was afraid that that would be a problem, but I did okay today.  My last time out I did my first nine-minute segment; today was 9 minute run/3 minute walk/9 minute run.  The next time out is 20 minutes straight, and I'm kind of terrified.  I don' t know why there isn't an intermediate run 10/walk 1/run 10 or something.  But I'll do my best.  The next couple of days are supposed to be quite cool and I'm hoping to take advantage of the weather to get through the 20 minute run.  After that there's a few more runs with shorter segments (15 minutes, 18 minutes) but it's not long at all before each run is just longer than the previous one, with no walking breaks.

I've been contemplating signing up for this 5k.  It's just for women, which is appealing: men are intimidating!  But it's on July 7, which is in just a couple of weeks; the signup deadline is coming up in a week or so.  When I first started this c25k plan I had, theoretically, enough time to get through the whole program before the race, but as my progress has slowed over the last couple of weeks thanks to weather and life getting in the way, now it's quite likely I won't be done with it yet.  And further, the c25k name is kind of a misnomer; the last workout has you running 30 minutes straight, and while that's nothing to sniff at, believe me, I'm not running a 10 minute mile!

I suppose maybe I should just sign up anyway, and see how far I get...if I have to walk, I have to walk.  Right?

Searing

With a title like "searing" you might think I'm talking about the ridiculously hot weather we had this week, but no.  Rather, I'm talking about the eyeball-searing yarn I bought the other day.

DSC_4849

Seriously.  Eyeball-searing.  Especially that pink!  It's marginally less painful to look at in person, but only just barely so.  That's a bunch of skeins of Red Heart Super Saver from Walmart...yarn I'd normally never buy from a store I never shop at.  But, as the picture would suggest, it's for yarnbombing -- and if yarnbombing isn't a good use for obnoxiously-colored Red Heart, I don't know what is.

This summer, a coworker and I have organized a yarnbombing group and we're going to cover our library in yarn.  All the participants are REALLY enthusiastic, and if they follow through on even half of their ideas, it's going to be AWESOME.  I can't wait to see what everyone does!

I knitted my first little tag the other night: it was meant to go on one of our barcode scanners (which is why it doesn't fit particularly well) but we decided that this little vase would, for now, be more visible.  But, in due time, the barcode scanners will get cozied up, too.  Oh yes.  Yes, they will.

TNNA Sneak Peek

Caroline and I are in lovely Columbis for the TNNA trade show this weekend and  I couldn’t resist showing you a little preview of our Fall/Winter collection. I’ll post detailed pics as soon as I can, but I figure there is no harm in posting theses as long as I don’t reveal any details.

I can tell you that this collection is the work I’m most proud of since we started collaboration with KFI on our commercials lines. You will love the yarns! And the designs are simply amazing. More details to come.

Summer Toes

If the thermometer didn't scream the arrival of summer today, the toes in the Little Red Barn did.  Usually when we get together, I like to take pictures of all the pals who drop by to spin and knit and create together, but it feels like they're all starting to blur together.  So I made it my task to find something unusual about our assembly today, and it hit me like a ton of bricks.

Toes.

Almost to a person, the pedicures were out and proud today.  Except for Greta, who had her very cute red Keens on, and me, who is constantly in nerdy white socks and rubber pasture shoes.  I'm jonesing for a pedicure, so this was probably creeping forward from the recesses of my mind.  Check out the cool colors:

Ms. Mairead and her blue metallics

Rita's wedding pedi is holding up remarkably well

Chiyo in green

Desiree in green sparkles

Lisa in sparkly orange

Denise goes with a classic French pedi

Virginia in floral blue...
...and our first time visitor, Sheila, who had gorgeous bottle green toes, too, but she got away without getting her toes photographed.  She's obviously heard about me and the ubiquitous camera.

I think I feel a farmer birthday pedi in my future very soon...

The Longest Day

The solstice this year also happened to be the hottest day we’ve had yet, nearly 100 degrees, so we celebrated the way you normally celebrate a super hot summer day.

By lazing about.

We tried to stay inside during the hottest portion of the day – it wasn’t just hot, it was thick.  You felt like a hot, wet blanket was hitting you square in the chest as soon as you walked out the door.  We ventured out early to feed and water the chickens (and then every hour or two we had to go out and made sure everyone still had water – especially the 50 meat chicks we have in the brooder).

I stumbled around the garden a little bit, pulling a few things here and there for our dinner in celebration of summer’s official start.  Neve kept stealing out to where the wild blackberry bush has started to fruit, sneaking ripe berries by the handful.

It was also high time to make a blueberry gateau – Paul’s favorite dessert ever.

Once the sun had begun to set the kids began begging for a fire to sit around and play Mad Libs, and maybe roast marshmallows.

I did one slightly better – I made homemade graham crackers from the July 2012 issue of Martha Stewart Living.  The recipe is HERE.

Then after dinner I brought them out to the fire along with some marshmallows and chocolate squares for the first s’mores of the summer.

(I didn’t have square cookie cutters, so I made them round. )

They were gooey, crumbly and messy, but they were good.

We sat out by the fire watching the bats and the fireflies and playing Mad Libs and laughing until after ten when the fire started to die out.  We all went to bed with our books, smelling deliciously of summer and woodsmoke.

Happy summer, everyone.  Let’s enjoy it to the fullest.

Through A Church Window …

I took these pictures of the Federated Church in Edgartown in May one evening around 6pm.  The light through the windows was at a perfect angle to illuminate the inside of the church with a warm golden glow.

“This 1828 meetinghouse, on the corner of South Summer and Cooke streets, is the oldest church building in its original location still used for worship on the Vineyard and has had few changes made. It features box pews; graceful woodwork; a Hook and Hastings organ, which was installed in 1895 in a case built in 1840 by Ebenezer Goodrich, and restored in 1985; a handsome chandelier which originally burned whale oil; and an 1853 Ingraham clock. The sanctuary, which is acoustically ideal, seats nearly 400 persons within 40 feet of the pulpit. The building is inspirational, a tribute to its designer.”

Saturday puppy post

While Caroline and Susan are out at TNNA I decided this would be a good time to get some quality time with the puppies before they get much bigger. I let them out meet some other friends at the farm. They surely brightened my day and hope these pictures brighten yours.

Gnocchi was first out and strutting his stuff.

The chickens made some puppies nervous.

Then the goat crew showed up.

The puppies and goats  ignored each other for the most part.

Leo was the only one who was interested and rather sweet to the puppies.

After awhile in the sun and the puppies were ready to go back for a rest and so was I.

Enough soap to bathe an army!

024

It’s been a very soapy week around here. I’m finally all stocked up on my favorite soaps and more. There are three batches of lavender, a batch of coriander, a batch of meyer lemon, a batch of violet, a batch of mint, and a batch of black cherry with charcoal and pumice.
