A Call to Arms: Setting Up the Shop

The shop on the same day we got the keys...
Since I didn't want to complain about EVERYTHING, I haven't posted.  I could have posted about the 10 hours a day I spend in the shop with my curious 2 year-old (who insisted on giving me hugs and kisses while I was lifting heavy items).  I could have even posted about how tight the money is since we are spending our own money left and right to get things moved in and fixed up.  But why stay positive?  Because that's what gets me through the day!  In spite of all the bumps in the road, I know that this yarn shop is something I want to do and it will work out the way it should.

How one area of the shop looked as of yesterday.

We funded this business out of our own pockets.  That's admittedly the scariest thing about starting the yarn shop.  There's so much on the line.  If it fails, it will take a long time to recover.  I'm starting to feel the same strain that I did when I worked at my last job, I made good money, had great health care benefits, but hated the job.  I was torn because working their benefited my family, but I was losing my sanity.  Now, I'm doing what I love, but this has the potential to not be a good thing for the family.  Then I just pick up and start knitting an item for my Etsy shop or stare at pictures of the LYS and feel a sense of calm.  See?  Yarn is good for your health.

When we got the keys almost two weeks ago and I began moving in, the space looked empty.  Then, a week later, the furniture was moved in and I could barely move around without hitting a box or getting a bruise from the corner of a fixture.  My husband, his brother, and a friend moved all the large items in and I ended up moving everything where it needed to go.  That meant I had to tramp up and down the basement stairs with heavy boxes and bins of things from our storage unit and the basement of our home.

The other half of the front area.
Today, all of the yarn was finally put out...

So now I'm stressing about all the other little incidentals that need to fall into place before we open the doors.  You know, the final touches to make this business launch.  The sign is the most difficult item to do, because I cannot do it myself (grrrr...).  You'll find out quickly that, while I am a team player, I love my independence.

Peanut finds all the running around amusing.  He's got a stash of toys and plenty of things to get into while I have my attention on something else.  He's even noticed that UPS delivers "mommy's yarn" so now whenever he sees a UPS truck, he proudly exclaims, "That's mommy's yarn!  Mommy, we get yarn!  Mommy, we go yarn shop, get yarn!"  I see another yarnie joining us in the future...

Why is this a call to arms?  Well, it being a bit of a slower time for yarn shops in general with warmer months coming, internet sales have slowed to somewhat of a stand still, so we need your help.  I implore my followers to continue to patronize the online shop, tell your friends and family about us, and if you're in the area, come in for our Grand Opening so that we can keep up with the demand.  :)

What you'll see shortly after Midwest Yarn opens are classes, craft demos, knit alongs, open knit sessions, and some great promotions that will keep you coming back for more.  If you're a crafter or an artist interested in selling your items at our shop, contact me at melina@midwestyarn.com for more information.

Garden update

003 004 007 010 021

Things are doing really well in the garden. I did lose those tomatoes to frost but more are coming along in pots inside and everything else is doing very well indeed. I came home with some goodies from Gilead that I wanted to get right into the ground since we are expecting rain over the next few days which will help them start off on the right foot. I brought back bee balm, white wood violets and some very special bloodroot. Thanks Kristen!

Gilead Fiber Farm Shearing!

The recap of the Spain trip is being interrupted to tell you about the fabulous weekend I had with some friends in Bethel, VT. We were hanging with our pal Kristen at her farm. There were newish babies and a very new baby (born the evening we arrived)! Lots of snoggling with said babies and the bigger sheep and goats too. Lots of talking and laughing and playing with fiber. Doesn’t get any better, right?

But now I want a drum carder.

I ended up with a lot of “before” sheep and goat pics, but very few after. This is Anna (the ewe) with Atlas (her lamb), before and after.

ETA: Anna and Atlas on the left… Sophie and Stella, the lamb born the evening we arrived, on the right! Skippyjon is dad to both.

Yep, she ended up on her butt… but a few minutes later his feet were trimmed!

Sorry for the word-light post, but there’s no other way I’ll be getting these things posted if I don’t just do it whatever way I can.

We had a fabulous time!

And I still want a drum carder.

Cook Out …

A Mighty Big Giveaway- The Winners

I know all of you are going bananas waiting for me to post the winner of the Flock Giveaway, so I’m going to get right to it.

When we started this giveaway, we said from the very beginning that we would be giving away TWO flocks. That’s part of the reason I was so puzzled by all the negativity between the two front-runners’ camps. When all the drama started during the voting, I began to feel incredibly protective of all four candidates because I knew that all four were lovely and deserving people. That’s why I was so pissed about the negativity. Not because I thought that we didn’t deserve it; I thought that they didn’t deserve it.

For all four finalist, this was a giant step towards a life-long dream. They put their hearts into making those videos and then they stepped out of their respective comfort zones and put their dreams on the internet for people to pass judgement on. Can you imagine the anxiety that caused? How it must have felt to watch people voting on their worthiness?

I’m not very happy with myself for not handling this differently. In my defense, in years past, people have only said kind things and the entire feel of the contest was positive and uplifting. But this year, it felt like I was making people dance for my amusement and that doesn’t sit well with me. It’s not what I ever intended and it’s not who I want to be. I hope that all four of our finalists will accept my deep and sincere apology for this ordeal. It wasn’t supposed to be like this and I wish I had shut it down when things started going south.

I am so proud of the way that all of our finalists worked to get votes and refused to engage in the nastiness. I know that a couple of you had to ask your friends to stop “helping” quite so hard, which couldn’t have been comfortable.

Which leads us to what brought you here. The winner is…Anne Smith. And Sebette Hamill. And Audrey Morris. And The Labens. Yup, we’re giving a starter flock to all four of our finalist.

Congratulations, y’all. You’ve earned it. Contact me and we will sort out the details.

To those of you who’ve only found us through the Flock Giveaway, I hope you will stick around. It’s been so nice having new voices join the conversation along with our loyal readers. Everyone is welcome here.

Bazaar Recap

The bazaar this weekend was a lot of fun. I love a good excuse to hang out in a room full of people working on fibery pursuits. There was a lot of knitting (I was mostly working on a sock, because I am sooo exciting that way), spinning, weaving, and needle felting. I needle felted for the first time! I was very proud of my flat square of wool. I will have to get some more direction on how to make something other than a rectangle from Anna the next time she offers classes.

I have been making subtle changes to my set up every week.

This time I hung my hand dyed tops on my drying rack, which gave me room to spread the worsted weight yarn out a bit.

The best seller of the weekend was definitely the sock yarn.

My sock yarn shelf is starting to look just a little bit sad. It doesn’t help that I am out of vinegar and have consistently forgotten to purchase any when out for the past week–and therefore I can’t dye. As soon as a gallon of vinegar makes it home with me there will be more sock yarn.

I made a really great score from the BlushingEwe booth.

Tarnish on the left, Fireflower on the right. I had in mind to find something at the bazaar that I could weave a fun scarf for myself out of, and these two lovely ladies just fit the bill. I love how elegant and understated tarnish is, and how loud and saturated fireflower is. They are about the same percentages of wool, silk, and firestar, and I can’t help but feel I am going to have a very luxurious woven scarf when I finish.

Here they are pulled into roving and ready to spin. I like to pull it out so I still get all of the layers ate one time for the color and texture variation, but so that it is still in an orderly strip. I find spinning directly from batt form a little difficult.

I seem to be on a bit of a neck warmer kick. First the Ebbtide, then all the luxurious woven scarf planning, and of course, the Daybreak I started a few days ago.

I am a little less than half way through the striped section for the largest size. It’s very easy and fun to knit–and I love how retro looking my colors are turning out.
